Homer Jones was tremendous. As good as any WR in the late 60's. De's Jack Gregory and Fred Dryer were all-star caliber wasted.  Van Pelt was my hero as a young fan, totally forgotten and one of the best LBs of his era. Also, the late DT Troy Archer who left us way too soon. Don't forget scrappy Doug Kotar, who would have been an asset on playoff teams.

NFL Draft, NY Giants style / Re: Trading draft picks

There is no way to copy Bill Belichick.  The man is a genius and his moves have no set pattern.  Bill simply knows how to keep his team top notch and his moves are based on what will work at the time.
. Agreed. BB constantly reinvents. The Pats always seem to shuffle pieces so well..their OL always seems to be in flux yet they stay highly productive...not to mention letting some vets go and luring key ones as plug and play guys. An amazing run of success and shrewd moves..and some chicanery as well. Whatever it takes.

Great thread. I would love McCaffrey's versatility..he will be a star..a Frank Gifford type...do anything. Dawkins is very intriguing but I want juice added to Eli's arsenal.

I wouldn't have a problem with Lovie at all. But I think McDermott more so. Shaw and Saban really have great situations-why leave? McDaniels seems a stretch to me with Eli so enamored with McAdoo and the team needing a presence, a gravitas too. Lovie has that kind of respect with players, although he chose badly with the Glazers.

GO,

I do remember some of the 1968 season.. The Giants had trampled the Steelers, Eagles and Redskins (Ronnie Blye did run a kickoff back for a td somewhere) and someone else...but flopped against the Falcs, a bad loss that would portend their mediocrity.  I remember being at fan appreciation day at Shea Stadium in 1968 with the Mets (got a knit cap) looking at the scoreboard crushing the Skins. It seemed like the team had turned it around. Do you remember the TV Guide listings with the actual players and roster numbers?

And that loss dispelled any hopes of being elite. They weren't solid, although Tark really did add juice from the moribund mid-sixties. He was special, although not as good as they'd hoped. To trade Tark off was a huge mistake in hindsight, but that was a dysfunctional era in Giant management. Keep Tark. Pay him and you don't have to slog through Craig Morton and Joe CFL. When teams get to transition Qb's (like GB and Indy)..it makes all the difference from contender to pretender.

That Eli will get clobbered, the defense will crumble in his wake and we'll be talking about drafting a new qb with a freefall. Sorry. They can't score enuff and will go back to the giveaways at some point. Hope I am terribly mistaken. 5-11. Ouch.

Eli had those moments last year of unbelievable fortitude and ability to move and slide, stay within the process and stand and deliver. He simply was incredibly great last year. Amazing. Whatever happened in the off season to fuel his fire, it worked. That throw was on a dime, to heave it almost 45 yards on target is elite, superstar talent. He is very special and we are blessed to have him.

As is. The Jeremy Lin stuff applies to many Giants fans. The Rangers, too. I don't care about that. Yanks have a baseball board, so no problem there, Mets too, ugh. That would be the parameter here, I hope. Breaking stories about celebrities, those kind of things I don't mind.

I find it hard to believe anyone could have such poor ball skills as Will (Hands of Stone) Allen did. He (Prince) has to adjust to the 5-yard rule as his film room tapes show, but no biggie with his skill set; an excellent athlete to help combat the realities of the air-it-out offenses that is NFL football. You can't have enough guys that can play in the secondary, of course. KP (although a safety) also got dinged for his "lack" of interceptions in his senior year, but we all know how special he was before his injury. I like the pick considering the nature of the league. Very good to excellent value there at #19. Overall, I'd give it B+ for our heroes.

weeze,

Suck? No. Be mediocre at best? Yes. A fairly mismatched group of aging vets (Soriano, Rammy, Fukadome) with some promising, but not great young position players (Castro, Colvin, Barney, etc.), Garza looks terrible so far, plus they've lost two starters already (Kashner, Wells) to early season arm woes. GM Hendry made matters worse with his "I told ya so" cowardly rebutt of Quade's use of those aforementioned injured. He has got to go in my book (Hendry) before the Cubs can see the light. It's gonna be another season to forget except for those lovely summer days at the park despite the results.

Jints, of course.

KC is due.

Ravens.

I think the automatic lock are the Chargers to beat the Broncos. They have to. And will.

Giants History / Re: Opening Day 1962

Before he was serenaded out of NY to the strains of "Goodbye Allie" in '69, Allie Sherman, as mentioned, was NFL Coach of the Year back-to-back in '61 & '62. Does anyone realize he was also a Steagle, the WWII-driven merger team consisting of the Eagles/Steelers?

terry,

What thread are you talking about?  Help a hockey admirer out, please!

terry,

I'm with you on this one. The more the public knows about his House of Horrors (and some simply want to move on, not interested in the details), the more terribly twisted he truly is. And organize an entire gambling operation for these fiends involved. For the Giants to bring him in would be a game-changer for me. I'm not apologetic about this: human beings have a responsibility to be kind to animals defenseless, not exploit in some kind of terror for kicks and cash. That is Michael Vick resume. He will never escape that for me. His redemption, to me, is not scoring TDs for the Eagles but making a difference the rest of his life towards his atrocities. LOL knowing his upringing and processed contrition so far. Good luck seeing that happen in eventuality.
