Tarantino also got involved with his close friend Robert Rodriguez who made the movie "Desperado" and influenced the music that was done almost entirely by Los Lobos and Tito and Tarantula. And yes, Antonio Banderas played the guitar and sang in the opening scene as well as played guitar for the kid...a question many people have.

Anyway,  "Quentin showed up on the set of Desperado in 1994 to do his part and said, 'This is cool. No one's done this since Sergio Leone'. This is your dollars trilogy and now you gotta do The Good, The Bad And The Ugly of the series". He is the voice singing in the last of the examples (The House that Love Built) below and has a great voice. Regardless, the music was great and enhanced the movie many times over and Tarantino's influence was all over it

Interestingly, Tito Larriva who is a master musician, is the long haired guy sitting at the bar next to the cash register. A very interesting character having played violin throughout his childhood and singing in the church he attended as well as the choir. He snuck into Yale for a full year pretending to be a student before getting caught and ousted from campus...anyway, I digress. A few interesting clips that show how the music enhances the scenes

The music really puts you in Mexico and is a modern day western done right...IMHO

Hair is a great one
Sound of Music
My Fair Lady etc. etc.

If we are talking just great soundtracks, there is no better than
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Followed by Jaws, the Ten Commandments, Psycho, The Magnificent Seven, and who knows how many others.

I go along with the ones you added, Lenny.  I'll add some more -

BIG COUNTRY, ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, THE SEA HAWK, THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Good call on The Graduate whose music track is still played across the radio to this day and is so ingrained with the story that you can't hear one of the songs without thinking back at the movie...and also O' Brother, Where Art Though, although great music, never became singles that got played on the radio

I concur that Guardians of the Galaxy has good music

My girlfriend likes to watch the three movies of Pitch Perfect and when I hear it in the background, I like most of it

I liked the music in Back to the Future with Huey Lewis and the News. American Graffiti also had some great tunes mixed in if you're a fan of the late 50's and early 60's music

Recording the Giants-Pats game for later viewing so I'll pop in here to leave this.
While it's probably not considered great by the normal, popular criteria I'm very impressed with the soundtrack from the 2004 movie Garden State. Written, directed, and starring Zach Braff. Braff also selected all the songs that make up the soundtrack. He nailed every one of them as they all fit perfectly into the scene where they appeared, as well as the movie at large.
And watching a young Natalie Portman is just icing on the cake.

Empire records had great music in the movie but sadly most of it was left off the soundtrack. I guess they didn't want to pay the royalties.

Good call on Oh Brother Where Art Thou. LOVED that movie and have the CD in my car (Yes, I still listen to CD's in the car) as one of my favorites. George Clooney did his own singing in that movie.
I am a HUGE fan of that Blue grass type of music.

I personally hate Blue Grass...almost as much as you hate the Yankees...LOL  :P

But that Soggy Bottom Boys song "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" is really good and Clooney should've got an Oscar for that performance

You want GREAT music from the movies, leave it to the Master, John Williams to give it to us.

How many of these I should have mentioned
Godfather, Star Wars, Gone With The Wind

Enjoy
