It took the Giants 10 years to replace Phil Simms

It's beginning to feel like it will take another ten years to replace Eli Manning.   Can't wait for the 2019 or 2020 season. 


On a related note, it's like Tommy DeVito might just end up saving Daniel Jones' starting job as his play helps push the Giants out of contention for drafting a QB in the upcoming draft. 

This is the pattern I have been saying would play out this season.  It's the Giants' favored pattern-  Lose a bunch of games early so that games are meaningless by Halloween or Thanksgiving and then win a bunch of meaningless games so they can't get the sort of elite talent that changes the fortunes of a franchise.

To me, it doesn't matter where they pick. It's WHO they pick and how they develop them.

It took almost 15 years to replace Tarkenton. Simms didn't become the regular starter until '84.

We did have Collins, who led us to a SB appearance, in between Simms and Eli.

I have said in the past that the Giants model of drafting a guy and then ignoring the position until its painfully obvious that the guy they drafted is a failure is an awful way of doing business, especially considering how important the position has become.

We aren't alone in that boat as are most other teams, but the Packers have been smart enough to draft back up quarterbacks every couple of years and allowed them to develop behind the starter. Hassleback, Brooks, Brunnell, Flynn, Rodgers and Love are all guys they drafted despite having an elite starter. We just settle for some vet who has no upside and who's primary trait is that they're just bad enough that our starter never has to look over his shoulder. It's great for the starter but catastrophic for the franchise if the starter gets hurt or sucks. 

If we can't get one of the the top tier guys they should draft a guy that will fall to the second round and there will likely be a handful of them and hope they got lucky. Worst thing they could do is reach for a guy in the first round. Use the pick on the line, again, and add a receiver with their second, second round pick before taking a back in the third.

We got very lucky to time that one perfectly. Collins was an alcoholic who wore out his welcome in Carolina. Them cutting him caused him to get sober and we slid in and signed him right around that time.

I didn't count Collins because the Giants made a major trade-up to acquire Eli Manning even though they had Collins who was only 31 at the time.  If the team felt like they had their franchise QB, they could have traded down for a king's ransom and used those picks to really strengthen the team.

Plus and perhaps more importantly the Giants ended up releasing Collins after they drafted Eli, rather than trading him to another team.

we could have had collins, picked up Warner [only 1st ballot HOF] and saved the ranch we traded to get Eli, if you want another scenario.  And we still could have gotten big ben in our regular spot that year as well.  Glad Eli worked out but if he hadn't it would make some folks willing to throw even more $$$ at DJ.

Kerry Collins had a rocket for an arm but he was always a very limited QB and that 2000 season was a fluke that had a lot to do with the defense being excellent. He and the Giants went 4-12 in 2003 leading to the Manning/Rivers draft. Collins then refused to stay with the Giants when Manning was drafted even though he would have surely started the 2004 season if he had. The Giants released him, he wound up with the Raiders but didn't do much with them. And then they acquired Kurt Warner who was the starter through the first 9 games and went 5-4 before Tom Coughlin switched to Manning for the rest of the season.

Mahomes came to an already-successful winning team that IMO needed only a better QB to take the next step.

He turned out to be better than the guy he replaced, so kudos to him for not blowing a golden opportunity, but many other guys taken since then could have driven that Ferarri to at least one championship, IMO.
