Has anyone seen, "Lessons in Chemistry"? It's on Apple Plus. We saw the first two episodes and so far, it's good.

We were looking to start something new and I sort of indicated to my wife, let's try a mystery or murder type of story, that is not light and more serious.

After much cajoling, I had heard great things about a series on HBO MAX 'True Detective'. I believe their 4th season just started but, like Fargo, each season is independent of the others, so we decided to start with season 1.

Season 1 stars Woody Harrelson among others. We are now 4 episodes in and to be honest, it is a struggle to keep up. There are parts that are very interesting and other parts that are as confusing as hell. I already know my wife isn't a fan but she is hanging in there for me.
I'm posting a link to this first season and I don't know if anyone else has seen this or is watching it. The series gets great ratings and reviews, but maybe we were looking for something else. I know I'll stay with it for the last 4 episodes and see what happens.

I'm really getting into watching these Netflix short series, (or what we used to call miniseries). I just wrapped up a Swedish series (dubbed in English), called "A Nearly Normal Family."

Only six episodes, it wraps up neatly, and then it's on to the next one.

I am currently watching a show on Netflix called "FISK". It's a comedy from Australia about a female lawyer who takes a job at a small firm run by a brother and sister practicing probate law and wills.
The sister has been suspended and can't practice law so they hire the main character (Fisk) to fill in. The sister is a bit domineering and a stickler for certain things and the brother is laid back it seems to mostly to try and avoid work.
It is not what I would call a laugh riot, but it has some good low key, subtle humor. I like the characters and its very laid back. No real thinking required. I think it only consists of two short seasons of 6 episodes each and they're only 30 minutes long each.
Might not be for everyone, but if you like something along the lines of "British Humor" you may enjoy this.

Thanks Ozzie, sounds like something I'd like. I'll check it out after I finish watching The Valhalla Murders, an 8 episode series produced and filmed in Iceland. I watched the first episode last night.

If you try it Sem, let me know what you think.

We have finished the first season of this detective series, True Detective and to be perfectly honest, I do not see what all the fuss was about. It gets great ratings but we found it boring, and talky and really had no clue as to what was going on for a good part of the series. It did wrap up nicely in the last episode, but until then, whew. Personally, I would not recommend it to anyone.

We did watch a new movie, I believe was on Hulu, 'Pricilla", a story about the relationship between Pricilla  (whatever her last name was before) and Elvis--how they met, how he sort of fell for her, how he got her parents approval to date her and alter have her move into Graceland until they finally broke up. Look, we are huge Elvis fans, and anything to do with him, his relationships, and his marriage was a good thing to watch. We both liked it, although I wouldn't rate it as great. It still amazes me how a giant like Elvis could even consider dating a teenager like Pricilla. She was something like 15 when she met him. What was wrong with the guy?

OK @ozzie , so I just finished season 1 of Fisk. I like it for its sometimes subtle humor, other times outrageous humor, (no laugh track is a bonus). But it's mostly laid back humor, like you mentioned, in a common sitcom formula - a small quirky core group, and the crazy characters that pass through. Similar in that way to American shows like Night Court, Barney Miller, and Newhart from years ago. Due to the accents, and at times quieter dialog, I have to watch with closed captions. And even then find myself having to pause and rewind quite a bit throughout each episode so not to miss anything, but I don't mind doing that. I really like the main character, Helen. Such understated sarcasm. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm enjoying this series.

ozzie

HAHA! Glad you are enjoying it. Your review of it is spot on.
My only complaint is that it only lasts for two short seasons.

I just watched the movie "I Think We're Alone Now" on Tubi. It's a post apocalyptic movie.

Peter Dinklage plays the possible last human on earth who seems to like his reclusive life. He encounters a young free spirited woman that upsets his life.

It's a slow burn but Dinklage kept me watching. Not a great movie but it's free.

During the Writer's and Actors strike, I started watching a lot of British and Aussie TV via Netflix and Britbox (Acorn is another service).  Their top shows are often better done than our American shows.   First, they tend to be better written.  Second, they hire actors and actresses rather than models who can sort of act.

It's sort of funny; after months of watching so much of that TV, I have returned to some of my regular shows (now that the strike is over), and they don't seem as good as I remember them.
