Surprised you didn't respond to this. I know you've seen the movie and this is a main quote.

Dune is one of my favorite works of fiction. For me it is right there with Tolkien

The Front Porch / Re: What are we watching these days?
November 15, 2021, 02:01:19 PM

I watched a highly touted movie on Netflix, 'The Harder They Fall', a new western. This movie got 5 stars from our local paper and the juices were flowing for me to watch it.

I am going to have a hard time with this review, so bear with me.

First, I am a sucker for westerns. I LOVE them. Over the past decade or more, westerns have really become truer to reality, than the old shoot 'em ups, where the good guys never lost their hats no matter what happened to them. Movies like 'The Outlaw Josie Wales, The Unforgiven, and several others have tried to make people really feel what the old west was like, not the TV and older Hollywood types that we grew up with.

So now I sat down to watch this movie. I really don't know how to say this, but I felt this entire movie was racist, towards Whites. I understand most of the movie was done sort of 'tongue in cheek', and maybe it's just my age showing, but I couldn't even finish this movie. Even forgetting how I felt about the characters, when they start having a real shoot 'em up and all the regular guys are killing all the other guys with nary a flesh wound on themselves and they NEVER miss when they shoot, maybe I was missing the entire point, but it just wasn't for me. I can watch an old western movie and live with the way Hollywood did it back then, but for a new movie to make this happen, it was just too over the top for me.

Then we get to, what I felt was so many racist comments. Oh, just so you all know, all the main characters are Black and I just cannot imagine the West is the way it was portrayed here. Every town was Black, and when they did go to a 'White' town, the entire town was White, buildings, streets, sand, and people, and they were all portrayed as either idiots or racists.

I'm sorry, I sit down to watch a movie and when things like these happen, it really rubs me the wrong way. Again, I fully understand most was done 'tongue in cheek' but it just wasn't funny to me, wasn't even amusing to me.

If anyone else has seen this movie or will watch it, please explain to me what I am missing. I don't know who posts here as to race. I know Tim is of African American heritage and if you Tim, see this movie, I would love to have a discussion with you about it, with any other people who might be Black and see how they view this movie.

Let's just say I hated it and be done with it.

Great movie, but I would never know a specific quote from it.

Made Micheal Caine a star.

I'm surprised, Lenny!  I thought you'd get it for sure.

Anyone else want to give it a shot?

Why would you think that?

If it wasn't a well know line, I really have no idea what war movie it might come from?

I probably have seen it, just not a recognizable line.

I'm still trying to wrap my arms around the idea that "Tombstone" is completely left off this list and none of my friends on this site seem to like it either  :-??

How is that possible?

Let me chime in. I have seen Tombstone a couple of times and yes it is a good movie. To ME, it isn't a classic and a bit too long, but again, a good movie. Why it gets no love, maybe it is because the story, for the most part, has been done several other times, in the movies. A movie like 'My Darling Clementine', while maybe much further from the real story, was just a much better movie. IMVHO. I would much rather watch Henry Fonda than Val Kilmer anyday, again Just MVHO.
If Tombstone were on and I was thumbing thru the channels and saw it, I MIGHT stop and watch and might not. If My Darling Clementine were on and I stumbled upon it, I would stay and watch.
Sorry, no offense meant.

Absolutely LOVE your "Dreary Day" shot, the General Store and looking out from the bridge.
Enjoy your trip, Lenn. Keep snapping!  ;)

Lou

I'm always looking for that sunny, blue sky shot, but when the sun don't shine and the sky is grey, the colors are much more subdued and sometimes it has a special quality all its own.

The Front Porch / 20 best westerns of all time

Not a bad list if I do say so myself.

Sure all movies are subjective, and whoever is making these lists usually puts a few of their favorites in the mix. But again, I really cannot quarrel with any of the movies, or their particular ranking.

I am sorry but I still haven't gotten to edit my pix from our last trip a week or so again. We are off to Cape Cod on Sunday for another week, so I have some real work to do when I get home.
But, not to fear, I have pixs from last year that I never put up (or, at least I think I didn't).

Fall in New England, in all its glory.

As you saw last time, I simply LOVE leaves. On the ground, falling from trees and still on the trees. The colors are so intense that I can just move around, find different angles and just keep snapping away.

Hope you enjoy these shots

I happen to like this shot a lot. It was on a dreary day, with the mist and fog never leaving, but I felt it made an interesting shot

One of our favorite stops whenever we go to New Hampshire, is this General Store right over the Jackson Covered Bridge.

And, those that have been following this thread, know there hasn't been a covered bridge made that I didn't love to photograph. I always look for new ways to capture these amazing things, outside, inside, underneath, close up, from a distance, etc. One trick I learned way back when it to try a frame the entrance and capture a shot looking out from the bridge.
Here is another one of my favs that capture exactly what I was looking for. Just another rainy day but it gives the pix some charm

Old but still relevent

A New York attorney representing a very wealthy art collector called
and asked to speak to his client.
"Mr. Cohen I have some good news and I have some bad news."
The art collector replied, "You know, I've had an awful day, Jack, so
let's hear the good news first."
The lawyer said, "Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed
me that she has invested only $5,000 in two very nice pictures that
she thinks will bring somewhere between $15 and $20 million ... and I think she could be right."
The collector replied enthusiastically, "Holy cow!  Well done!  My wife is a brilliant business woman, isn't she? You've just made my day. Now, I know I can handle the bad news.  What is it?
The lawyer replied, "The pictures are of you and your secretary.
