Confused about the Jones contract. So, Jones is not getting any more money from the Giants? But the Giants have "dead money" against the CAP? Also how much longer? In 2026 are the Giants in the clear?
Daniel Jones still crippling the NY Giants' salary cap one dollar at a time
Daniel Jones just won't let go. He's not on the roster, not in the quarterback room, and not part of the organization. But somehow, he's still dragging the New York Giants down from afar. Cutting him might've ended the on-field chapter, but the financial mess is still very much alive — and it's going to be for a while.
After signing a four-year, $160 million deal back in 2023, he has gone 3-13 as the starter with 10 touchdown passes to 13 interceptions. The contract blew up almost instantly, and even after cutting ties, the damage still lingers.
When the Giants cut Jones, they took on $47.1 million in dead cap in 2024 and another $22.2 million this year. Dead cap space is money that still counts against a team's salary cap for a player who's no longer on the roster, usually due to a trade, release, or retirement. That's money they can't spend. And in a division like the NFC East, any upgrade helps.
Daniel Jones' dead money is eating up Giants' remaining cap space
For a rebuilding and retooling team like the Giants, every dollar counts. The fact that Jones is costing this team so much money in 2025 is a big fat reminder of the misfire that was his contract extension.
Big Blue still managed to land a few offseason pieces, mostly on defense — Paulson Adebo, Jevon Holland, and Chauncey Golston headline that group. They also brought in Russell Wilson as the short-term fix.
It's been pretty good cap gymnastics by Schoen this offseason but with only $3.8 million remaining in effective cap space, having that additional cap space could have helped them bring in some more talent via trade or signing.

What a hyperbolic (to the point that it could be considered clickbait) article. The Giants rank 18th in dead cap money. They are only that high because Darren Waller is contributing another $5 million to the Giants' dead cap total.
Still, DJ's dead cap hit of $22 million is a bit less than 7% of the cap. I can't imagine any reasonable interpretation of the word "crippling" that would include less than 7% cap hit.
Not mentioned in the article is that Schoen has borrowed at least $20 million in future cap dollars to pretty much negate DJ's dead cap hit number for this season.
This is simply a really bad article. In many ways, it's worse than the Pat Leonard article that was roundly criticized because this one actually (intentionally or unintentionally) misleads the reader.
Dreadful contract + Ultimately a dreadful player for the Giants = a dreadful outcome.
Colour me shocked.
Jones on the Giants mostly stank. The stench is thankfully removed next year.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
This is akin to being surprised that Fathers Day will be June 15th. Something that has long been known, just as Daniel Jones' effect on the Giants' CAP has long been known.
Same old whine and cheeze! story cum attention seek in which tries to sneak by the fact that Gettleman/ Mara left Schoen & Co with some $30 millions in cap liability and the yoke of bad luck disguising a bad joke at Quarterback. Given what has happened since in terms of money management and player talent- FA, Trade, Draft- additions, we are being asked to look through the wrong end of the telescope. That only goes to prove that xxxxxxxx doesn't always baffle brains.
Cheers!
Absolute garbage article. 25 million is a barely average defense end these days. That money really doesn't matter. If we want to sign people, we have plenty of resources to push out money. People complain about the cap a lot but it's not an issue. We were two of the top two spending teams in free agency last two year. I don't know wtf kinda article this is.
I get tired of the Daniel Jones talk... he is gone. He is on another team. Best of luck to him. All the media and even the team plays the blame game, but he was not our only problem. They had to sign him after making the playoffs. It was just a perfect series of events that didn't go the teams way. I don't think he was great or anything, but they weren't just letting him walk after drafting him that high and signing Jacoby Brisset/marriotas of the world.
What would have been crippling is if they had done what has become a standard routine starting QB contract. This contract was built with the idea he'd be gone in 2 years because everybody with the exception of Mara knew this guy couldn't play. The truth of the matter is he will cost exactly $0 in 2026 which is when the Giants are planning to actually be good.
Next, this "journalist" will write an article about the Bonilla payments "CRIPPLING" the Mets ability to spend.
Not going to comment, except to say that this is a really tired topic.
And regardless of how anyone feels about it, bitching about it today as if it's some revelation is both lame and dumb.

"Not going to comment"...but then comments /sarcasm/
I posted this, because I was confused.

You might want to check out this site: https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/new-york-giants
Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see the Jones and Waller dead money. Then if you click on the 2026 tab and scroll to the bottom you won't see any further dead money for anyone.
It is reasonable for a fan not to know this, but the author of the article has no business not knowing this or treating it like it is some kind of revelation.
Hope this helps.
Worst QB we ever had besides Dave Brown
Just a boring article. The Giants aren't winning anything this year, even if they had another $100 million. Better to get the dead cap hits gone this year as they develop Dart and hopefully have a shot to do some real damage next year.
Beyond this, the Giants have zero bad contracts still on the books. Zero. You might want to make the case that Burns starting next year is a bad contract because he counts well over thirty million against the cap... but not one bad contract. A few like Evan Neal aren't good, but I think every one expires after this year. Schoen gets a lot of grief, and rightly so for Jones, but the giants have a very healthy salary cap, especially with having a very cheap QB for multiple years if Dart develops.
