Nick Falato
@nickfalato
A
@DanSchneierNFL
 favorite joins the Giants, Purdue RB Tyrone Tracey Jr.

An older prospect (24), a former WR at Iowa who showed impressive RB skills for a player who only played ONE season at the position

He will likely be the kickoff returner for the #Giants with these new rules. Another EXPLOSIVE weapon for Brian Daboll.

Wasn't really on my personal radar as far as RBs go. Don't love the age either. But will keep an open mind.

He can catch, I hope he's explosive.

Converted WR. Low miles on legs as RB. Very shifty and will be a great ST player. I like his RAS score. He's an offensive weapon. Not a "Workhorse Back", but more like a poor man's McCaffrey. He's more dangerous taking slant passes or sweeps. Should be a good compliment to the RBs we already have. At least we know he can catch a ball and make something happen

Because we have Devin Singletary, Dante Miller, Eric Gray, and Gary Brightwell. a DT like Mekhi Wingo is more needed. Like I said months ago, why not take a chance on Michael Pratt in the latter rounds. He could sit for one year, low risk, perhaps high reward.

New to position means there is still a lot he is learning on the fly.

Not surprising he would still have trouble with some of the nuance of playing RB. If you beleive some of the reports sounds like Upside, tools pick whose floor might be an explosive KO returner.

Not bad for pick 166....

Like Ivan Pace Jr. last year, Wingo might not even get drafted because he's considered too small for the defensive line. But like Pace last year (didn't get drafted because of his size, then became 1st team all rookie as LB)

Justin Penik
@JustinPenik
Two stats that I LOVE for Tyron Tracy right off the bat:

Among Draft Eligible RB's with 60 carries:

1st (!!) in yards after contact per attempt
10th in breakaway rate
17th in missed tackles forced, one more than Trey Benson

Love the advanced numbers!

From Walter Football;

Tyrone Tracy, RB, Purdue
Height: 5-11. Weight: 209.
40 Time: 4.48.
Projected Round (2024): 4-6.
4/22/24: Tracy never received a big workload in college, but he played well in 2023, averaging 6.3 yards per carry on 113 attempts for 716 yards and eight touchdowns. He had 19 catches for 132 yards. In 2022, he had 28 catches for 198 yards. Back in 2019, he totaled 36 receptions for 589 yards and three scores. At the next level, Tracy could compete to be a backup runner and special teams contributor. He helped himself with a fast time at the combine.

Of those RBs, only one has proven he's anything in the NFL. And at least one of the others won't make the team. They needed another prospect at this position, especially now that they're moving to a committee approach.

166. NEW YORK GIANTS: TYRONE TRACY, RB, PURDUE
Height: 5-foot-11

Weight: 209 pounds

STRENGTHS
Combine star
3-down potential
Explosive playmaker
WEAKNESSES
Experience
Instincts
Power
Team Fit: A former receiver, Tyrone Tracy is a project at RB. But he could pay off handsomely. His burst and fluidity are uncommon, and the Giants had a big need.

Grade: B-

In the 5th round you are looking for intangibles or a player you can plug in that does 1 thing really well. KR/PR has been horrible for multiple years now and now that is probably solved.

Has to be a real hidden gem to get excited about.  So far only high RAS and low mileage on legs and kickoff ability seem positive.

He's a project with a ton of talent. Hope our coaches can tap into that athleticism. Rare for 5th round picks to become much, so you go for athleticism and try to get the most out of them through coaching. Happened last year when we drafted a name no one ever heard of in Trey Hawkins III

I trust that Schoen, Daboll, and scouts know more than me and know what they are doing. I know that they have wanted to improve STs

Good after contact and explosive but raw and older. His superpower is versatility with RB WR KR value. Really nice pick if he can develop quickly with our coach who developed Kamara as that multi-use weapon in NOLA.

Ceri (ukgiantsfan) loves him btw!!!

24 is mid prime age for NFL RBs, so if he's a project I hope for everyone's sake that it's not a long term project.

New kickoff rule has everything to do here with Tracy. He seems like an out-of-the box kc guy. I assume some teams will simply blast the ball anyway to the 35, if they can.

But unpredictable I welcome with staid offense.

Good pick to backup Singletary and can learn behind him. He can return kicks, catch out of the backfield or out of the slot.

Q. Where does Tyrone Tracy in that kind of mold? He's going to be 25.

BRIAN DABOLL: Some of these guys are older, too, relative to what people have been through the past few years, I would say, COVID and all those other things. Some guys are a little bit older. He's a former receiver. In terms of yards per carry, he's been pretty good. He's an athlete who has played receiver and then played running back and has some good production. We'll throw him in the mix. Whether that's in the kickoff return game or whether that's at running back or the receiving part of it, we've got to do a good job of getting him in here and seeing where he's at and then trying to fit him into the things that he can do well.

I'm actually mildly warming up to this pick a little. I'm not going to make any predictions on this guy, but I kind of like the unconventional storyline and am wondering if that scared teams off and possibly led to him being a bit undervalued. The inexperience at RB coupled with him being 24 is not a very palatable headline. This guy does seem to be legitimately talented though, which is the most important thing by far. I don't see him being a star or anything, but as a best case scenario maybe he could end up being one of these jack-of-all trades/master-of-none types like a Cordarelle Patterson. Guys like that can play until they're older than most conventional, between-the-tackles, 250 carries type backs. It might have been a pretty nice pick for where we got him. Let's see.

I think the starting RB position is wide open. Gray is probably pushing Singletary for the starting spot. Singletary, like Hodgins and Isiah McKenzie, are here because Daboll knows what these former Buffalo players can do. He is a placeholder who got a ton of work in Houston last season after Pierce was ineffective. The Giants have already cut Corbin twice, Miller is a project, Deon Jackson is a good receiver who showed he can start in a pinch, and I'm not sure why Brightwell is still here. I think there is space for Tracy to get some touches in the backfield as he develops. He can help on Special teams but I don't believe that is why he was drafted.

Dante Miller could be the real sleeper here. Due to a NCAA snafu that prevented him from playing at South Carolina, he became eligible for Free Agency. He's 5-9, 200 lbs who ran a 4.28 40x (that's not a typo) and bench pressed 28 reps. Both would be better than any other RB at the Combine. Not sure what plans the Giants have for him. But as they say "you can't teach speed ".
