Title: NFT: Is anyone else purposely steering clear of the news?
Post by: andrew_nyGiants on March 14, 2025, 05:34:59 PM
Mods,
If I'm breaking any rules, feel free to delete.

My intention is not to burden anyone with my political views. I'm just curious to read if anyone else is wondering where we're living these days.

I am growing more depressed by the day, and find myself burying in my work, posting here (Thank you, Rich) and taking my dog out on a lot of walks.

Anything I can do to avoid the news and I mean ALL NEWS (FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN)

I am growing more disgusted by the day!

Andrew - You ask a great question and it is something I have had to consider as well.  Two months ago my wife and I moved to Colombia so we could be closer to her family.  She's lived for more than 25 years away from them and I thought it was time she be closer.  The one thing great about living overseas is that you don't walk streets or sit in restaurants and hear about U.S. politics.  I know that is something you cannot do living there.

Here is something that I also do.  I have basically stopped reading U.S. news sources such as CNN, Fox, etc.  because they all generate a level of bias or unreporting that does not appeal to me.  I did some research on news source bias and the two news sources generally considered to me more in the middle are the BBC News and Reuters.  Now, I've chosen to read news from the BBC.com.  I find them to be much more center aligned and frankly just report news.  I read the news in the morning to catch up on any overnight events.  At night, I read the news to catch up on the day's events.  I do not read the news during the day anymore.  It becomes too depressing.

You are also probably down because the financial markets are down since President Trump took office.  Nothing makes a person sadder than watching their hard earned invested money decline.  The tariff wars are going to be here for a while.  If the market volatility is really bothering you, maybe liquidate and sit in a cash position or invest it in fixed income investments for 3-12 months.  That may give you some peace.

Lastly, this whole Giants QB issue is something that can drive us all mad.  Just make peace that if they don't get a QB in FA, they are sure to land one in the draft.  At that point as fans, all we can do is cheer for success.

Hope this helps,

Joseph

I can fully understand why any reasonable person would want to just shun the news these days. It's exhausting, it's repetitive, and it can be infuriating. A lot of times when I read a few articles about a subject I end up bewildered and, not infrequently, angry or a bit depressed.

Still, I can't say I shun the news though, as I like being informed, even when it's unpleasant. I am cognizant that life is short though, so it's some good food for thought.

I shun the news but my 401k and retirement fund definitely lets me know about it.  I like being down 30% on the year.  It's great

I really don't 'shun' the news but I just don't want to get my info from just one or tow sources. I read my morning paper from cover to cover every day, I read up on things on the internet, especially stories that I find harder to believe. I do try and search out some truths.
What bothers me the most are the people that do just get wantever neews they want just from one place that is or may be so one sided they just do not even want to believe there could be another side. I think that alone is what makes people feel one way or another. We get so aggravated when friends say that they saw this on say FOX Entertainment and everything else is just faked.
Are people so stupid they just follow along as sheep.

Yes, the news is depressing and it sure doesn't look like it will get better for quite a while, maybe 4 years from now. But I chug along and I watch and listen, really trying to understand how some people can think a certain way without seeing the big picture.

OK that's me.

I've pretty much stopped watching the news, as well as partaking in any online or in person participation of current events. Local news is the exception, as I do keep informed of my general surroundings. At a recent dr appointment my blood pressure was measured at 91/67, when normally it's 125/85. I'm not positive my drop in bp is related to no longer being stressed about current events, but on the other hand I'm not positive there's no relation either.

I have recently learned to use X as a source of news by carefully examining and researching things. What I was surprised to find is there are many independent very young journalists who I didn't even realize existed - and I now enjoy comparing them to what corporate media is telling me.

You might think that I'm crazy but I've read or am currently reading several books by a young Irish author named Sally Rooney. I'm now on my third one over the last few weeks. She is a novelist in the generation of my 3 sons who are in their 30's and 40's. A common theme in the books is how frustrated and depressed that generation is. Our generation has made them this way. Great reads and well recommended.

Thanks everyone for your reply, I was beginning to question my reaction to whats going on out there. I appreciate you sharing your perspective. It's nice that we can share our feelings about tough or sensitive topics while being there to support one another.

It restores my faith in humanity during a time when that very thing can get lost.

Thank you again and again!

By the way, I kept a few major history books that I have wanted to read.  Just finished my first on the Civil War and Reconstruction.  Bury your head in books.

Very true Joseph.

The David McCullough bio of Harry Truman is next on my list of books to tackle. It's long but supposed to be one of the better presidential biographies ever.

So much illegal and damaging activity happening at the same time...subterfuge?!

I honestly never believed that our country would devolve into this  :(

Kind of like another country around 1940, where they rounded up people they didn't like and herded them off to some place, and were never heard from again.

Can someone please explain to me how this country is turning into Putin's Russia or, worse, Hitler's Germany?
We have leaders who are using their position to retaliate against anyone and everyone who might have looked at them wrong. They have taken away clearances from law firms that might have done work against them, and they have dismantled any agency that might stand against what they are doing. They're looking to annex land that isn't theirs, but they say, Hey, we need it. I guess I could go on for hours, but the point is, some one please explain to me how is this good for American, democracy and we are not turning into another Russia or God forbid, Nazi
Germany. It sure looks that way to me.

@LennG As a fellow veteran, I share a lot of your frustrations. I think the answers will veer into political territory and probably should be tabled.
