Title: What Russini is hearing about the nature of this draft
Post by: MightyGiants on April 23, 2025, 08:38:44 AM
"There aren't a lot of Robert De Niros at the top of this draft."

That's how one NFL head coach described the lack of elite talent in this year's draft class — and based on multiple conversations with those in NFL scouting departments, he's not wrong. A current general manager added: "I don't recall seeing a draft that was so light in the first 10 picks."

Many evaluators have shared that some players expected to go in the top 10 are comparable to players who might still be on the board in the 20s. One league source said, "Picks 4, 5, 6 and 7 can get the same player at 20 that they can get at their current slots."

However, there's still legitimate potential — especially for teams looking to fill out their roster with guys who can contribute right away. Another general manager described this draft to his scouts as, "There's not a ton of touchdown makers, star corners or QBs, but it's all about the lines of scrimmage in this draft."

Seems to me to be a no brainer to stick at number 3 and get a true blue chip player.  However, it also leads me to believe a lot of teams will want to move into the top 3 and it depends what type of compensation they pony up.  It would have to be an incredible over-pay.

In the immoral words of Jaime, "Tru dat".

I can see Jerrah in love with RB Jeanty..but Pokes need a WR..trench guys..Stephen runs the show now..Raiders may be movers for him..

For me. to move off Carter indeed would take a haul...huge overpay..but I'd rather they take him .trading down can be precarious as 2021 proved

Yeah, this is where I am with it.

Russini's reporting has always been flat or behind to me.

From a league source just now preparing to make deals during the Draft: "I'd say at this hour there are more teams saying they're willing to move down than up, at this point--starting within the top five. Obviously anything offered has to make sense."

They also had an interesting comment about being  "aware of the GM's that are under public pressure and scrutiny right now. More often than not, those GM's are making moves that think will saved their jobs rather than what's best for the franchise long term. Sometimes those things match up, more often they don't."

we saw this offseason that Schoen did what was best for the franchise and not necessarily what was best for him. With what we had, Schoen could have restructured AT, Lawrence, Burns etc and went all in getting a ton of talent and yet he spent money in a smart way and really I think killed the offseason. He didn't over pay and got quality with a ton of guys at a reasonable price and that rarely happens in FA.

So as much as schoen gets knocked constantly, I think he put the organization before himself and will do so in the draft and should be commended for it because most wouldn't in his place.

So far, I don't think there has been a single move that could be considered a desperation save-my-job type.

Also @MightyGiants have you see the color coded breakdown of the team that nick falato did breaking down the talent on the team? They said it was on BBV but I couldn't find it, but I think it would be a great discussion thread.

Also from her article

Is interior O-line where it's at? Multiple decision-makers and scouts seem to think they can find solid value in centers and guards in this draft — players who can give you close to the same level of production without the big price tag. Because of that, I wouldn't be surprised if some teams double up on those positions. It's a smart way to stretch your cap and still build quality depth.
