I was all in on Crowder this year and really wished they had held onto him for exactly the reasons you list.  When he's healthy I think he's one of the best slot guys in the league.  Very shifty vet.

That's a GREAT haul for Williams.  Well done.

Quote from: ozzie on October 27, 2023, 09:12:32 AMNot saying it was a great draft class, but what is the average length of an NFL career?
How many players get a 10+ year run?

agree- the "out of league" piece is not a good way to evaluate a draft that's this old.  I'd assume most drafts would have this many dudes out of the league after 10 years.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 25, 2023, 05:23:03 PMHow is moving a couple of vets you're not going to re-sign, after starting the year 2-6, "throwing in the towel on the entire organization"? I don't see how what I said is putting anything in "such extreme terms." Your point would make sense if I was suggesting getting rid of players they would otherwise want to keep. I'm talking about trying to salvage some value from pieces we will not be keeping. What is so "extreme" about that?

Read my post I guess. There are nine games left in the season in your scenario. Offloading a team captain and other key vets (assume you mean guys like adoree and Leonard williams?) in the middle of the season would absolutely be seen inside the locker room as throwing in the towel. Do you not agree?

At least with adoree you've got some young guys that could effectively replace him based on performance. But with Saquon?  I've seen zero evidence of his replacement on this roster yet.

I don't really want Jones back there until Thomas is back and feeling healthy.  Too much risk with too little reward.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 25, 2023, 01:18:37 PMIf they lose to the Jets this Sunday to fall to 2-6, I think they'd be crazy to not try to offload vets they have no long term plans for. What possible argument can be made for not doing that? Perhaps they think Barkley won't command more than what they'll probably get as a compensation pick, or maybe they want to have him as a tagged asset, but it's perplexing to me that they'd 100% close themselves out to trading him as a 2-6 team. The only explanation I can think of for having that attitude is if they fully intend to definitely sign him long term, which I think would be surprising.

I must disagree and I'm surprised you would put it in these extreme terms- "they'd be crazy to not try to offload vets they have no long term plans for".

You are talking about completely throwing in the towel as an organization with NINE GAMES left to play in the season.  Consider the actual effects of putting up essentially a fire sale at the midpoint of the season- the effect on the locker room?  The effect on the culture of the team?  The loyalty of the organization to Saquon, a team captain in particular?  It's easy to say things like "they'd be crazy to not try to offload vets" on a message board- but in reality, in the actual locker room of a winning culture that is supposedly trying to be built- it would be a disaster.

So that would definitely be my argument against trying to "offload" vets, especially as it pertains to Saquon.  Which, it seems, jives with what Daboll and Schoen are thinking.

Hard to argue the Giants aren't a much better offense with Saquon on the field.  If they're truly committed to Daniel Jones it makes sense to keep Saquon with him (at the right price...of course as always).

Really glad to see they're showing some loyalty here publicly.  That has an impact in the locker room, when a team captain that works their ass off for the franchise receives that kind of support.

Not a good sign for Willis at all.  I hope he proves me wrong, but I have no clue why Will Levis was ever elevated as high in the draft as he landed.  Personally, I think scouts were squinting way too hard trying to make him the next Josh Allen.

Seems like an appropriate stat to share here:

I'm moving more toward the feeling that he ain't all that great.  Might be a great fantasy football QB but I just don't think he's accurate, a gamer, or a guy who elevates the team around him.

The play sucks and I can't wait until it's outlawed.   :ok:

NCAA did not penalize Clemson following Day's accusation.  Show me proof as I don't remember it and have not seen it.

NCAA did not penalize OSU when Meyer had a domestic abuser on his staff. OSU suspended Meyer for a few games.  Show me proof NCAA penalized OSU.

Auburn pays Cam Newton.  NCAA found no evidence linking Auburn payments to Newton, however, Newton's father admits getting paid.  Show me proof NCAA penalized Auburn.

University of Tennessee bagman (and implicitly SEC) - Show me proof NCAA penalized U-T last 10 years.

And let's not forget UNC completely avoiding any kind of penalties.

As a Penn State fan and alum, don't get me started on the ridiculous hypocrisy of NCAA enforcement.  They are as much a media organization as they are any kind of consistent rules regulation.

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 23, 2023, 03:25:15 PMHerbert is an interesting case study.  By QB stats, they have an elite QB on a cheap rookie contract.

On the other hand, their record doesn't reflect that natural advantage.

Not sure what to make of it.

hmmm it definitely seems like the defense has been terrible, in terms of PPG against- just some quick math with your stats above it's around 25-27 PPG scored on the Chargers each year.  I do wonder with the talent the guy has and the talent that's around him why he hasn't been able to win more games....just did a quick search and it looks like he's 27-28 as a starter.  I've got a good buddy who's a Chargers fan, I might check in with him and see what insight he might have.  Something definitely seems off.

Big Blue Huddle / NGT - Is Justin Herbert good?
October 23, 2023, 02:45:34 PM
Saw a stat today that said Herbert has more losses since he entered the league than any other active QB.  Have also noticed that he's been injured a bit as well.  I've not followed the Chargers much so I don't know about their OL other than I know they got a good one in Slater a few years back.  I do know they have some elite weapons in Ekeler and Keenan Allen.

Anyway, for the past few years I've felt he's been overrated- that I hadn't really seen a ton from him even though he's obviously got the arm strength to spare.  He certainly doesn't seem to be winning like he was expected to.  I know quite a few folks on this board really like him and wished we had waited a year to draft our QB in order to get him so I thought it would be interesting to check in with folks and see what they thought of the guy.  I watched a bit of the LA-KC game this past weekend and honestly Herbert left a lot of plays on the field, IMO.

So- thoughts?

Good?  No.  Not a complete disaster?  Yes.  But no....definitely not good.  We can only hope the arrow continues to point up toward good as we get some of our OL back and healthy.
