Very, very strong words. And Carl is spot on. A QB has to be able to read zone coverage (every type) in less than a couple of seconds, and he better know how to exploit it. That's why it's important for GMs/HCs to interview them with a white board and dry marker. That should sift through the static to see who has a mind necessary to carry a team. They ALL can throw the ball, and most can scoot, but it's the mental part that separates the men from the boys...the wheat from the chaff
Jesse Minter's defense was 100% NFL but more importantly it was his unique coverage schemes he used and which JJ practiced against every practice that has JJ most ready in my opinion. JJ even said that practicing against a Minter D then talking with Harbaugh about it is where he feels like he received a unique QB education.
Minter emphasized coverage over pressure. Minter's concept was to create passive pressure — to create false movements early to set up a D one way to have a QB read that then change completely after the ball was hiked using MTM and zone mesh concepts and over rotations which forces a QB to make a bad read. JJ practiced against that every week.
Remember even Nick Saban said Minter's coverages were things he has never seen before. Big words from a legend.
