The Front Porch / Re: Just a joke

I've always wondered what my parents did in their spare time before the internet. I've asked all 19 of my brothers and sisters and they don't know either.

If this is NY, imagine what is going on in the Southern states?

I don't need to imagine Lenn. My county in Alabama is about to pass 32% of the population fully vaccinated.

For those in denial about the choice of getting vaccinated, and the effect it may have on the status of an NFL roster spot, Urban Meyer tells the truth about what is going on even though the Jags are already in damage control mode.

Thanks Ed. Great right up and thanks for giving me some news about the TEs and how they are being used.

Is Gallman any bigger? He was always a solid back who finished runs well but also always looked like he could add more muscle below the waist. He is a a smaller version of Jonathan Stewart. I'd like to know if he did the off season work in the weight room.

*Bert feared his wife Peg wasn't hearing as well as she
used to and he thought *
*she might need a hearing aid.*

*Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family
Doctor to discuss the problem. ;*
*The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the
husband could perform to give the *
*Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.*

*'Here's what you do,' said the Doctor, 'stand about 40
feet away from her, and in a normal *
*conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If
not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and *
*so on until you get a response.' *

*That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner,
and he was In the den.   He says to himself, *
*'I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens.' Then
in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, *
            *what's for dinner?' *
            *No response. *

*So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30
feet from his wife and repeats, *
            *'Peg, what's for dinner?' *
            *Still no response. *

*Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20
feet from his Wife and asks, *
            *'Honey, what's for dinner?'*
*Again he gets no response. *

*So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away.
            'Honey, what's for dinner?'*
            *Again there is no response.*

*So he walks right up behind her. 'Peg, what's for dinner?' *

*'For God sake, Bert, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!'*

My son, Gareth, an insurance broker in Florida, loves ocean fishing and takes his cell phone along on the boat. One morning we were drifting about ten miles offshore as Gareth discussed business on the phone. Suddenly his rod bent double, and the reel screamed as line poured off the spool.

Gareth was master of the situation. "Pardon me," he told his customer calmly. "I have a call on another line."

I would think that someone would want to know how many people may avoid their long post or just skim through it before deciding to put that much time and effort into their work.

I think we need to remember that some are reading posts when we really should be working. Some long posts get sidestepped for that reason. not me though.  :smug:

I understand the reason for the poll. I certainly have experienced the disappointment of a carefully constructed post that no one responded to, quite possibly due to its length.

If we are going to try and limit this to 140 characters, there is already a forum for that.

I read many but not all of the long posts. Some days I might not read any. Other days when I have more time, I like to read the perspectives of others, often regardless of how long they embellish. I will also say that long rants about the latest thing somebody doesn't like, has no interest for me. I am more interested in what someone thinks or doesn't think far more than what they like or don't like. Those are not always separable, but I find a well thought out a reasoned discussion is interesting, regardless of length, even if I don't agree.

I don't disagree on your takes, its a pricey venture.  It could prove to be a Julio Jones type trade though, expensive but worth every penny.

Its a good point, do you think his production was due to limited ability, not system?  He has to be one of the most freakish athletes ever at the position.

His production was inflated due to the system, in my opinion. Hurts was a young QB. His designed throws were primarily to big targets, in the 15 yard area, or roll outs on double moves.

OJ Howard is a good player and could be an all-pro in the right system. I simply don't see the Giants drafting him or any other TE in Round 1 to be the 4th option for the next two seasons, if he can get on the field.

I've seen a lot of Howard so let me just put this out there. He wasn't the favorite target for any QB at Alabama, ever. Would you want to spend a 1st Round pick, and another pick to trade up for a guy that should be great someday? 11 TEs had more yards than he had last season. 13 had more receptions. Does that sound like a 1st round pick to you?

Give me the guy who is great now.

I maybe wrong, but the 1st 3 rounds get your key needs, after that go after the best guy on the board, like the giants drafted jessie armstead at the last 8th round of the draft.

Joey, I actually see it quite different.

In Round 1, needs are secondary, if considered at all. The player you draft will be signed to a 5-year deal which means he will still be under contract when the current contract for every other player on the roster has expired. So there is literally no position on the team that he cannot play in 5 years. That is when "Best Player Available" comes into play. It doesn't matter who you currently have signed, you take the best guy on the board in most cases who, with the talent available that early in the draft, could very well be an upgrade at all positions but a few.

Obviously some logic has to enter into the selection. Since the Giants just signed Olivier Vernon last year and JPP this year to long term deals, they probably don't want to spend a first round pick on a guy who will spend most of his time on the bench over the next 3 years. Conversely, if they think Eli has two good years left and the highest rated QB on their board sitting there when the Giants' selection comes up. They may decide he is the best player and can learn for two years and then start, with 3 years still left on his contract for the Giants to fully evaluate if he is "the guy" or not.

In Rounds 2 and 3, there are still starting quality players and the cost and contract durations are less. In my opinion, this is where teams start going for players who can contribute immediately in an area of need.  The Giants consistently draft players in Round 2 that they plan to use immediately and quite frankly have done poorly with the 3rd Round selections for many years.

Then comes the day 3 picks. Some of these players are still guys who can start or contribute immediately as specialists (K, P, FB, Gunner, Nickle CB), but there are also projects and players coming off injuries that can be had for a reasonable cost and could wind up contributing for a long time on Special Teams or as a backup, but obviously the hope is that the player develops into a starter. The Giants have had their share of hits and misses with guys like David  Tyree or Matt Dodge, respectively. The one certainty is that teams who make the playoffs find contributors here. When the Giants were going to the Superbowls 6-10 years ago they were finding the Bradshaws, Bosses and Andre Browns, and also the Blackburns and Butlers as undrafted free agents. That has slowed considerably lately, and the Giants have pretty much had a two round draft for the last 8 years.
