Odunze is my favourite WR fit for us as I think he is the highest character/work ethic guy and has a really high floor: good technique, tidy routes/finds space in zones, great hands, great body control/wins contested catches, good speed, great blocker. IMO he is the best complement to what we have where I see some overlap for Nabers with Robinson and Hyatt in terms of best use. I also continue to have reservations about Nabers maturity. Tony Pauline on the recent Giants podcast with Schmeelk only reinforced that concern.

Day two I really like Ricky Pearsall for his hands, ability to find space and body control/contested catches. He's a much better athlete than people expect (this white guy can jump!).

Quote from: Stringer Bell on April 03, 2024, 07:15:07 PMWay too many holes on this team to waste 47 on a RB.

Also way too many holes at 3T and across DB to use top 4 picks on O. The fastest way to become competitive is to have a sound D and solid OL. The Steelers show this over and over. If a QB is there we love take him or a stud WR in R1 and then build the D!

If they really love a top guy then I will get behind them doing what they have to do to get them given how important QB is in NFL. If they do not (or simply cannot get it done) I see no point in taking one just to be seen to be doing something.

I am glad Wink is gone. There is obviously a ton of things for Daboll to improve on but when all is said and done your boss is your boss and Wink had trouble with that. His boundary pushing got handled one way in Baltimore by a very strong, established and respected GM-HC pairing on a perennial winning team. It was more disruptive and difficult for a relatively new HC on a team having a let down season. Time to let go of the past and get behind the present.

Everybody's flavour of the month Texans maybe show us there is more than one path to competitiveness.

They first got competent on D but were held back by sub-standard QB and O playmakers bar one stud WR drafted and a FA RB. Then they got the QB. Now they are building out the pass catchers and pass rush. I suspect they will try to add one or two more DB playmakers in draft.

That is why I want Giants to invest on DT and DB on day 2 and 3 in this draft. Field a solid D first. If a QB we like is there R1 take him. If not, take the stud WR. Accumulate good players and use every option like the Texans did over three FA/draft (incl. this year) cycles.

If we select a QB we need to add a WR and a RB to build out the O room but can do that in R3-6. I think outside CB, S, 3T and NCB are all bigger needs. I hate the outside CB group but I like the NCB and several safeties. The DT class is take high or more of a day 3 project. So, for me improve our DB group day 2/high day 3.

I do not think that any of the defenders carry the kind of grade you would want at 6. In particular I think the best outside CB in this draft is worse than the top 5 last year (the strength is the nickel guys late 1/day 2). It would genuinely be a surprise if they went for a third Edge in R1 who might get 30% snaps,

However, if they are going to reach on D then maybe Byron Murphy II or Jerzhan Newton to partner Dex and give us a potential dominant '4' on passing downs (rotating with Nacho/Davidson on rushing downs). It might seem a bit extreme to use 6 for one of these likely 50/60% snaps guys (at least initially) but building on the one potential dominant area of the team might offer the biggest reward of any pick on D.

I will say that with Rashee Rice the latest player with college issues off field to potentially find trouble again I do think in this WR class we should be more wary of Nabers blemishes than many here seem to be. Reports of him having an 'entourage' on visits/meetings etc. does suggest he is the latest LSU "big personality" WR. In contrast everybody raves about Odunze as a character, person and leader. Harrison has his ultra-professional upbringing and lineage and a profile so low off the field he is nearly invisible.

We are in transition with issues around our HC's demeanour and two established locker room leaders departed. We are not the ideal environment to try to keep someone with any fragilities on the straight and narrow. Our track record with red flag guys like Baker and Toney is also not encouraging. I do not have a red flag on Nabers but he is definitely an amber.  It matters IMO.

So a good thing that if we take one in R1 it will likely be WR 2 or 3?!  =))

FWIW (probably not much) my opinion is that neither Daboll nor Schoen are on the hot seat. I think Mara hates how many coaches he has sanctioned the firing of in recent years.

If we run it back with Jones and he gets injured or under-performs the owner will co-own that decision and give the GM, HC the chance to reboot in 2025.

This only changes IMO if Daboll has a Judge style full meltdown (not a few tantrums, the proper 'lost it totally' we saw with JJ on both match day and in pressers).

If Maye falls to 6 I would be astonished if we did not turn in our card in record time. His high ceiling, low floor, big body, hero ball mentality simply has to remind Daboll and Schoen of Allen. This does not mean he is or will be Allen level in NFL but to me of all the QB in this draft he is the one I think fits our HC most. Of course all the talking him down in the media may be BS and he might well go 2 or 3 with us never having a sniff at him.

Saleh (ageing owner going all in with ageing QB)
McDermott (5-6 playoffs, 1 AFC title game; AFC Mr. Almost)
McCarthy (though he is JJ's xxxx deflector)
Stefanski (tons of resources, 1-2 playoffs in 4 years)
Shanahan (2 SB losses; 2 NFC title losses; NFC Mr. Almost)

We have 27 more days of this but I am already at the edge of my interest. If we stay put at 6 it is QB or WR. If we trade up it is a QB. The only mystery and intrigue comes if we trade down. There are only so many ways we can rehash our views on this from now until draft day.

I am focusing on what we do in R2-6 if we do not trade. I think QB is R1 or bust as 5, possibly 6 go R1 and the rest are just bang average future back-up types (Pratt) or look like Greek Gods in shorts but are incapable of mastering the intricacies of the college game in pads and so have zero chance at NFL level (Milton).

Ed, I made my pitch for Maye and sitting him a year in another thread so you get my vote!
