"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."
~ Coach Tom Coughlin

Good article.  Who knew Parcells was so into analytics?

My favorite Parcells statement was something like  —  you win football games by having your big guys beat their big guys so your little guys can beat their little guys.

These were the little things about Parcells that made him the HOF coach he is-  Attention to detail (along with his legendary motivational skills)
SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE

Jaime

Parcells didn't preach details to the Media, he preached them to his Team. =D>

President Rick

that nfl channel A Football Life about Curtis martin is also a lot about Parcells.  A father figure to some players, like Boy Wonder.

One of the best examples of "hidden yardage" which paid huge dividends took place during the 1986 NFC Championship Game when Parcells, after Carson won the toss, elected to take the wind versus initial possession of the ball. Not only did that set the tone for what the Giants did that day, but it led to the most blatantly obvious (not so) hidden yardage advantage which was the punting special team's game. Both Sean Landeta, who redeemed himself from "the Ole Miss" the previous year in Chicago, with the game of his career, and Phil McConkey, who fielded every Redskin punt that day, while their opponents floundered in the gusty Giants Stadium winds, stood out in a complete domination of their divisional rival.

That game, more than any other, gives Parcells the credentials to be a subject matter expert on this subject.

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

I love this stuff (goes hand in hand with the 3 phases - win 2 of 3 phases and win the game). I believe the Giants (in)ability to win the hidden yardage battle is the biggest weakness on the team. Gano is outstanding, but the rest of the special teams outfit is a liability.

Look back at Parcells teams - the specials were a big part of the deal. Meggett had you jumping out of your seat on PR's. Outstanding punters. Outstanding gunners. And plenty of fakes and situational strategy. They rarely if ever lost that special teams battle, which meant they only had to win 1 other phase for a W.
