I heard his name mentioned and I have to say I am surprised he got the job.  Feels like a big jump from ILB coach.

From what I heard, this succession plan had been in the works for some time.  It's possible it was even with BB's blessing

Yes, I heard the same....I believe Mayo was being groomed for some time now with the expectations that he would assume the HC job.

He must be an impressive person to get that kind nod from that organization.

Last coach that got BB's blessing was some ST coach named Judge. I wonder how that went?
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

So the Rooney Rule doesn't apply in the case of an inside promotion? That's what happened in the McAdoo move, correct?
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

Why would the Rooney rule apply at all if you're hiring a minority?

Yeah, I don't get it.  When it was Antonio Pierce there was talk that if the Raiders wanted to make him head coach they would still have to comply with the Rooney rule because his position was interim HC, but in the case of a position coach who is a minority the Rooney rule doesn't apply?  I don't get it.  Maybe I'm missing something.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

I was thinking about number two.

Heard the Patriots did something with this prior to the season to allow them to not interview other candidates.  Didn't catch the entire explanation so I have little to offer for that.

This has the story:

I agree with everyone else that it appears this move does not comply with the letter of the rule.   However as @uconngiant pointed out it certainly matches the spirit of the rule.

I guess the Pats went to the league and told them they had an in-house minority candidate they wanted to promote and ask if the league would waive all the other requirements to allow that to happen.  The league would be foolish to say no.   I guess with the Raiders, they are not sold on AP continuing to be their head coach.

I wonder about the Bellichick brothers.

Do they remain on the NE staff?

Or does one or both of them look to establish himself with another organization?

They are both defensive assistants so they could be an asset to a team building a defensive staff.

From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

Interesting question, some possibilities:

1)  Their dad ensured they would have a place on the Patriots at least for this season

2)  Dad takes them with him

3)  They are forced to fend for themselves (although with the last name Belichick, they will likely find doors open easier)
