Sam:  Correct.  And we've learned to forgive him for his miss from in close against the Bears in the 85 playoffs.

however some of us never forgive him for shanking a 32 yarder vs the Browns as time ran out in a 35-33 1985 loss...NYG's go 11-5 instead of 10-6, meaning a showdown with Bears in championship game probably, and for him to then miss in close against Bears.

Leo Gasciana (spelling) I didn't need to click the link.  bradshaw hanratty and Jefferson st joe Gillam were either all "striking" or hurt and the steelers needed qb's for practice.

Giants History / Re: Vince Costello
May 11, 2021, 04:10:07 PM
"Seven Days to Sunday, Crisis week with the NY football G's"  has many pages devoted to Vince Costello.  A few excerpts from my copy:

"In 1957, Costello was Cleveland's rookie of the year.  Now in 1967, I told him he should get the Giants old man of the year award.  I will get that in 1977 when I retire"

"Costello was the number one social lion on the club, although just joining the team, his face was open and friendly and brown eyes alert to everyone around him"

"his experience was rich and his knowledge was great, and he was a warm giving teammate who enriched the entire club with his presence"

"I got eyes in my ears, explained Costello. He repeatedly made big interceptions and then drove his stubby legs hard for effective runbacks.  I picked up a few running skills from watching Jimmy Brown all those years.  If you studied my style, you would see that.  I told him you look as much as Jimmy Brown as an alley cat does to a Lion"

if anyone is interested Check out NFL 1967 NYG highlights avail on youtube or 1967 GOTW Packers vs Giants @Yankee, for a glimpse of the stubby legged Costello

As a forum moderator, you of all people would understand the difference between what people say they were banned for versus what people are actually banned for.   Rarely does a single post or action elicit a ban, it's usually based on patterns of behavior and escalating discipline measures

Huh? ask the dick face weasel mods on BBWC or Bermuda Bahamas Interactive if that's true...I took a 13 year sabbatical from posting on any Giants.com or related football boards after SB 42 and now when I have come back? I am banned or wont allow me to register.  a big middle finger to them and a huge thank you to this board for allowing me to converse.

ok - back to cancelled people!

This is easy, The Crunch Bunch! Van Pelt, Kelley, Carson and LT. Van Pelt was their best player of the 70's, LT, their best player of the 80's and Carson, who was never the best linebacker on any Giants team, but good enough for the HOF. Kelley wasn't too shabby either.

I'll second Giant Jim. this one is number 1

Back to Benny Hill

The reason I love Benny Hill is the versatility he brings.  triple threat old time vaudeville of comedy singing dancing....and both sets of my grandparents used to watch him! He transcended generations and the entire family, unbelievable as it sounds with todays cancel culture, would sit and watch the shows....and everyone laughed!  go figure a family all laughing together in 2021.

Yes I do.  They are an endless source of entertainment for me and my wife (and my 99 11/12 year old mom... yes, she will turn 100 in June). They would probably not go over to well in today's social atmosphere.  Bob

That's wonderful Bob! God bless her!...my Mom is 85 and she also enjoys watching them.

no they don't go over well for many reasons imo. younger people watching would not get most of the in-jokes due to time period or be very offended by the ethnicity ribbing. Dean Martin to Freddie Prinz "Freddie made the show just in time. He was released from Jail today for stealing hubcaps off the set of Chico and the man"

some of the Dean Martin roasts are available on Amozon Prime now. I've watched quite a few of them. Very Funny stuff!

Ozzie - a couple of months ago DECADES channel did its weekend binge and showed edited versions of the Roasts.   One trick pony comedians like Foster Brooks are edited out completely! I have a VHS collection I ordered in 1990 (?) that are full shows. Brooks drunk chatter brought howls of laughter circa 1975...but when I watch now? I don't think its that funny after a while I want him to get off the stage and let Rickles or anyone take over!

speaking of one trick comedians...you folks remember "You can call me Ray, you can call me Jay..." guy? His naming of names would go on for about 2 mins while the audience laughed...he always ended all the names you could call him with..."but you doesn't have to call me Mr Johnson" his foil would then say "but Mr Johnson" and he would start all over again spouting names you can call him...I groaned when I saw that act then, now I just skip him

Nap: I have seen that episode several times.  I have a Rickels DVD collection that contains probably all of his Carson Show appearances.  Bob

Bob - do you have the "Dean Martin Roasts"?

I believe stand up comedy is taking some lumps. I know some of the comedians I like have said playing the college circuit now is almost non existent. Everyone is so "Politically Correct" and offended by everything. Can you just imagine Don Rickles trying to make a living today?? :o

no way!  A mob or Mobs of different cancel culture vultures would show up in protest and probably drown out his act!

quick Rickles bit Johnny Carson show circa 1973 seated on the couch "Yea Johnny just got married again..(laughter/applause then he looks at Johnny)... its great that her intials are " JC" Johnny! you wont have to change the towels in the guest bathrooms"....

The Front Porch / Re: The Assault on Democracy
May 08, 2021, 09:44:01 PM
Folks - I just want to take a moment and say "thank you" for allowing me to post here.

I will not talk politics with anyone here, yet I will talk sports/entertainment/science and other fun subjects all day.  I learned 20 or so years ago on Giants.com that politics and these sports boards do not make good bedfellows. it skewed the way I conversed with certain posters when trying to talk about the NYG's.

I was disappointed about the lack of detail of Rozelle's involvement 78/79 feud and internal problems between the 2 owners.

Lurtsema was a prime example of Well's involvement that hurt the team during that 20 year stretch.

true. it was Rozelle saying that 2 guys that couldn't even ride the same elevator or ride in the same limos or stand in the same room..I had to get them to agree on a GM.....Hell we all knew that. I agree that it would have been cool to see memo's written and how tough it was to get them to together, just to agree.

Thanks jimv for the recommendation. I finally got it and couldn't put it down. Usually I'm very narrow minded and only want to read about the Giants, but the histories of these older teams were very interesting and it showed how the Giants were so important to the league. Jack & Wellington were the "owners", president & vice president early on, but old man Tim was the boss. Almost from the day the Redskins joined the league, they were the Giants biggest rival. (Not Philly) Great information about George Preston Marshall, how the Redskins got their name, their move to DC and so much more. How basic rules we take for granted today came about, how TV was used by the different teams and so much more. A lot of stuff I knew a little about was fully explained. A must read for any fan of NFL or even just Giants history.    The League: How Five Rivals Created the NFL and Launched a Sports Empire, by John Eisenberg.

Before I read it, I read another book also titled "The League", this one by  David Harris. Also about the ownership of the teams and problems. It starts with 1974 and goes to around 1985. It does go back to 1959 and the problems they ran into thru the 60's. This book has an unbelievable amount of information and goes into tremendous detail. But it can get quite boring. Not much about the Giants in this one, I don't think nephew Tim's name is even mentioned. Pete Roselle, Tex Schramm and Art Modell replaced Tim Mara, George Halas, Bert Bell, Marshall & Dan Rooney running the NFL. If anyone wants my hard cover of this book, I just want what it costs me to mail it. The League: The Rise and Decline of the NFL by David Harris.
Jim - there are chapters about Well/Tim, the feud and how Well Mara tried to squelch the union uprisings in 1970, 1974 & 1975.  Well was very anti union and if you all recall, he cut all the strikers from the 1974 holdout in preseason.  Including union Rep rb Charlie Evans.  It also discusses the 1971 cut of NYG Union leader DLiner Bob Lurtsema in mid season due to a union questionnaire that was handed out to the entire team about what they thought of the NYG's/NFL and was returned with very negative responses. Lurtsema was cut the next day, October 1971.

Although I lived thru the WFL, I haven't read up on if that league influenced the 1976 expansion to Seattle and Tampa yet. Memphis had one of the best teams in the WFL and I believe it was considered. I'd love for someone to add the early history of Seattle and Tampa to this thread and the 1995 expansion. I might add how the oldest teams entered one day. (Giants, Bears, Redskins, etc) Glad you enjoyed.

Good call Jim!  Spot on. The Memphis Southman with HC John Mcvay was surely a reason the NFL bypassed Memphis.  the official reason was the Liberty Bowl was too small by 1975, with the Kingdome and Tampa promising 80K to only 40K for the Liberty.  Its also why Portland was rejected, not for WFL team that they had, but the Stadium was too small for NFL.  Charlotte and Jacksonville had WFL teams yet both were in the running for 1976 due to large stadiums available and lost out with the promise that next time....they waited 20 years for the next time LOL great thread again!
