It sounds nice on paper, but chances are high Russ will start.

I appreciate them still looking to the draft. Having someone in the wings developing on the side, allows them to not be desperate or as hungry next draft, if the vets add enough juice for them to stay the course. I guess Jameis would be here in 2026 also.

I agree, Russell is the odds-on favorite.  However, one thing I have heard whispers of was that Russell Wilson and the Steeler's OC, Author Smith, didn't always see eye to eye.  I would imagine there would be a strong incentive for Russell to play ball with the Giants coaching staff, with Winston waiting in the wings, eager for his own reclamation story.

Arthur Smith is not a great OC for QBs imo, no surprise there. Hopefully our system, with a more dynamic #1 works out better for him.

Did anyone else report this?

So far, this is the only report, although Breer is a pretty reliable source.

Russ is going to start Week 1 if healthy.  He doesn't sign with the Giants if that wasn't made clear.  They can pretend this is an open competition but it won't be.  And it CERTAINLY won't be a rookie with those two vets backing him up.  That's crazy talk.  If they did have a competition and Winston won it (he's got a shot) Wilson would not be a happy camper.  So no, Wilson will start until he's hurt or ineffective.  At that point we'll see.

It might be worth noting that it appears the Steelers had no interesting in re-signing Wilson.  Perhaps the Browns had interest, but they let him walk after his visit and I didn't see a report of an offer.

This means the Giants were Wilson's best chance to start.  I don't see how Wilson had the sort of leverage to demand a guaranteed starter position.

I appreciate that, on paper, Wilson should be the favorite to win the starter job, but I don't think the Giants will be handing it to him.

I don't think they entertain signing him if they weren't certain he'd start.  Maybe making demands is a step too far but there's an understanding here.  Because if they were comfortable with Jameis that money could have been better spent on a RG and they could have drafted a guy be it in the early or late 1st round.  To me it doesn't make sense, and that is before you get into the drama of Wilson not being happy if he's a backup.  We will find out the actual plan in training camp but I would be stunned if Wilson is a healthy backup Week 1.

Are there any similarities between the offenses run under Pete Carroll, and Daboll?
