SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE

If this passes, it will be interesting to see what kind of techniques are taught to tackle from behind.

Sort of related, but I think one of the other rule proposals is to change the intentional grounding rules to allow the QBs to ground it from inside the pocket.

I hope the ground rule change doesn't pass.   It's bad enough QBs can toss it away outside the pocket.

It shouldn't be a 15 yard penalty it should be an ejection and a one game suspension. We've seen to many dudes lose an entire season to that nonsense. For the first 90 years of the game players made tackles from behind without risking a compound fracture to the ball carrier. It's lazy and IMHO mean spirited. Knowing the injury risk to you opponent and doing it anyways shows a complete lack of respect for the opponent and the game itself.

You don't think players ever tackled this way?  I just have a hard time believing that it never happened until recently.  Just like the horse collar tackle.

While I agree it's dangerous and should be banned, I will be curious to see how guys tackle when they are trying to catch someone from behind.

The above IS football. Before the owners were sued(poor babies), and changed the game to cover their a$$e$(assets). In some of the film clips flags were properly thrown for hits to the head, most of the tackles did not involve head shots, and would be flagged today. Last season Carter Coughlin was fined for making a beautiful form tackle on a special teams play. A Denver DB who was suspended had a meeting with Goodell where he was told that the DB's are responsible for the safety of WR's. So they need to cover, and provide milk and cookies. Imagine telling Ronnie Lott that. Head shots, and late hits should be absolutely flagged. Timely hard hits below the head should not. Maybe if that were the case tacklers wouldn't use the hip-drop. Madbadger you're right it's lazy, mean spirited, and very risky to the tacklee. More attention should be paid to teaching proper tackling techniques, which does include hard hitting. Football is a collision sport.

It's a derivative of the horse collar. I can't recall ever seeing it in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Then it exploded on the scene 10-15 years ago.

Horrible idea. So is the "body weight on the QB" rule. Both techniques should be legal.

i was so against this until i saw the example of, i believe it was simmons hip dropping geno smith last year. you could see how after he was pulling him down he WHIPPED his body under geno's, instead of just pulling him down. it was absolutely intentional, and should absolutely be banned. rough tackles and freak things happen, but theres no room in the game for things like this.
