Remember the last game of the 2018 Season? We froze our asses off.

That was the coldest I have ever been in my life.  There is a thread on the Front Porch that talks about "what you can never have enough of," and for me, that's cold weather gear.   Yet we spent from 9 in the morning to after 4 in the afternoon outside in temps in the single digits to low teens (with win chills below zero).

It didn't matter how many layers (or how good those layers were) you had on; that long outside, the cold just soaked through the layers. The winds made the fire pit all but useless.

The night before I bought heavy boots that had a heavy sock lining with thick soles and heals. Couldn't drive with them they were so big. But they kept my feet warm. The only part of my body that wasn't cold. I remember you both had freezing feet that day.

Gonna be a horrible weekend...weather-wise  :boooo:

"The National Weather Service has already begun issuing severe weather alerts for a massive winter storm expected to roll across the country this week and slam Upstate New York just before Christmas.

The 'incredibly powerful storm' could bring 65 mph winds and icy roads.... 'One could certainly describe this storm system as a once in a generation type of event,' said the weather service

The storm starts off mostly as rain Thursday, and then rapidly falling temperatures late Friday could coat streets and trees with a layer of dangerous ice. Driving will be extremely hazardous. High winds are also likely, which could cause power outages...and wind chills could drop to 20 below zero
" Syracuse Post Standard

Up here in Maine the weatherman is calling for heavy rain and high winds gusting to 65 - 70mph. I don't mind getting rain rather than snow but the winds will cause a lot of power outages. Last weekend we were out of power for 56 hours.

I regret not wearing my big boots.  I was able to add my squad turnout pants to keep my legs warming, but even with two layers of quality socks and isolated regular boots my feet did get cold

I hate wind more than any weather abnormality. Snow without wind is nice. I love a nice rainy day with no wind...dittos with a sunny clear day. Wind can turn any day into a mess...especially once it gets past the dreaded 30 MPH turning point

The worst weather I ever suffered through at a game was at a Bills' / Cowboys' game in Orchard Park back in the 80's. Started out about 35 degrees with a steady, windy, hard rain that completely soaked my clothes all the way through to my flesh. Then in the first quarter, temperature started to drop fast, the wind picked up even worse, and it started to sleet. By halftime, the wind was awful and getting brutal, snowing hard (not soft snowflakes, but biting, sticking snow) and the temperatures dropped significantly. I froze my ass off and my wife was angry with me for taking her to the game (she was a Bills' fan...still is). By the end of the game, I no longer cared about the game, only getting somewhere warm and thawing out. BTW, the Bills blew out the Boys in that game...the only caveat

I got a new furnace.   I have a gas furnace, and the old one didn't need electricity (some sort of thermal couple-driven micro voltage control.   The new one does.   I bought a switch so I could plug the furnace into my generator, but the way they wired in the new furnace makes it very difficult to wire in the interrupter switch I bought.   Instead of a proper junction box (where I could have easily put the switch), they went right from armored cable to conduit.   I am still trying to figure out what would be the easiest approach.

Seriously though, I LOVE the cold weather.  it can't get cold enough for me. Granted I don't spend all day outside. It's the ice that I hate now.

In my younger days, I was an apprentice carpenter, our crew used to work on some of the really tall hi-rises in Manhatten. Many times we worked on buildings that had no walls so the wind was always fierce. On really cold days, there was just no way you could stay warm, no matter how many clothes you had on. There were days we used to just huddle around a fire in a trash can, and spend most of the day hiding behind pillars to try and avoid the wind.
That was cold.

Did you ever do a DNA test? You might have Native American Blood in you. They used to work on bridges and High Rise because they had no fear of heights.

When I say we worked on hi-rises, we had complete floors under us. I HATE heights and was never, ever comfortable going near the edges of buildings. When we worked on buildings with no outside walls, they always had these cables that MIGHT prevent one from falling but I rarely ever went near them,  especially to look down.

But maybe I should get that test. I always rooted for the Indians against John Wayne in all those old westerns.

My father was in the Air Force when I was born, and he was stationed outside of Death Valley, CA.  So I was a desert baby who loves the heat and feels the same way as @ps11yat14 about winter.

Still, they say that the best way to beat things like seasonal affective disorder is to do what they do in Scandinavia (which has a very low SAD occurrence despite the harsh winters) go outside.  As they like to say, "there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad dressing"

Although after that game with Ed and Brian I don't know if I still agree

I've always said that if you live in the north, learn to ski, ice skate, get a snowmobile, etc., and make it so much fun that you look forward to it. I knew a woman who lived in Florida, but moved to Upstate New York for the winter so she could ski every day. And she was 80 yrs old. She's also an anomaly....about 8 deviations from the mean in the normal distribution curve, lol

I've always heard that as you age, you get less tolerant of cold and heat...and kids, and noise, and news, etc. I haven't gotten there yet, but I am getting more and more tired of the cold. And because of my extremely fair skin, I do worse in hot weather and lots of sun so I have no place of refuge for my skin  ~X(

You haters need to move to Phoenix where it is 115, but you aren't hot because it is dry.   /sarcasm/  /sarcasm/  /sarcasm/  /sarcasm/

We were in Flagstaff AZ many years ago, in August. Listening to the weather reports for Phoenix then, the 7-day forecast was 112, 114, 110 then a cool wave came in and it was 105, but then back to 114 etc. etc. I told my wife if I died never ever bury me in Phoenix.

But it's dry they all say.

Strange indeed. Everything is about to go to hell later this afternoon though when the temp drops 35 degrees or so (in record time) and the wind will be much more than just "harsh". I'm doing my running this morning because I don't see a good chance to get out of the house until after Christmas. Dropping my gifts off to my kids this morning because unlike most Christmas mornings, I won't be traveling to their homes :(

I live in a very rural setting within a triangle made up of Binghamton, Ithaca, and Syracuse. I call it "God's Country". 25 minutes to Binghamton, 40 minutes to Syracuse, 20 minutes to Ithaca (the city I rarely go to because it's a freakin mess to get around. Spend most my "outa-house" time in Binghamton, but lately more time than usual in Syracuse. I am also 10 miles north of a very distinct "snow belt" delineation line. I can get 2' of snow and cross that line and find little to no snow...although, the last couple of years the snow storms have been more south than usual. I think Binghamton won the annual "Snow Ball Award" (city that gets the most snowfall) last year which usually goes to Buffalo

Not really - that's an hour and a half drive for me. I live very near Greek Peak and Adventure Park and Hope Lake Lodge (all parts of Greek Peak), a popular ski resort around this part of the country. It has skiing (alpine and cross country), zip lines, mountain coasters, bike trails, a water park, etc. Here's a collage of pictures if you never heard of it...the grand tour

I'm glad I got my running over with this morning. No sooner did I get home and the rain turned to sleet, and the wind is blowing it almost horizontal. The drive this morning was quiet with a soft rain with zero wind, so not too bad. Flashing signs all over route 81 announcing a truck ban. No trucks allowed on the highway except snowplows and emergency vehicles. They've salted the roads to the max, even though it just started to get down to 32 degrees. I put on my relaxing clothes, turned up the thermostat and getting ready to weather the storm for the next couple of days. Hopefully, we don't lose electricity. That would suck  >:( 2

I used to ski Whiteface (for which we call "IceFace") in the Adirondacks once a year and learned how to stay warm...or die! I invested in expensive ($100+) Polertec long johns and another 100 on a long sleeve Polertec undershirt with thumb holes and very good ski socks. From there, nylon bib overalls (that wind cannot cut through), Polertec fleece sweater, high-end Spider ski coat, 1-piece Polertec neck, face, and head cover so the nothing shows but your eyes. Add ski goggles, helmet, and ski gloves and you're good to go. Key is to not let a single piece of flesh be exposed and invest in excellent Polertec...and keep moving and take breaks inside every couple of hours when it's 20 degrees below zero

The downside to the Polertec underwear is if you have a girlfriend, she discovers it and thinks it's the greatest sleepwear ever and when you break up, you discover she took it with her - I've lost two pairs due to that little problem  >:( 2

I have always preferred weather that is a little colder than I'd like to weather that is a little hotter (especially if muggy) than I'd like.

Not that I want it to be 9 degrees fahrenheit, but you get what I'm saying.

I'm the opposite. For me, there's nothing fun to do to get comfortable or relax when it's cold like this. But when it's hot, there's all kinds of water activities or walking through a nice park or forest, have a picnic, etc. Extreme cold tends to shut everything down.

QuoteBrutal winter storm conditions that continued to batter most of the United States brought one of the cities most accustomed to snow — Buffalo — to a standstill overnight and into Saturday, with hundreds of people stuck in vehicles in the frigid cold and drifting snow, and no way for rescue workers to reach them.

EDIT

In Buffalo, though, thousands were expected to be without power or heat overnight into Sunday. AccuWeather meteorologist Jake Sojda predicted that Buffalo would get 4 to 6 feet of snow by Sunday, coupled with wind gusts approaching hurricane force of 74 miles per hour or more. Erie County said Saturday that emergency response was not available in about two-thirds of the blizzard-affected area. Emergency vehicles themselves were stuck in the snow. "It's not something we're proud of," Poloncarz said.

He warned people not to call 911 or an emergency storm number unless they had life-threatening crises. Abandoned vehicles were causing additional problems, and there were concerns that snow-clogged exhaust vents were causing carbon monoxide or natural gas exhaust to back up into homes.

EDIT

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, who said his home had been without power since Friday night, told CNN that 65 stranded motorists had been rescued and another 200 had been reported. With many emergency vehicles unable to reach snowed-in areas, the city has partnered with a snowmobile club to facilitate rescues. "We've had police officers and four-wheel-drive vehicles get stuck," Brown said. "Firetrucks get stuck. In some cases, we've seen plows get stuck." With trees and power lines down and snow clogging many streets, it has been difficult for utility crews to restore power to the more than 20,000 homes without it, the mayor said. Among those needing assistance are people who rely on ventilators and oxygen.

Buffalo is famous for snowstorms, but this one takes the cake. They already had a massive storm a couple of weeks ago when they got 6+ feet of snow and now this. Not good!
