Quote from: Jolly Blue Giant on April 25, 2024, 10:13:30 AMArticle in this morning's NY Post

The opening statement sounds about right..."The NFL should hire an auctioneer to take commissioner Roger Goodell's place on stage this year..." LOL

https://nypost.com/2024/04/24/sports/anything-possible-when-nfl-draft-2024-kicks-off/

Wouldn't it be exciting if the draft was an actual auction?  Teams get bidding points based on prior year's record, and then they auction off the players.  Pre-draft trades would be players for points.

Quote from: EDjohnst1981 on April 25, 2024, 02:20:42 PMI'm excited to see what the actual decision makers do.

The Daniel Jones era is either over or he has run out of excuses as the draft a weapon. (Although, we thought he was out of excuses last season).

Looking forward to seeing the direction they go in.

Oh, did the OL magically become competent last year?

Quote from: expatriot on April 25, 2024, 12:20:53 PMAfter all the chatter and speculation watch them draft Bowers lol

Or Alt.  Which would put my Tv at risk.

The only thing I can say for sure is that after this evening some people will be happy and some will be sad/mad.  But I'm ready, did my ritual re-watching of Draft Day last night.  One of the nice things about being on Pacific time is we have 3 fewer hours to wait.

Quote from: TDToomer on April 25, 2024, 10:24:43 AMBecause the talent is still there and it is better than anything else on the roster. With only 6 draft picks and many needs we may not draft a TE. You can't just go into training camp with Bellinger, Cager and the 2 nobodies they recently signed. I'd rather see how he looks this summer.

He hasn't shown that the talent, and the health needed to exploit it, is still there for 3 years.

Quote from: coggs on April 24, 2024, 07:08:57 PMI am aware.  Few teams have, which is why I think if one of these guys fit that, they would do whatever they can to try to get him.

That may be.  But my point was that we won 4 Superbowls without ever having one.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 24, 2024, 03:50:22 PMTwo of my jobs literally risked people dying if I screwed up.  So when I hear about the "high pressure" entertainment industry jobs...

There are different kinds of pressure.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 24, 2024, 02:56:35 PMRich,

One thing I learned is to be true to my own convictions.   The reality is doing what you think will please your boss or others, will not protect you if things go south.   My feeling is if I am going to be called on the carpet for a decision, it will be one that I made based on my convictions.   I found being reamed out for a decision I didn't really agree with was a terrible experience.

That's well and good, but I place very little credence in factors in a "regular" job having much applicability in the high pressure world of professional sports and jobs for which there are only 32 openings in the entire country.  Just my opinion.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Waller getting divorced
April 24, 2024, 03:09:39 PM
It may be harsh to say it but I'd like it even less to have a guy whose motivation may be to make up financially what he's losing in the divorce and who is likely to be distracted by the emotional side of going through a divorce than I did about having a guy who just couldn't make up his mind for unspecified reasons.  Now that we know the reason I want them to cut him even more.

Quote from: Trench on April 24, 2024, 11:36:06 AMI strongly disagree about not having talent. WanDale, Hyatt, Slayton, Waller, even Bellinger had a very good rookie year.

But none of those guys play OL and for me, until we see differently on the field, they are still the elephant in the room.

Quote from: kingm56 on April 24, 2024, 09:42:39 AMThat comports with my interactions with young people.  My oldest son graduated with a double-major in electrical and mechanical engineering; this is great because he'll be supporting my youngest, who desperately wants to be a social media influencer (focusing on video games).  It's up to the middle son to determine if we're good parents or not  ;)

I get the part about wanting to be an influencer, it's basically being a con man.  What I don't get are why the influencees are influenced by the influencers.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 24, 2024, 11:53:54 AMI keep hearing the unsubstanciated claims of Mara meddling.  Apparently John Mara has heard those accusations as well

"They knew my feelings that I was hoping it didn't come to this, but again, at the end of the day I know sometimes every once in a while I read that — 'Oh, he's meddling, he's meddling,'" the NYG co-owner acknowledged candidly. Reacting: "No, we've run our organization the same way for many, many years. If the head coach and general manager have a conviction about a player or a group of players, I'm going to let them go ahead and make those decisions."

https://heavy.com/sports/new-york-giants/john-mara-saquon-barkley-eagles-meddling/

That sounds disingenuous to me.  Whether or not the coach and general manager have a conviction about something is going to be influenced by what the owner has been saying and by a personal desire to survive, IMO.

Quote from: Gmo11 on April 24, 2024, 10:11:47 AMI can absolutely see a scenario where Mara and Co. are wondering why the hell did we pay Jones all that money last season when now we are so done with him we have to give up other picks in order to replace him.  In a vacuum that would be a fair question to ask.

But much like a lot of the fan base, Mara I assume was also tantalized by the playoff appearance/victory and was not going to be signing off on dumping Jones at that point.  THAT also would have been a hard sell even if it's exactly the right thing they should have done.

So when Mara asks well wait a minute why do we need to do all of this to get a QB now when we just paid Jones, Schoen needs to be able to say to him: "I would have done it last year but you wanted to try one more time with Jones.  We tried.  It failed. He failed.  Now you HAVE to let me do things my way."  If he can't say that to Mara he should leave the job, if he can say that to Mara and gets ignored...he should leave the job or get fired from it.

We cannot have ownership getting in the way of things any more.  It's Mara's team, he can do what he wants with it, but if what he wants is to win he needs to stay the hell out of the way.

Well stated.

I just hope the Giants aren't the 1 out of 12, if you know what I mean.

Quote from: Puffy on April 24, 2024, 10:34:08 AMI'd be fine with Penix IF the Giants trade down or trade back up into the first round after taking a receiver at #6.

That's about where I am, however I opine on this from a place of ignorance.  I don't follow college ball nor am I a drafting, so just about everything I 'know' is from the chatter.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 23, 2024, 10:35:25 PMNo one mentioned Jones in this thread besides you. I've also always respected your takes on Jones even if I didn't agree, so I am unsure what he has to do with this or the need to add him to the conversation but ok.

This is a message board, not a collection of thread silos.
