Two games. Not much of a sample to declare a player a bust or a trade a disaster, even running on a New York clock. Burns is a Giant. Let us hope he turns this around and we look back on his early games as a settling in period. No matter who is GM, HC and QB next year this team is not doing anything if Burns does not perform.

We need to give Tracy, Hyatt, Robinson more snaps on O as they are the future. If anyone can explain to me what Theo Johnson is delivering to earn his dominant snap count I'd be grateful so surely if he is being "developed" so should eg Hyatt?

On D every time Dex is on the sidelines teams run it right down our throats for big yards. We have no DT depth. At CB Flott only gets those snaps on a bad team. As for the Edge guys, the scheme is not helping them but the whole point of the Burns investment was that he and Thibs are the ones meant to be providing the help to others not needing it...

Yesterday was frustrating as there were good things (OL protection and running game, Jones/Nabers trust, Dru Phillips) but more bad things including the coaching (and pre-game personnel decisions) in all three phases at different points plus the usual suspects (Flott, every DT not called Dex, the invisible Edge rushers).

Talent wise I think the level is there to win games when Jones is functional but we do not have a big margin for error so cannot make mistakes with play-calling or individually (Singletary fumble, key penalties). Nor can we regularly survive getting stiffed by the officials like on that BS holding call on Phillips on a critical down.

We will win games. Probably a couple too many for our draft position though I am not sure our QB answer is coming in the next draft vs free agency or 2026 to be honest.

On the plus side Nabers, Nubin and Phillips will help us this season and beyond. On the downside, pretty much everything else. Bowen has to figure out how to tighten up the middle of the D to give the Edge guys more chance to impact plays. Any vaguely respectable DT sat on couches?

A horrible loss, 95% on the coaches IMO

Nabers will blame himself for the drop (and he should) but without him we had no shot with our incessant bending D, Singletary fumble and too many bad plays on third down.

De Vito deserves credit for getting the most out of his limited raw talent. If the two guys ahead of him both played to their potential in the same way and had a similar 'can do' attitude and energising locker room presence we'd have rather fewer problems. He's not going to save us but he has earned a little respect for over-achieving.

Quote from: TDToomer on September 12, 2024, 11:50:51 AMWhat went wrong with Julian Love's time with the Giants in that he is not a Pro Bowler who got a huge extension and we are starting rookies and nobodies at Safety?

Our rookie and nobodies are decent footballers with potential to be better to be fair to them and probably don't deserve to catch strays here.

Love was a solid player with us when used as a S but he was a victim of his versatility, competition (Peppers, McKinney) and scheme lack of fit for much of his stay.

Hernandez also suffered from our scheme not always matching/utilising his strengths and even more so from the carousel of bad OL coaching.

It happens, particularly on bad teams going through front office and coaching staff transitions.

If Neal never establishes himself as a starter at any position he will merit the word bust. If he becomes a functional G for us he will be over-drafted but not a bust.

Thibodeaux might be overdrafted but 15.5 sacks, 99 tackles (51 solo) in 2 seasons is not a bust by any sane metric. We chased a need taking third edge off the Board at 5 when Stingley and Sauce went 3, 4. The debate at the time was mainly whether we should take Neal or Ekwonu at 5 knowing Carolina were taking a T. One or two posters were never convinced on KT but most were happy at the time. Drafting remains a crap shoot.

Perhaps the big lesson is if you have a choice between the third player at a high value position of need or the first at another take the latter...Garrett Wilson in this case.

The top 3 guys are the ones I picked out watching the game and Van Roten, Johnson, McCloud and Thibodeaux all made my horror show list so whilst PFF definitely is not perfect it is hard to argue this week.

I do think Jones has been kindly graded given they blame him for 3 sacks, 7 pressures and both Int but there were a few nice throws interspersed with the dysfunctional. They might shift their data despite the fact that they did nothing to change the game.

DJ throwing Interceptions staring down his first target and running himself into pressures (7) and sacks (3)* as a second contract veteran QB is not a fixable issue.

* PFF and NFL NGS agree on charging 3/5 of the sacks to Jones and 2/5 to the OL and the eye test agrees that whilst the OL was not perfect by any means ** it was much improved

** the pressure where Runyan abandons his gap (to set Van Ginkel free on the loop) in the mistaken belief that Thomas would need help when he already had his hands on the Edge should be an easily teachable moment

The personnel usage (and non usage) and lack of quality depth on the DL contributed to our problems.

Johnson has done nothing to be TE1 and his inability to block limits the run game. Hyatt and Tracy cannot make or threaten splash plays, something Daboll says he values, sat on the bench. Phillips cannot make plays sat on the bench watching Flott get beaten and he seemed fit when out there. We have 5 DT on the roster but only Dex is a factor on the field.

Burns/Thibodeaux may not have been helped by the scheme and Minny's quick hit pass game but they have to own their own non-performance just as much as DJ does. It is not all on the coaches.

Good coaches use the attributes that players possess and work to hide their deficiencies. Andy Reid would have Hyatt running early days Tyreek Hill routes and even DJ might hit him occasionally. If Daboll cannot see what he has then he is not the offensive genius he was claimed to be.

To a point I made earlier in this thread:

1. Nabers did help Jones as he was the only WR who ever found space (needs to cut out the drops)
2. It seems that he will need to be peak Jerry Rice, Randy Moss and Terrell Owens combined to help Jones enough to make him OK

Big Blue Huddle / Re: When to bench DJ?

If we keep playing him he will only get hurt and trigger his injury guarantee. Have him inactive, activate De Vito game days. Give Lock first go. Honestly the fewer games we win the better given we need to acquire a new QB next offseason. If Bowen, Burns, Thibodeaux can get their collective act together at least the D might round itself into shape over the season and give us something palatable to watch.

Just bench him and be done with it. Let us see if Lock or De Vito can do a job.
