What are we watching these days?

OK, I guess this is movie month. Last night we watched 'Wonka' a new version of the old Willie Wonka movies. I should say we tried to watch it. I left after about 30 minutes, my wife stuck it out for another 20 minutes so that is that. Maybe I'm just not 9 years old because that is who this movie seems to be aiming at. I won't go into any detail except let's just say this isn't my type of movie.

Just watched Road House with Jake Gyllenhaal. I enjoyed it. I'm guessing most people will compare it to the Patrick Swayze one and can make several comparisons with the two. Basically the same story line but enough differences to hold your attention.

I'm finding myself liking Jake Gyllenhaal more and more.

I watched "Poor Things" on Hulu last night, starring Emma Stone. Weird is an understatement - creepy might be a better definition. Black and white film (for the first part, as they pulled a Wizard of Oz color switch later into the movie). Basically a new version of Frankenstein mixed in with a healthy dose of,"The Island of Dr. Moreau" (putting human minds in animals and experimenting with crossing animals) and a whole lot of porn...including full-frontal nudity and lots of explicit sexual acts that were more graphic than I expected - or cared to see. I'll say this much, Emma Stone is quite a good actress, and she went all in, for her performance. To call her "daring" doesn't begin to define her carefree attitude with nudity, masturbation, straight sex, lesbian sex, etc, on the big screen

Synopsis: Mid-20's age girl (Emma Stone as Bella Baxter), who has been returned to life by swapping out her brain with a baby's brain (her own baby as she was 9 moths pregnant, who didn't die with her). So she has to learn everything a baby does, only in an adult body. After running away and going to Lisbon, France, and back to London, she has pretty much figured out life and how to live as an adult...that is, once she gets over her obsessive interest in her sexuality that she discovers quite by accident. Like a kid who has found his favorite toy that he didn't know existed

I would not suggest it unless you're into heavy erotica mixed with Frankenstein. I was going to give up on it after 10 minutes, but then had nothing else to watch or do, so I ended up watching the whole thing. The fact that I'm still thinking about it this morning tells me it was a disturbing movie I won't forget...even if I want to, LOL. The ending was great and therefore, worth it I guess. Critics loved it and Emma won an Oscar for her performance, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Most flicks that get rave reviews in Hollywood are rarely bearable to watch - unless, of course, you are entirely into analyzing acting performances

Just a heads-up should you give this movie a shot. The funny thing about "Poor Things", when polled to people who had to rate it 1 through 5, it was all 1's or 5's, with 5 wining out about 53-47 over the 1's. It's a love it or hate with nothing really in between

One guy who watched it said he loved it so much he now claims it as his favorite movie of all time. On the other hand, he also said he likes "weird, dark comedy-dramas" and prior to this movie, his favorite of all time was "A Clockwork Orange", which lets off the same kind of vibe IMO

I would not suggest it unless you're into heavy erotica mixed with Frankenstein. I was going to give up on it after 10 minutes, but then had nothing else to watch or do, so I ended up watching the whole thing.

That's been done before, kind of, and in 3-D. 1973 Andy Warhol's Frankenstein was both gory and erotic....and gross.

I know you probably missed it but I watched Poor Things about a month ago and wrote a detailed review also (Post 998). Funny we sort of both came away with similar thoughts.

I did miss it Lenn, so I went back about 5 pages and found it. Your take is pretty much my take on it. I tend to think this movie will become a classic down the road

Best line in the movie (after discovering sex and opting to work in a brothel): "You mean I get to have sex and get paid? What a perfect job!"...LOL (not exact words, but you get the drift)

I have been watching Doc Martin on Acorn TV.  It's a relaxed, enjoyable show about a brilliant but socially awkward doctor who had to end his career as a hot London surgeon because of a sudden blood phobia.   Well written and acted, and it's enjoyable to watch his interactions with the colorful characters who inhabit the small fishing village he is now practicing general medicine in.

Acorn is pretty cheap, you could probably watch the entire last season via the free 7 day trial (if you subscribe via Amazon).

I have quite a few "Doc Martin" episodes on the DVR, I just need to sit down and watch them. My sister turned me on to it, she loves it.

Bill mentioned this yesterday on the main forum.  From what I understand, this is sort of TV piracy for dummies.  The Superbox is essentially an overpriced android device that comes preloaded with what they call an unverified streaming service (a nice name, for they don't know if the programs are properly licensed).

The only real risk would be if the company gets sued and goes out of business (plus the sellers of the product face some risk, so they tend to be on the sleazy side).

You can actually download similar software to your computer or, say, a firestick that would do the same thing.

When I saw your post about Doc Martin I thought I would see if it was available on  the superbox and wallah there it was. I find the video on demand function is awesome. I do search for things that it won't find but that is very rare.
