We have traveled extensively so visiting some of these places was really cool. Personally, I am really not big on these 'caves' like Luray Caverns, Howe Caverns etc. To me, see one see them all, even though each have their own uniqueness. The lava Tubes were nice. We turned around on our own and had to wait for several official tours to go in and out before we ventured in. Really it sounds nicer than it was, but it was a different experience.
The Subway stations in Russia, particularly the ones we visited in St Peterburg were just awesome. They are deep underground and I mean deep maybe 1/4 mile. Most were prepared as underground bunkers in case of a nuclear war, but are exquisitely decorated, artwork on the walls, wonderful lighting and signs all over the place (be it in Russian) no photography.

A few of my pixs. It was hard to really get good pix as I was using a 'real' camera and trying not to get arrested. (We were on a tour)

I easily get lost in philosophical questions like this because I am open to entertain different options and viewpoints. I find it hard to disagree with legitimate points of view.

In regards to free will, I am torn between logic and religion and it's just a crazy convoluted rabbit hole in my head and I struggle to clearly convey the maze of thoughts in my head. Suffice it to say, yes, I believe we all have free will, all the while accepting that our lives are preordained.

@Len: I believe you CAN control your desires to eat. It comes down to the right incentive/motivator and/or priority. For example, if I said I'd give you $100K to share half of that cheesecake, you probably would. Likewise, if I offered you the same $100K and said DON'T eat any of it, I'm sure you would take the money.

When you put it like that. probably, but all things being equal, even though I know it is wrong for me, at that time, my will to resist it can't compare with my will to have some.

I struggle all the time.

My darling wife makes, what I consider, the best cheesecake EVER. Better than Juniors. She used to make this all the time, but now I only get one on my birthday. I am not severely overweight, but I am also not in the 'eat whatever you want' department. So she makes me this cheesecake, and my urges and desires, that I have no control over, make me want to eat it all and NOT share it with anyone.
Is this wrong, am I a creature of some law of the fittest or whatever. I always succumb to my desires and simply cannot resist.

How does that fit into your equation???

She is now into making home made breads and those wonderful smell filters thru every part of the house. I simply cannot control all these desires to eat, eat, and eat. I need help.

I really need to go thru some more of my pixs to find some that I haven't put up here. As I have said, there are certain things that I kind of 'dwell' on--covered bridges, flowers, sunsets, rocks and shells, leaves, etc., etc.

Here is another 'collection' from some of my butterfly pixs. Over the course of our travels, I have had the great fortune to find these fields of wildflowers where everywhere you turn there are butterflies. I try not to use my telephoto lens (I really should) but I chase these darn things all over until I can get close enough to capture some on flowers. Sometimes it does take lots of patience and effort, but the reward is well worth it.
If you ever get a chance to visit one of those butterfly exhibits, do it, there are literally thousands of butterflies flying all over the place and it is easier to capture them in a pix.

Think of a 40s movie about a murder in NYC.  One of my favorites.

I've got one... it's from 2005, so maybe some of you have seen it....  the jokes are numerous and IMO none of them fall flat.....

"The Engagement Ring" starring Patricia Heaton (of Everybody Loves Raymond fame).   https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0461660/fullcredits

I liked it particularly because I "know" every one of the people in this cast from my own life.  I grew up with them, and most were members of my family.

In this case, the characters are Italian, but I suspect you don't have to be "too Italian" to have or have known people like this in your own family.

It's available for free if you're an Amazon Prime customer/subscriber, but it's probably generally available elsewhere since it's over 15 years old.

Is this a movie or a series?

Actually, it's the exact same for me Lenny - not a huge Trekkie fan either, but liked the new movies (the ones with Chris Pine) and a friend of mine told me about Discovery on Netflix.

I watched the first 2 season in like 2 weeks, like a maniac and they were pretty cool... Season 3 I went along with the releases until today.  ;)

Have you seen Star Trek: Picard? Wonder if it's worth watching.

I have not seen it. I have heard really mixed reviews of it. Like if you LOVED Picard from Next Generation you will probably love this movie, and then visa versa. Again, just from hearsay, I have heard it is a bit slow and Picard, love him or hate him will determine how you feel about the movie.

Myself, I liked his character, but if the movie is slow, no liking a character will make it better. I'll see it sometime down the line.

The Front Porch / Re: Good (or bad) Movies PART 2

It really has been a long time since anyone posted on this thread, as, I guess, newer movies (that was the original purpose, to review new movies) have been lost since there really haven't been many new movies.

As I mentioned in the 'What we are watching' thread, I had just finished watching The Crown on Netflix and just loved it. Gillian Anderson did such a remarkable job playing Margaret Thatcher, I really wanted to see other movies about her, so we found, an Oscar-winning role by Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher, 'The Iron Lady'
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1007029/
I know this movie is about 10 years old, but we had never seen it and what better time than now.
So myself and my darling wife watched this last night.

I can't say I really liked it a lot. It was good, and, as always, Ms. Streep just assumes the part and probably did deserve the Oscar for the role.
Briefly, it is about Ms. Thatcher after she was out of office, her husband had just died and she spends more time talking to an imaginary husband than anything else. That aside, her story was told thru flashbacks almost from childhood thru her time as PM of England. Maybe I expected more, but I was sort of disappointed as I felt more time was spent with her 'older' persona than with the story of her remarkable life and rise to become the first woman PM in England.

Again, just a remarkable performance by Ms. Streep, but overall, I was slightly disappointed in the movie as a whole.

Finished watching Star Trek Discovery Season 3 today.

The last couple of episodes are really good.

I have just started watching this and I am about 3/4 of the way thru season 1. As of now, I like it very much.

I am NOT a huge Trekkie and really only watched the original Star Trek and then about half of Star Trek  The Next Generation. After that, except for the movies, I have not followed all the future series that came out.
I attend (now with Zoom) a group from a library that we discuss things we are watching on TV and try to find a show that we all might like, watch and discuss (like a book discussion group). So Discovery was mentioned as several have also followed along and just finished season 3. Most of us are still in its infancy but since I do like it, I'll continue with it.

We LOVE Shark Tank, so this could be something we would like? How far in has season 1 gone?

I mentioned this before, but my darling wife got me into this reality series, Married at First Sight, where couples are paired to marry but they know nothing about their future mates until they see them at the altar. It has been on for about 11 seasons (the 12th just started on Lifetime) and I really love it. Again, it is reality and may not be for everyone, but we love it, we discuss so many things as these couples get married (legit), go on a honeymoon and set up house for 2 months. Then they have to decide if they want to stay married or get a divorce. Again, we find it very cute to see how strangers adjust to a new spouse and adjust to being married to a perfect stranger. (They do try and pair the couples up as to likes dislikes and many other factors, so they should get along) Not always the case though.

Lenn, I saw some of those B&W movies like Maltese Falcon but I got out of the habit for some reason. I will have to record some of those TCM movies
I happen to mention that particular movie as I consider it my favorite all-time movie. I am a HUGE Bogart fan and anything he was ever in, I have watched. Obviously some better than others, but I am a sucker for this 'film noir' and the mystery/crime dramas. Put Bogart in them with some excellent supporting cast members, and I can catch that movie every week.

Again, thanks for the heads up on the Triangle flix. I think I'll pass on that one though.

Interesting places.

Many I haven't been to and probably will never get to, but I have been to some like Subway in St Petersburg, Russia, and the one in Stockholm. along with several of the ones in the USA and the ' lava tube' in Hawaii.

This Triangle, what's the difference between this and any other 'slasher' type movie? You know, the poor good looking kids get killed off one by one and each in a different way. Gosh, if I were a serial killer and after a group of kids, why would I need to kill each one in a different way?
Anyway, not my type of movie.

I watch TCM for 'free' movies. Even the bad ones are good. I am into a lot of 'film noir' these days, you know those old Black and white crime movies from the late '40s and early '50s, some with great stars and others with people you never heard of. . I watched one this AM, don't even remember the name, but it was probably some 'B' movie
when it came out, but, you know what, it was decent enough to hold my interest, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
You want good movies, like in this genre, try Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Maltese Falcon. White Heat, and any good movie with Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. They both made their careers on these types of movies.
