Not sure if I have ever heard of someone asking to be released off of a practice squad.

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 20, 2023, 12:59:08 PMI appreciate that, based on salaries, teams are really valuing DI players these days.  Yet I saw this Tweet

https://x.com/PFF/status/1715042624250278308?s=20

I thought, the Giants have really struggled defending the run this season and are at the bottom in sacks.

PFF has Dex generating:

0 sacks
5 hits
16 pressures

Then I think about the impact Parsons has on the Dallas D and Dex seems to have a much smaller impact despite having similar PFF grades:  Parsons 91  Dex 90.6

During the Bill's game the TV guys commented about how the run game was better for Buffalo when DeX was not in the game.

Aside from that, I think this team has a couple of issues in the run game:

1) Gap discipline.  When the DL absorbs a double team the LBs and/or secondary need to be able to make the play. Pinnock for example has over pursued on a lot of plays.

2) Aggressive play calling by the DC sometimes leaves the team exposed to big runs.

Or perhaps you see a dropoff in the backup RBs because the blocking has been mostly putrid and a RB that is a JAG (just another guy) cannot get it done.

Matt Breida averaged over 4 YPC prior to this season.  Has his ability dropped off that much since last season?  I guess at 28 it could be the case. Just odd that his production per attempted has basically been halved in an offseason.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 20, 2023, 10:24:56 AMThey also did a significant gut job several years ago. Which is something we know the Giants are averse to.

Yes trading guys like Tunsil and Fitzpatrick worked out for Miami.  There have been plenty of teams that have attempted similar things only to land in the same place several years later.  For the Giants to go that route I think they would need to get rid of Andrew Thomas and Dexter Lawrence.  Are you suggesting they go that route?

Would be interesting to see what the pass rush looks like with a 2nd half lead at some point.

Quote from: Ed Vette on October 19, 2023, 12:44:01 PMImagine having a goal and wishing since you were a kid to be a star in the National Football League. All the training and sacrifices, successes and failures, rehabilitation from injuries and frustrations. Just to make it to this level is a tremendous accomplishment. We can assume his time here is over but I wish him hope and the best for him and his family.

Ed,

with him it strikes me that he looked very destine for that goal in college where he was a 4 year starter and I don't think missed a game.

Is this 3 years in a row for him to have a season ending injury?

Guy makes one play on STs for another team and we are "dinging" Schoen for not having him on the roster?

I don't understand some of this sometimes. Every time Romeo Okwaru had a sack for Detroit there was a thread about it.  In this case it's a 30 year old WR who has caught 8 passes since 2021 and had 1 highlight reel play returning a punt.  He's returned punts for the last couple of years and this is his one long return.

Seemed like last week the team was not blitzing as much (that may be incorrect).

If that is correct, it's probably not a surprise they played their best defensive game.  If you are blitzing and not getting pressure,  you are going to leave a lot open.

Isn't IR designated to return a 4 week minimum?  So Thomas could have gone that way and possibly JMS?

Quote from: zephirus on October 18, 2023, 04:57:33 PMCurious to see when the pendulum starts to swing back in the other direction.  College influenced the NFL some years back when Oregon and their ilk ran a brand of football that was not pro-style, but effective in winning.  It started bleeding into the NFL in a trickle, with Cam Newton or Marcus Mariota.  Even in 2016 or 2017 the top QBs were mostly still pocket passers.  By 2018/19 the shift was more prevalent with Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield to a certain extent, Kyler Murray, even Daniel Jones.  They're equally as mixed a bag as the pocket passers of the same years but seemingly more injury prone.

Not sure if it ever will swing back unless the NFL makes rules to slow the pass rushers.

It is pretty wild to me that this has been slowly progressing since SI called Cunningham the QB for the 90's and has recently accelerated to the point you described.

Even with all the rules protecting QBs, there has still been plenty of injuries this year.  I think I heard that 40 guys have started games so far this year.

I mentioned in a thread that these young mobile guys need to learn to slide.  Have seen a number of them take some big hits. Not sure if that's what caused Richardson's injury, but I'd did see him make some decisions to try and put his shoulder down into a tackler this year.

The NFL wants scoring and to protect QBs, but when they are mobil, they have less protection in some situations.

Quote from: Trench on October 18, 2023, 04:59:45 PMDon't know and don't care. He would have been an instant upgrade at a position we identified as extremely problematic and raw

Well the guy in charge of the salary cap has to care about stuff like that.

That logic is what brought the team Nate Solder.

#1093
Seems like Thomas should have gone on IR.

Quote from: Trench on October 18, 2023, 02:26:44 PMSchoen didn't want to kick the tires on this guy earlier shows he isn't that good in assessing oline talent. Pugh (on limited) practice and game shape played pretty well on national tv off the coach.

One must wonder how would our line be if he began the season with us

Do we know what he was asking for a contract then?
#1094
If this is true it's pretty absurd for a variety of reasons.

One would think an agent would know the rules regarding this.

Pugh is on the practice squad?  Was it me or should he be starting next week?
