BBH Baseball Board / Mo gets #600

Congrats to Mo.    He got save number 600 last night in Seattle putting him just 1 behind Hoffman.  Pretty impressive.

Let me throw in a question if I may.   One of my all time favorite non-Yankee World Series was 1968 between the Cards and the Tigers.   Tiger manager Mayo Smith made quite a bold defensive move during that series.  What did he do?

OK Steve how about Luke Appling and Little Luis Aparicio

Luke was a bit before my time but I remember pictures of him with the old Sox lobo   the big S with an O and an X in the middle of the S     I always thought it was pretty cool

And from my youth I remember the Go-Sox of 1959.    Aparicio teamed up with Nellie Fox (played at Jamestown by the way) to form a pretty good double play combo.

I do believe that Brian nailed that one.    If memory serves the Scooter used to love to say Bye Bye Balboni all the time.

Steve:  when you said "toys in the attic" between his years makes me think of a knuckleballer as most of them are a bit on the strange side, or so it seems so I thought of Wilbur Wood but he was a lefty.  They did have a bit of an odd ball with longish hair and a fu manchu for a couple of seasons.  Was it Pete Vuckovich (Clu Haywood of Major League)??

Ah the Buffalo Braves      "Thats two for McAdoo"

Ok Steve    I would think it has to be Babe Ruth.   But that seems to obvious.   But it is the best guess I have so I'll go with it.

NFL Draft, NY Giants style / Re: Yay...a Terrapin

Yes I understand that anyone can look good in a highlite film BUT if this kid Scott and Jernigan can come anywheres close to what these films show our Giants offense could end up being an awful lot of fun to watch.  A cloud of dust and they are gone.  I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.

Jim:   no it didn't go into cyberspace and your not loosing your mind.  I posted both on this thread and the one I started about a question for the long in tooth on the main board.   And I asked for anyone with an opinion on Big Red to either post here on the history board or to my thread on the main board.   You answered the thread on the main board.   Sorry for the confusion my friend.

When I first saw this thread I thought it was interesting and a few names crossed my mind but just never got around to posting anything on it.   But seeing it again made me think about my favorite player growing up/and my posting name of course--Alex Webster.

And I got to thinking--was he or was he not a star.  I am not really sure.  It was probably tough being considered a star on the same team loaded with a Huff, Gifford, Conerly, Tittle, Brown, Grier, Katcavage, Robustelli, Lynch, Patton etc.  When the subject of star players of the Giants from the 50's and 60's comes up it seems that Big Red is rarely mentioned.

His best year yardage wise was 1961 when he rushed for 928 and a 4.7 average.  It was the closest a Giant player came to 1000 until Ron Johnson became the first Giant to break that barrier.  He had a pretty good first year with the Giants in 1955 when he rushed for 634 on 128 attempts for that magic figure of 5.0 yards per attempt with a long of 71 yards.  Not to shabby.

So I sort of have a question for some of you Giant fans who are a bit long in tooth like me and remember Red.    Was he a star???

We just arrived home.

May I echo the sentiments of everyone else.   My family and I had a fantastic time.

All you guys and gals are top shelf.   I only wish Ralph could have made it.  But it was just great.

Our thanks to all.
