Majors has been lauded as a technician with an off-the-charts football IQ. Majors's NFL draft profile, written by Lance Zierlein, cites an unnamed AFC national scout who says Majors can "make protection adjustments on the fly like an NFL veteran."
The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Majors, who played all his college snaps at center, finished his five-year career for the Longhorns, where he achieved a 98.5 pass-blocking efficiency rating. He has allowed just three sacks in his career and zero sacks surrendered in his last two seasons.
The Giants interest in Majors, who projected as a Day 3 prospect, is interesting because just two years ago, they selected John Michael Schmitz in the second round to presumably be their long-term starter at center.

I love this. Giants cant hold onto players who dont meet expectations but must look to tell themselves it has not worked out and get an upgrade elsewhere. JMS has under achieved. What we see is what we get.

Rich: IMO they see one (Majors or Schmidt) as playing guard, at least initially if it's Majors). Bob
I'm OK keeping an extra C on the bench, and if JMS struggles continue they can have another option.
They should take a look at Jonah Monheim too, can play T,G, or C

Schmitz is one of the worst starting centers in the league. There wasn't a big jump in his performance from year one to year two. Schoen would be wise to consider that he got it wrong. Center is too important to tolerate having a guy with an abysmal pass blocking grade according to pff. I don't think his awful pass blocking gets better moving from center to guard but IMHO he simply can't stay at center.
If Majors is in the Giants' crosshairs as a Center/Guard draft candidate, he represents what I believe would be filling a need as a potential starter and, at a minimum, quality depth to "fix the offensive line."
One more offensive lineman, preferably a left tackle, plus a Majors, would represent a win-win for the Giants.
Peace!

If my memory serves, JMS was considered a more "finished" product than Tippman was from U-W prior to draft. Jets drafted Tippman before Giants drafted JMS and Tippman has left JMS in his rear view mirror in terms of NFL development.

madb: By what measure(s)do you think he's one of the NFL's worst? Pass pro, run, both, something else? Bob
PFF- 72.7
PB- 85.4
RB- 68.2

His PFF grade overall last year was 61.4 which was 35th best in the league for centers and his pass blocking grade was 50.2, which was 54th out of 64. He stinks.

JMS has really struggled but this C class (including Majors) is flat out awful. It will be converted tackles like Mbow or Zabel who emerge as potential plus NFL starters at C from this draft.

madb: We both know you're correct, but what would his scores have been on a team like the Eagles? There is more to offensive line than PFF scores, especially for offensive linemen, because they must play together as a unit, so fielding a consistent lineup (which the Giants mostly could not do after losing their best guy) is very important. I will say this, though... if the Giants (for example) draft a center and move Schmidt to guard, that would give you a lot more ammunition for your view. Even more ammo would be added if they drafted a center and put him on the bench, so let's see how it works out. So far, I agree he is far from the best center in the league, but IMO he's not a bad as his PFF scores. Bob

I am sick of this narrative that says Giants lose their best guy and OL falls apart. What does that say about the other 4 guys and about the 1 guy needed to replace Thomas? They suck as individuals and as a unit.
Eagles can lose Lane Johnson or Landon Dickerson or anyone else and their unit continues to function at a high level.
JMS is playing his 3rd year in 2025. If he is not a grizzled veteran by now, then he is inept.
If losing Andrew Thomas means we drop dead then is a backup OLT the 2nd most important need on this team behind QB? Or, are we going to delude ourselves into thinking the line is not that bad or that Thomas will play a full season?

Phil: I get what you're saying, but losing even your best guy on a line that is already solid is not the same thing as losing your best guy on an offensive line that is struggling.
[This is just one scenario. There are others.] Why is it not the same? Because a solid OL is not already scheming to protect a weak link. A solid OL has no weak links. So when they lose their best guy, not much changes for the other four OL unless the replacement guy is not as good and needs help on certain plays, in which case another player (sometimes a TE, sometimes someone else) is assigned to help out the new guy on certain types of plays.
On a crappy OL (Giants), the TE and others are already helping certain OLs on certain plays, so losing an a guy (especially the best guy) is almost impossible to address.

Bob - that's my point. If our OL starters cant protect a backup OLT, then we need new starters.
Performance decreasing after losing an all pro, and top 5 guy at any position, should be expected, its common sense.
You cannot expect a backup to be all pro level. And fact is, they lost more than Thomas, several players went down with injuries. It isn't just Thomas, he was far from the only OL to be injured
Hopefully one day Barnes leaves and they revamp the entire staff.
