Title: SI Article: 4 Players Who Will be Gone - Others questionable
Post by: Jolly Blue Giant on January 09, 2024, 11:46:11 AM
This according to Sports Illustrated Fansided

1) Darnay Holmes, his contract is up and he hasn't proven to become a starter...and there are just too many better options on the team already - especially the emergence of Flott ["The Giants were hoping that Holmes could become a solid slot corner for a defense that needed it, yet in every opportunity he was given, he let the team down. It's unfortunate, because there really were a few moments in which Holmes looked like he could have been a real contributor..."]

2) Mark Glowinski, he hasn't played up to his previous status and it will save the team 5.4 million to cut him ["Through two seasons and 21 starts with New York, Glowinski allowed 52 pressures and 11 sacks. Interestingly enough, Glowinski also ranked top five in sacks allowed at his position in both seasons, which is insane considering he started just five games in 2023"]

3) Justin Pugh, at 33 yrs old, he just wasn't the player he was in his youth ["Pugh hardly looked like an NFL-caliber lineman, let alone a starting one. With how many offensive line issues the Giants have, Schoen can't afford to waste the money and roster spot on a player like Pugh, regardless of the locker room presence he may be..."]

4) Sterling Shepard, sad, but it's time ["Shepard is a player who will be missed greatly. He is the embodiment of what it means to be a New York Giant. Regardless of quarterback, record, or injury, it didn't matter, Shepard showed up, worked his tail off and never complained about the things around him. He was truly built for the New York spotlight and if not for injuries, he could have had a much more memorable career.

For the die-hard Giants fans, he'll always be remembered by what he meant to the team. What he brought both on the field and off will be nearly impossible to replace, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors...
"]

Other players chances of being gone:

Saquon Barkley
50:50
Adoree Jackson 50:50 [depends on what he'd take to stay...he won't make as much as if he leaves]
Tyrod Taylor 65:35 [this will come down to cost and Daboll's belief in DeVito]
Xavier McKinney ? (was his problem with Wink, or something else?)
Isaiah Simmons ? (did he show enough?)
Azeez Ojulari 40:60 (probably has a lot to do with what he expects to get paid...Giants will low-ball an offer)
Jihad Ward ? (good buddy with Wink and was well-liked by players...probably gone since he was Wink's guy)
Parris Campbell ? (never seemed to pan out...don't know what went wrong)

Agree with the 5 stated are gone.  For the maybes:  Barkley, McKinney, Simmons stay.  Jackson probably gone.  Taylore gone. Ojulari is another in the long line of day 2 pick failures, Ward?  eh, for cheap maybe.  Campbell? forgot he was on the team.  he was a waste

I hope they are able to upgrade at guard enough that Pugh and Glowinski will be gone.  I don't expect Jackson or Ward back.

I think Barkley is gone this year especially after his "exit interview" comments.

Schoen has shown that like most other GMs he doesn't like going into the draft with a glaring need at a position.  Not sure if some of these guys might get a 1 year deal to prevent that.

I'd love to hang on to Tyrod, Simmons, and McKinney.  The rest, not so much.  I am 50-50 on Barkley.  If he can sign a reasonable, low cap hit deal (which wouldn't be the franchise tag), I want him back.  Mostly because it's not clear at all that we "hit" on Gray in the mid rounds, so if Barkley walks that's a glaring need to fill.

I wonder what Barkley will command in the open market in this offseason.

Other than Barkley, take a look at the running backs we've drafted since Ahmad Bradshaw. It ain't pretty. David Wilson probably being the best had to retire early due to health, and he was really more of a third down specialist by skillset.

Hard to know. But he must be well aware that Zeke Elliott was passed on by most teams and finally settled for a 1-year, 3 million dollar contract with the Pats. Of course, Zeke should be well off if he invested the money he got from the Cowboys...and that's questionable. SB has most likely invested well...although, he did invest heavily in crypto, so who knows. Unlike Zeke, SB can probably make a lot of money in promotions, advertising and perhaps in broadcasting someday...especially in NYC where he is idolized by many. And he has mentioned more than once that he wanted to be a Giant for life  :-??

Azeez Ojulari has another year on his contract.
Why does anyone think he will be cut with a salary of $2.1 million?

A lot less than a second franchise tag, IMO.  He should be begging to get tagged again.

It's not as easy as some folks on here would have you believe.  Just grab a random RB in rounds 4-6 and you're golden....  not quite.

Because he's constantly injured and a waste of a roster spot?

True, but you will also notice that RBs tend to excel behind a great line...something we haven't had in a long, long time. A team can get by with "running back by committee" when they have a line that makes holes big enough for my mother to get 3-yards. How many times have we seen Barkley creamed behind the line of scrimmage. It's like the QB is about to get sacked hard, so he hands the ball to Saquon and say, "here, you take the hit"...LOL. The offensive line is offensive to me

We should have trade value if Schoen wants to move on.

What kind of trade value do you expect for someone who's missed more than 30% of games over their career due to injury and is in the last year of his contract?

Not sure they'd get more than a conditional 7th rounder.

I think this is in response to the original post which suggested that Ojulari chances of staying are dependent on what he thinks he should be paid and Giants making a low ball offer.  2024 is the last year of his rookie contract

And a savings of about $1.6MM if they cut him.

I would also put Cordell Flott $933K savings with $496k dead money. Aaron Robinson $1.3MM savings with $275K dead money. And, Carlos Basham Jr, $1.4MM savings with no dead money, as likely cuts.

Plus, I can't see them hitting the ejector button after just 2 seasons

I would let Tyrod walk IF we can get Gardner Minshew. He will be a FA after the season AND is younger than Taylor. We could build our team and have him place hold until we get our QB

He's going to be sort of playing next season for the Giants.
The injuries are crazy with him along a few other players but the money he is owed is minor for the few games he will play average at a position the team is lacking.

Flott is going to be on the team next season and possibly the starting slot CB.
Your take on this makes no sense but who knows we will see come September later this year.

They are not giving up on Flott a 2022 draft pick making under a Million who played a significant role on D!  =))

Flott is not good and terrible against the run.  If he is anything but depth and I mean the 2nd-3rd guy off the bench, it is not a good sign.

Two players: Cam Brown and Carter Coughlin announced this morning on social media that they are not returning to the Giants. Doesn't say whether they were told they were cut or that they decided to search for a new home as their own decision

Aren't there contracts up?  Perhaps the team told them they will not be offering them a contract.
