Quote from: kingm56 on May 04, 2024, 12:08:06 PMThe Simms and Eli example are now 25 and 40 years old; plus, Eli didn't take 6 years to mature. He was a SB MVP by year 3...it's an overused and poor example.
Today, the game is fundamentally different and QB maturation reflects that reality. Kids have access to professional camps from age 8 on, colleges are no longer running wishbones and student body left/right; today college offenses are as sophisticated as the NFL. College nutrition and strength program are also on par with NFL clubs. It no longer takes 3+ years for NFL QBs to emerge. Just look at every QB to enter the NFL in the past decade; you'll notice an obvious and fundamental trend.

Our paperboy was busy playing school sports so his parents would deliver for him. One winter late at night we had an inch or so of snow, and his mother apparently slipped stepping off our one-step front patio. She broke her ankle, or so her lawyer said. He also said she laid there screaming in agony for 30 minutes, (strange, our bedroom window was about 12 feet away and we didn't hear a sound). In fact we had no idea this even happened until about 3 months later when we got a letter from her lawyer advising us we were being sued, and to contact our insurance company. My agent told me their lawyer was a known ambulance-chaser. They paid without questions, and I canceled my subscription. End of story.
Quote from: MightyGiants on May 06, 2024, 08:28:17 AMDrafting just to draft a QB no longer sets a franchise back 5 years or so. It still sets the franchise back two or three years. With the historically low success rate (less than 50%) of first-round QBs, dating a QB hoping they will prove to be a franchise QB is not a good idea. With the 6th pick (and with an elite WR prospect available), it would be akin to malpractice to ignore the elite prospect and reach for a QB prospect, hoping that they turn out (rather expecting) to be a franchise-caliber QB.
For what it's worth, I heard Jordan Raanan say the Giants were also high on Jayden Daniels. So, presumably, the Giants would take a QB if one of the top three were available to them.
Quote from: Jolly Blue Giant on May 04, 2024, 11:42:09 AMHe's gotten better over time. The thing is, once you get tagged with the moniker "drops passes", every drop is magnified a thousand times so fans can reaffirm their belief and boast that "they knew it" and "they told you so". Yet Slayton actually had fewer drops (percentage wise) than most of the WRs in the league, including J. Smith-Njigba, S. Diggs, M. Evans, G. Wilson...and in fact, didn't even make the top 25 players in the NFL for drop percentage. Last season, Slayton had 3 drops and 50 catches https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/stats?category=receiving&season=2023&seasonType=reg&sort=rec_drops&sortOrder=desc
It's sorta like DJ and turnovers. In 2022, when he was called a "turnover machine", he was ridiculed incessantly for a turnover as it verified fans' negative opinions of him. Yet, he only had 8 turnovers in 17 games. Compare that with Dak who had 16 TOs in 12 games, or compared with Josh Allen's 19 TOs etc. Yet, every turnover by DJ brings out the haters who say, "see what I told you???". Meanwhile, Dak is being touted as a "franchise QB" by the media
Once something gets stuck in a fan's mind, they watch for, and keep track of, and magnify every fault to confirm their staunch beliefs. Fans can be brutal...especially when vying to prove they know more than others about the game and team
Quote from: zephirus on May 06, 2024, 10:00:39 AMIt's a really good question and there's a very high likelihood his fate has already been decided. Didn't we already play this game going into 2022? Is there any 1-year resume that washes out bad taste of 2023 from our mouths?
Schoen has shown some real prudence by not reaching for a new quarterback (or any position really). He didn't give up a big ransom to move up to 3. He didn't panic and take JJ McCarthy. He understands the implications contracts have on the cap and generally has the economics under control. Next off-season, there are no rules for him. Frankly it's sad that we'll have to wait until Year 3 of a GMs reign to see what he'll actually do when there are no handcuffs on him.
