Uh - oh.  Looks like the MLB matters afterall....even in the Giants Defense.

This is tragic news.  We will all sorely miss him.  My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

I hate the word mistake.

I meant to be a good dog owner but by mistake I mutilated them.  Darn it!

I hate it when someone commits an immoral act and they use the mistake work to get a second chance or forgiveness.  It's like when a guy cheats on his wife and his wife wants to leave him.  The guy will plead for a second chance and say "I made a mistake".

That seems to be the new thing to say these days.  The phrase "I take full responsibility" is often followed by one or more of these phrases:

"I'm sorry for my mistake"

"I'm sorry for the grief it caused"

"I'm sorry it happened"

These are commonly used and well calculated indirect phrases to position the culprit one step removed from real accountability.  It's publicists telling players "Ok the commish wants you to take full responsibility so take full responsibility but for Pete's sake dont come out and say you did it."

So what should we believe about Vick?  I agree he's only giving up as much as he has to.

BBH Archive / Re: To All Members

Came from BBWC as well.  I still like and appreciate many of the members there and still frequent their board.  Between the two, a lot of good stories and information is presented.  I try to fill the gaps if one forum, for example, does not have the same link to a good story as the other.   I hope that is acceptable as I dont view these two sites as competitive in any way.  Please do let me know if that is out of line.

I'm glad someone wrote this article.  I've stated the same thing many times in previous offseasons.  Reaction time is much more important than foot speed.

I'll use my boxing analogy.  It was Jack Dempsey, I believe, who once said that he could beat most opponents to the punch even though there were many people who had faster handspeed.  Most others did not possess the abiliy to react to openings as quickly.

You could run a 4.2 but if you're feet are stuck in place because you cant tell what's happening then it's worthless.

The processing of information takes time.  I think most people may realize this but i think the vast majority of people truly do not understand that there is a time delay between brain and body that can be significant if its not trained.  It is not negligible.

This is one of the best football analysis I have ever read.   You should print it, frame it, and hand it out on x-mas.

BBH Archive / Re: A Proper Method of Argumentation

I just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread.

Where does it fit when you have a 'feeling' about something but can't verbalize or analyze it?

My thoughts on it are that people who say they have a feeling about something usually have a well constructed reason to do so but are unable to put it into words what it was they saw that made them have a feeling about something.

In many respects, it's similar to what some often call 'instinct'.  The term has been idealized as an extra sensory perception like a sixth sense.  But I believe what is truly being referred to when someone is said to have instinct is the ability to process information so efficiently as to not be burdened by analysis.  Even in the football world where a MLB diagnoses a play as it happens and 'guesses' correctly, it's not happen stance or magical.  It speaks to a level of intelligence.   This is not to say that there isn't sometimes misinformation or misperception at work but more often than not, those that are full of shyte are found out relatively quickly.

I'd be interested to know what you guys think.

I would imagine that when the blitz is so successful, that the oline begins to looks for it even when we bring 4.  Would you say this leads to a lot of one on one blocking, in which case the advantage goes to the D?

Chalk Talk / Re: Question about Getting Inside Pressure
February 12, 2008, 11:32:33 AM
Thanks Otto and MG for your insights.

My understanding of the modern day 3-4 defense is pretty basic and I was just interested to know how much such defenses have to commit in order to get inside push consistently.  Having grown up watching Parcells' Giants I have always been a big fan of the 4 Linebacker set.  But I have really come to appreciate  the 4-3 defense which is so well balanced.   Of course, it helps immensely to have a guy like Tuck inside.

Chalk Talk / Question about Getting Inside Pressure
February 11, 2008, 06:53:58 PM
I was over on the Charger forum and many of them are envious of the inside push the Giants are able to get with the front 4.

My question is:

Is it possible to get inside push in a 3-4 defense without blitzing inside backers?  I put this on the x's and o's forum because I'm not entirely sure where the 3-4 ends line up and I'm assuming the NT is not a pass rusher.

The Giants LB corps was what the Saints aspired to be. This really irritates me that they are ahead of the Giants.
