Sadly, the fan passed away from his injuries

I heard reports he was drunk.  From the video it looks like he was trying to stand on the railing and that's how he fell

I wouldn't be surprised if the family sues, claiming the stadium was unsafe and that stadiums take measures to make it harder for this sort of thing to happen.   In college, I used to have access to the NYU Library.  It was an impressive structure.  It was 12 stories tall, and the middle was open from the ground floor to the roof, with the books in rooms ringing the large open space.  Over the years, apparently, too many students jumped off the railings, killing themselves, and the schools were forced to change the design and enclose the ringed areas.

In my old man rant, I can't help but feel the newer generations are trying to child-proof the world.   I can remember years ago taking my young nephew to a playground (that was infinitely safer than the ones I used as a kid).  There were two mothers there complaining that the polls that held up the playground structure weren't padded and what would happen if their (dim bulb, my commentary) kids ran into the polls...

I just think that while tragedies are going to happen, we need to have reasonable limits on how much we child-proof the world to try and protect the stupid people from themselves.  I will not step off my old-man rant soapbox.

I just shook my head  :surrender:

Some good news, I may have misread the article (they were referring to another fan dying).

It appears that the latest is he is in critical condition

Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, Wednesday that the man was taken to Allegheny General Hospital by ambulance and was last said to be in critical condition.

At this point I don't really care if this guy had two beers or 20. All that matters is his condition now. If he has a drinking problem and he is able to survive and physically recover from this, he can deal with that later. Sounds like he didn't have much to drink at all, if it was only two beers. I'm actually not even sure why the media is focused on this side of the story. The article barely talks about how he is doing, which is what people should care about.

Do you think the fact that he was underaged might be part of the reason?

If the fact that a 20 year old may have had two beers a handful of months before he was technically of legal age is the bigger story then the precise nature of his condition and chances of survival and recovery, then people are pretty warped.

Jeff,

All appearances this underage young man consumed so much alcohol at a public sporting event that it clouded his judgment to the point that he thought it would be a good idea to try and stand on a railing, risking a fall of over 20 feet.   As a result, he suffered grievous injury.

I tend to think the focus is more on who allowed/supplied him with alcohol and why they allowed him to consume too much.

Frankly, and maybe this is just the grumpy old man in me, I have no use for people who go to sporting events to get drunk.  You want to get drunk?  Go to a bar, or better yet, stay home.  I don't enjoy drunks spilling beer on me at games, I don't enjoy drunken fights, and I certainly don't enjoy these other drunken issues like the topic of this thread.

Rich,

Fair enough.

If it is determined that he was severely intoxicated, then I think that warrants some investigation, though I would still say that if it were several months from now and he happened to have had his 21st birthday already. While I don't care if he was 20 or 21, I agree that for anyone to be completely hammered at a baseball game or any sporting event is not appropriate given these venues are intended to be family environments.
