Title: City/Country you have no desire to visit?
Post by: squibber on January 25, 2025, 03:14:26 PM
For me, Dubai. It has a dark underbelly.

I heard when they built the new soccer stadium, they brought in foreign workers to help build it. When they got to Dubai their passports were taken away and they were forced to work for nothing.

If a Dubai citizen is of a certain blood line, they get a free college education and free health insurance. If you're not one of those 15% you're out of luck.

If you lose your job, you have one week to leave Dubai.

If you are a foreign worker in Dubai and you retire, you have one week to leave Dubai.

As a kid, I always wanted to go to Rio for the beautiful women. Now, not a chance. Same for Colombia.

As a man who wanted to "see the world", and then ended up traveling the world, I never got to Alaska. Maybe it's because I'm sick of snow and cold, and I no longer ski...but I have zero interest in ever visiting Alaska. I'm sure it's beautiful and the people are probably nice, but I have no interest. Dittos with Hawaii for different reasons...too commercialized and requires a long flight

I could go on...no interest in ever visiting Cuba, or Venezuela, or Iraq, or Iran, or Afghanistan...etc

My wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson are planning a trip to Hawaii next year. I told them I had no desire to go there for the reasons you mentioned. I'll stay home a take care of the cats. There are very few places i desire to go visit. Just to old to deal with the stuff that goes with traveling.

I'm not listing obvious places like Yemen, Afghanistan, Venezuela, North Korea, etc.

In terms of places that westerners actually visit that I have no real desire to go to, Australia comes to mind. I'm sure if we went there we'd find lots of things we'd love to see and I'm certainly not suggesting it would not be an interesting and, in some areas, beautiful place to visit. But to get there would be a massive hassle, not to mention expensive, and there are just too many other places that are less far away that we have not explored yet that we would like to go before we considered Australia. I doubt we'll ever make it there, and I'm perfectly fine with that.

I have had the good fortune to have traveled a good part of the world. Traveling is our passion and I would love to see many of the places I can only dream about.
I have been to Alaska 3 times and I respect if you don't want to go, but the main tourist season is June thru September and it may be colder where you are now than in Alaska. The only time you may get cold is when you travel to a glacier. And it truly is "the last frontier".
We have never been to Australia or New Zealand and if not for that long flight we would go in a heartbeat.
We also have family in Cape Town and haven't gone for that same reason, that plane ride, but maybe one day.
As for the question asked, I have absolutely no desire to go to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and any other country around there. I know many Vietnam veterans who went back and.loved it. Not me. I saw it briefly in 1969 and just have to many bad memories of
people who never came home from there.
I have traveled thru a good part of the USA also and I have no desire to visit Phoenix in July or August. I start sweating just thinking about 115 for 3 months in a row.

Edison, New Jersey. Haha just kidding Ed.

I would include Ireland and England. Too much rain and cloudy days. Ireland only gets 1400 hours of sun per year

For sure I am not criticizing anyone for not wanting to visit certain countries or places but you can't just use a negative against so many positives.
Squib you say Ireland would be too depressing for lack of sunshine. Maybe do but look at all the truly amazing things you can see and do there, things you can't do anywhere else in the world.
Not wanting to experience Hawaii, maybe heaven on earth is truly baffling. The beauty, the people, the food and then there is Pearl Harbor, a must see for all Americans. Not to even wanting to visit here is a huge mistake, but to each their own.

And you would need a special covering for your junk or it could become frostbitten. No lie.
