Quote from: Bill Brown on Today at 06:54:44 PMI watched the 4th episode of the Disney story. Again I found it to be very interesting. A couple of "Wow I didn't know that!" things. I hope you're still watching Lenn.

For anyone who hasn't seen it but may some day I would recommend you watch episode 4 before episode 3.

Bill

I did see it Bill and like you, WOW, I didn't know that. And, like you, we wondered why they put last week's episode before this one as the timeline would have been better.

PS-- mI used to have one of those Mickey watches. Wish I still did.

So my two prime students are really on the ball.

Yes, the pitching rubber is part of the field. If the ball hits the rubber to be a fair ball it must pass 1st or 3rd before going foul. Since it didn't, yes, it is a foul ball.

In the second question, this is a bit trickier. The situation isn't common, as Steve alluded to, but it has happened, white a bit more than one would think.

The key to this is intent, and that is all on the umpire. If, like every other hit, the batter just drops his bat, then the bat is part of the field, and if a ball hits it, it is legal and a live ball. If, in the umpire's judgment, the batter threw his bat and that hit the ball, then the batter would be called out and the play dead. In most cases, the batter will usually drop his bat as he runs towards 1st base. If the ball hits the bat, then it is still alive and the play goes on.

We used to teach in our school, that the best way to see this is if the ball hits the bat, then it is usually unintentional and allow the play to continue. If the bat hits the ball, then we call the batter out and everyone goes back to previous bases.

I sure don't want to hijack this thread but it does seem to be going in a different sort of direction, so here's another little nudge in that direction

 Let's try another rule question

Line drive hits off the pitching rubber, goes up in the air, and is caught by the 1st baseman in foul territory.

What's the call?

And another one that happened to us earlier this season

Batter bunts the ball up the 1st base line. He drops his bat and it is in fair territory. The bunt rolls and hits the dropped bat and goes into foul territory.

What do you have on this play?

I have told this story several times but since you asked about Admirals, I can add this.

I had a very good friend who passed away a couple of years ago, who was on the USS Missouri when the Japanese surrendered. When he passed, he was one of 4 others who were still alive from that crew. He was a mar one who was assigned to the Missouri and all they did was train for the invasion of Japan.
So what about the Admiral? Since the Missouri was the flagship of the Pacific fleet, Admiral Halsey was its commander and was always on the ship. My friend used to relate stories to me about how Halsey used to come down and play volleyball with the crew. He always inquired about their families and, to my friend, just seemed like a general good guy. The crew loved him for that. They never knew about the bombs dropped on Japan, but at the end of a day in August 1945, Halsey came on the intercom and told all crew to wear their dress uniforms for the next day, they all knew something was up. When they saw McArthur land on the flight deck word was out that the Japanese were going to surrender.
The Missouri was the last ship to return to the USA, maybe 6 months after the war. It was the flagship and it made its way back visiting many other ports. Halsey always let the men have liberty when ver he was able to.

I can't speak of any military genius about him, but as a Admiral, he was well respected by his crew.

I remember this night very well. As much as we were all Mets fans, and I didn't have Pic in pic on my TV. I set up a portable TV right next to my main TV. The Giants were on the main TV and the Mets on the smaller portable. The Giants/Redskin game was my main concern, but having the Mets winning was a much-added plus.

As many of you know, we have other forums on this site. (maybe some don't know). One of the best things about coming here besides talking football is going over to the Front Porch.
This is really a very slow time of year for football fans and I understand many don't frequent this forum as often as you might during football seasons, but if you do and want something to just chat about, take a look at our Front Forch part of the site.

This is NOT a place for anything that would get anyone upset, no politics, no anything that would be characterized as even confrontational. Just guys (and maybe a lady or two) talking things we might just chat with among friends.  We have a great core group of posters that basically frequent this forum every day and we can always use more.

So, for example, we have many great ongoing threads.
Heard a good joke or seen a good cartoon, let us know. (over 100 pages long now)
Seen a good TV series or movie or would like someone else's opinion on what is good on TV now, again, tell us.
We  have a terrific thread on photography (have a pic you want to share, post it here)
I have an ongoing thread on baseball rules I post questions and we discuss any sort of rule you might want to know about)
Have a favorite Female rocker, let us know in this great thread
We also have several ongoing threads on games we play online (We had a 200-page thread on Wordle alone)
If you like music, tell us your favorites and ask others who they like
We also had just a wonderful thread about memories from the 1960's (many of us are old)

I can go one for a while, but you get the point. There are no controversial threads, just some guys discussing things other than football. So stop by and join in some of our discussions.

Quote from: Sem on May 18, 2024, 09:18:39 PMLen, this reminds me of another MLB situation - runner on 1st and the batter hits the ball down the line and a fan touches the ball while it's in play, (and ultimately is kicked out of the stadium), and the hit is ruled a ground rule double. I've heard announcers in the past say that it's within the umpire's the discretion to allow the runner on first to score if, in the umpire's opinion, he would have scored had the fan not interfered. Yet I have never seen this happen, even when it's obvious the runner would have scored. I've only seen the runner on first get two bases and must stay at third.
Can you comment on this?

Steve

If it is within the umpire's ability to do so (which I really don't know it is), it will always be called a ground rule's double. If I am not mistaken, there is only one instance in the MLB rule book that authorizes 3 bases on a play and that is when a fielder throws his glove at a hit ball and makes contact with it. The batter is awarded 3 bases.

Quote from: GIANTS1 on May 19, 2024, 08:22:48 AMthe answer above is b double play. runner cannot interfere with a fielder.

As I said, it is within the umpire's choice to call a DP, but that is rare. It would only be called if, in the umpire's judgment, the interference was intentional and done with the intent to stop a very possible DP. I can admit I have called it twice, in High School games, but again, you will get a major argument and you have to be positive about the so-called intent. But again, it is in the umpire's ability to do so.

That is ONE side of the story, I have not heard the police officer's side. Why do certain people always believe the one side that sort of suits their agenda?

Anyway, still doesn't answer why whoever didn't obey the command of the officer, no matter how silly, stupid, or irrelevant.
Great, you may be in the right, but you also could be injured or even shot dead because you have no idea what is going thru the officer's mind at that particular moment.

Do you look both ways crossing a street even if you have the right of way? Do you really believe every car will stop because you are in a crosswalk and the law says cars must stop? You could be 100% in the right, but you will also be injured or dead.

No matter how silly, stupid, or whatever a police officer's command may be, you, as a citizen, are required to obey it and THEN sort if out.
