Title: Let's hope PFF grades are meaningless

Because if they are a decent guide, then I'm not seeing why Runyan will be an upgrade to Glowinski when I look at the last handful of years for each player.

DB: Factoring in the age difference is the "improvement" (even if PFF grades are meaningful/important. Bob

If you look at overall grades, yes (although there is the age issue with Runyan turning 27 and Glowinski being 32).

I think if you drill down, you will see Runyan is the better pass blocker while Glowinski is the better run blocker.  In a passing league, I will take the pass blocker

As Rich mentioned, the pass blocking grade.

My take away from the offseason OL signings was that they pretty much all graded better as pass blockers than run blockers.

Feel it would be an improvement if all the OL did the same thing well.

Still, it's hard to feel great about this.

Did we get a legitimately good player here, or did we overpay for a mediocre guy because he was the best guy we could possibly get and we were desperate?

If it's the latter, that's literally exactly what we did with Solder. Admittedly the stakes were higher with that signing, but it was the same type of idea.

Let's also hope the fact that a smart, consistently successful team like the Packers that knows a lot about quality O line play let this guy walk doesn't mean anything, and they actually made a mistake and let a quality player fall into another team's clutches.

Apparently Runyan played hurt with a variety of nagging injuries last year.

Sounds like a perfect fit for our elite, cutting edge training and medical staff.

PFF is a money grab. Until they disclose their exact metrics and evaluators then it's more or less a hack to me.

As an fyi, anyone can become an evaluator.

@uconngiant

The ad says "suitable candidates."

How is that saying they would take anyone?

I did some research on this. They want people to watch film and document where a player is positioned on Offense and Defense. It's an entry level position and if successful the person can work their way up to more important roles. Years ago it wasn't a paid position.

I am currently reading a book about NFL scouting.  One of the interesting aspects is that many NFL teams frown on new scouting intern hires having scouting training or experience.   Many teams prefer blank slates where they can teach the person how to scout (in their preferred manner).
