OBJ re-signing followed by the enormous dead cap hit.  Single bad decision set us back..maybe multiple years.

Firing Coughlin as #2 mistake.

I do think we've reached "peak football".  There is a declining base of parents who want their kids to play contact football.  Historically, the fan base of any sport usually is dominated by people who've played that sport.  The NFL is an institution, however, and it will be decades before it is eclipsed by something else.

Given that my time was wasted for this past season, effectively, when our LT was not available for most of the first half of the season, I have to ask why in the world did I misinvest so much time following this team?  The injuries are ruining the fan experience.  At least the one that I enjoy.  I guess it doesn't matter much to fantasy footballers if one particular team loses its best players due to injuries.

As far as jumping the shark, I thought the league must jumped the shark when the announcers were more interested in Emmitt Smith Dancing With the Stars than with the game they were announcing.

As I get older I'm getting more interested in doing sports than watching sports.  But that's bucking the trend of our nation of couch potato spectators.

Quote from: Painter on February 12, 2024, 05:00:26 PMIt wasn't easy but I managed to avoid watching all but the 20 minutes or so of actual football through the magic of remote electronics or electronic remoteness if you prefer. As for how, that is my secret.

Cheers!

That's the way to do it!  If it weren't for DVR, or it's streaming substitute, I wouldn't watch.

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 29, 2024, 12:27:51 PMComposure matters in the big games.  The sort of composure that usually comes from experience and/or quality veteran leadership.
They didn't play well when things didn't go their way.  Good example of how a truly battle-tested team (like the last two NYG SB teams) knows not to do stupid things at the wrong moments.

Three other brain farts from the Ravens.  First, the stupid head butt personal foul.  Second, the receiver on the interception putting his hand up (I'm wide open) when he was nowhere near open, with Jackson then underthrowing the ball leading to the INT in the end zone.  And another of the same, speaking of Beckham, who puts his hand up when he has all of 1/4 step on the CB.  Just dumb stuff that a high school head coach would get annoyed by.

And Jackson tossing his helmet...not a great sign of leadership there on the sideline.

Quote from: TDToomer on January 15, 2024, 11:06:01 AMEagles have the worst fans. Cowboys have the worst media. It's like a nuclear bomb went off at ESPN today. They are spending 90% discussing the Cowboys and barely mentioned the Lions ending their 32 year playoff victory drought or previewing the 2 games today. Even without Skip Brainless they cannot hide their Dallas bias.
I've been to a few Cowboys games in Texas wearing a Giants jersey.  Would never dream of taking that risk in Philly.

The Cowboy fans at the game, both before and after the Giants got their asses kicked, were pretty good natured.  Some fun ribbing, but that's all.  No one tried to pee on me in the restroom.  And I didn't see any fights anywhere.  Multiple notches up from Philthadelphia.

Agree with you on stadiums.  Public money should not go towards them.  The economic analyses show that the spending impact pretty much cannibalizes entertainment spending that would otherwise be spent in the same city but at different locations and at different times.  But the Giants are one of the few (only?) franchises to not get public funding for a stadium.

Another take on the original post.  I believe (this is armchair speculation) that Mara has less wealth outside of the team than most other owners.  (This needs to be checked.) I think that means he is more conservative with his decisions than other owners.  That could lead to going with safer choices which also leads to over-reliance on people you personally know.  Like hiring Mac-A-Don't.

I think we also need a new strength and conditioning coach.

You don't need much talent (foot dexterity, hip flexibility, etc.) to convert 3rd-and-1.  You just got to push the guy across from you just a little bit.

Our guys get pushed around on the LOS. all the time, especially in short yardage situations.  I just don't think they're as physically prepared as other Olines.

I'm just half-amazed and half-angry.  All of these linemen, even the worse lineman on the worse offensive line in the NFL, succeeded very well in high school.  He was taught how to handle defensive line stunts in high school, and he succeeded at high school.

Then he went to college.  He handled defensive line stunts in college, just as he was taught in high school, and he succeeded very well in college.  Otherwise he wouldn't even be invited to an NFL tryout.

Then he joins the Giants.  And now he can't handle simple defensive line stunts.

Big Blue Huddle / Offensive Line Frustrations

Interested in hearing the take from those of you who either played, coached, or are very knowledgeable on offensive line play.  I played G in High School.  We weren't very good and I wasn't very good either.

But I knew what to do when the defensive line stunted.

What was going on out there?  I can't believe that--year after year--the Giants can't handle simple DT-DE twist plays.

Justin Pugh looked completely lost out there.  This is incomprehensible for a seasoned vet.  Then throw in his 5-yarder for illegal motion.  Just unforgivable for a Guard.  Was Pugh making the line calls?  He was looking back at the QB on almost every play.  If so, why isn't the center making these calls this late in the season?

If you're Glowinski...dude you had 1 job.  You blew it and got flagged.  Go back to the bench.

I find it very hard to watch a game with multi-millionaire professionals making high school errors that our HS football coach would have gone apoplectic over.  Tough to watch.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Thursday Injury Report

I wonder if Giants that change teams (e.g. Julian Love) experience more/fewer hamstring injuries than when they played for the Giants.  I think it would make for an interesting analysis.

Quote from: Giant Obsession on September 27, 2023, 04:50:59 PMBarkley will miss 4 games.  Bet on it.  Those 4 missed games will equal out the money he believes he should be paid.
His cost/game at the end of the season may end up greater than for Jones.

My observation is that you better find an activity that you like.  If exercise becomes work, then you need super-human discipline to keep at it and very few people have that.

The social angle, workout buddy system, is great.  You combine commitment to someone else with a better workout because you get to talk to a friend.

I bike 3x per week, typically once with a bike club, and two other times per week with different ride buddies.  I'm really spending time with friends, I just happen to have a bike under me.  If I'm working out with weights, or doing pushups, I'm really listening to music.  I just happen to be exercising at the same time.

Have fun first.  Then exercise ain't work.

There is a tendency, in my opinion, to over-extrapolate today's news into the future.  The underlying economics for business travel have certainly changed somewhat, but are still there.  If you can get an edge over your competitor because your salespeople travel to see your customers and your competitors don't, then you can guarantee that the travel will occur.

That said, the required investment most of us made in remote skills development wouldn't have happened without covid.  So the fact that people are more technically proficient at remote meetings means there will definitely be less travel.  But how much less?

Business people have always hated travel.  So I don't agree with the idea that there's been a great awakening "Hey, we don't have to travel anymore!" has occurred.  I was doing video calls in the 90s.  People always knew that the technology was there but chose not to use it.

I believe the recent research is that remote work has lower productivity.  But I'd need to find the citation to say for sure.

The Front Porch / Re: Midway’s Strategic Lessons
June 07, 2021, 01:10:03 PM
One of the recurring themes of WWII is that the German and Japanese leadership underestimated their enemies, repeatedly.

The Japanese underestimated US intelligence.  At the battle of the Coral Sea, prior to Midway, US aircraft carriers show up, half of the remaining US Pacific fleet carriers are there.  How in the world did that happen?  The Japanese don't change their codes.  And then they get surprised shortly after at Midway, this time with all of the remaining US carriers.

Yamamoto conceives of the Midway invasion.  But Nagumo is tasked to carry it out.  Nagumo is doctrinaire and not an adaptible thinker.  The first Japanese planes fly over Midway island and there are no planes in sight.  Why is that?  He should've immediately sensed he'd walked into a trap.

The Japanese underestimated the will of the American people.  The War in the Pacific was over the day after Pearl Harbor, just nobody realized that until later.

At the lowest common denominator level, can you imagine being one of those guys in a landing craft approaching those beaches.  Speaking of bravery and patriotism!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm watching "Greatest Events of WWII in Color" on NFLX.  Season 1 episode 6 is on D-day.  The commentator just mentioned the fear that the German lookouts must have felt on the morning of June 6 seeing 6,000 ships heading in their direction.  A certain death sentence is probably what they felt.  Interesting counterpart to your observation.
