No way the Chargers pass on either Nabers or Harrison.

It's a long shot.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 15, 2024, 09:23:01 AMFor those who may not appreciate Neil's reference, Ralph V reported:

The last thing Mara wants to do is fire another coach, especially after he fired each of his past three after two seasons or less on the job. He craves stability for his franchise and, said one team source, "He's legitimately embarrassed by how much turnover there's been."

He should be embarrassed. Who hired Shurmer, Gettleman, Judge? To avoid further embarrassment he should find someone who know football (and not stuck in the past) to run the Giants and stay out of it.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 14, 2024, 11:00:27 AMI would be challenged to think of a worse reason to decide to draft a player
If that is the only reason they are drafting the player, yes. It's do we get fired if we continue to lose with an average, injury-prone QB or do we roll the dice on a a potentially good prospect and hope to turn the franchise around. If the latter is a bad outcome they will be gone just as they would be gone staying the course and losing with what they already have.

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 14, 2024, 10:12:37 AMI agree, if you have been following my posts on him. I also have cautious enthusiasm for JJ McCarthy but his book in only in the first chapter.
I can't break down what makes a great QB in terms of evaluations. I do know McCarthy was at the helm of one of the most successful teams in major college football the past two years. And if the post philosophers had about how coaches think they can make a QB into top ten material, than I think they would be better suited with a younger QB with unlimited potential than one who has played five years and never shown any greatness in the position.
Quote from: Philosophers on April 14, 2024, 10:16:48 AMWhat I am saying is how I think the Giants feel, not how I feel.

If what you say is true, Philo, than we fans are in for an even longer drought of watchable football. And you might be correct. Mara is an owner stuck in the past. He has no vision. His father was the same. They might be nice, loyal, generous people, but as owners of an NFL franchise, they are hopeless.

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 14, 2024, 10:01:29 AMI think they can win games and he was a top twelve QB in 2022. In the right system perhaps he can repeat it. I have my doubts after last season.

With a 1,500 yard rusher, yeah. And hope the opposition misses chip shot field goals. Wild card is the high ceiling.

Quote from: Philosophers on April 14, 2024, 09:44:41 AMI think coaching staffs almost always think they can make some players top 10 at their position.  Their egos are too big.
Not happening here. After the Commanders pick their QB there is a very good chance the Giants will have the worst QB in the division.

Quote from: Philosophers on April 14, 2024, 09:14:47 AMI think the Giants feel if they get better OL play especially in pass rush plus get a WR1 and add another RB or TE that a healthy DJ can be a top 12 or maybe top 10 QB and that they can win with that.  I also think they are less concerned than fans are about the injury history and conclude better protection insures against that.  This is the reason they go WR at 6 and maybe RB in round 2 or 3.  If DJ fails, Dabs will be gone and a new coach will then go get another QB in 2025 however the offense will now have a true X WR1, plus a good WanDale and Jalin and a young RB to build around a new rookie QB.
I have never seen anything out of Jones in his five years as a Giant that makes me think he can ever exceed what he did in 22. At best he is a mid-level QB. The injuries just cement to me that there is not a chance that the Giants can be successful beyond maybe a wild card appearance with Jones as their QB.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on April 13, 2024, 04:49:05 PMCould be, but I doubt it. Rumor has it Vikings love Penix. They could get him at 11 and at 23 het a Right Tackle for there Left handed QB. The Raiders have Minshaw for now the Odonnall. They could select Bo Nix with there pick
Penix is a better fit for the Vikes than McCarthy or Maye in my opinion.

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 13, 2024, 04:19:52 PMCould the Chargers be looking to draft an OT and moving back they can do that with Minn and pick up the 11th and 23rd pick and get an OT and WR?
But they will miss out on the top three receivers. And they have no receivers now. None.

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 13, 2024, 03:43:25 PMSo no trade up by any other teams? Minnesota needs a QB and the Raiders too.
I see NE as the best trade partner for Minnesota. Their roster is the worst in the NFL. A rookie QB will struggle like Bryce Young this past year. They have so many holes and need draft capital. Arizona and/or Chargers lose our on the top receivers if they trade back. Don't see them doing that unless it's with the Giants.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on April 13, 2024, 10:40:13 AMReally tough question to answer, because what one sees as "bad" or "good" in the immediate days following the draft may look completely different three years later.

For example, I felt great about Evan Neal and great about Thibodeaux. I now feel terrible about Evan Neal and good but not necessarily quite great about Thibodeaux. Clearly there are other examples we can come up with.

If we're going just by how I'm going to feel in early May about everything, I'll take my best shot:

Best case: One of the top four QBs falls to the six spot and it happens to be someone our front office had a very high grade on.

Worst case: We end up with an O lineman, a defensive player, or Bowers and don't get any QB in this draft, forcing us to go into the season with a hobbled Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, and a highly suspect cast of offensive skill players.

That is pretty much how I feel. Whether the Giants go the easy, safe route and not get a top young QB prospect will, to me, just reinforce how stodgy and stuck in the the past the organization is. But if they do gamble on a QB in the first round, we fans won't know the results, good or bad, for at least a couple of years. In any case, whoever they choose won't impact 2024 much. It's beyond 2024 that matters most.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 13, 2024, 06:54:20 AMJeff,

I appreciate there are a few here guilty of shooting the messenger (or heaping massive praise on the messenger) because their opinion matches their own.  However, I think they are the exception, not the rule.  I think most here consider both the soundness of the argument and the qualifications of the person putting forth the argument when they consider what was said.

I was more than willing to listen to Tike because as a former HB and broadcaster is qualified to give his opinion.  That said, Tiki lost me when he claimed the scheme JJ worked in at Michigan doesn't translate to the NFL.  Michigan ran an NFL-style offense, and the things you saw JJ doing translated far better to the NFL than all the other top prospects (to some degree or other).
Tiki and his co-host have moved on from any serious sports analysis or dialogue to trying to entertain with quips about what they had for lunch. Tiki's opinion carries  zero weight with me. But like all of us here, he could be right. That doesn't make his opinion an informed one.

Quote from: Rosehill Jimmy on April 12, 2024, 05:31:41 PMIn my opinion, moving out of top 10 almost assures missing out on one of the top WRs.
Better odds getting a number one receiver in later rounds than a QB.

Quote from: andrew_nyGiants on April 12, 2024, 01:45:15 PMMy point is a reach is a reach. Giving up three 1st round picks and then some for anyone in this class (with the possible exception of Williams) is a massive reach.

Just as DJ @ 6 was a massive reach.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see us upgrade at QB, and I'm open to trading up to make it happen.

But not at AZ's price.

AZ's price is a joke. They won't get it.
