Has a 1st place team ever fired their coach before? Down 2-0 to this crap Ducks team with two ridiculously stupid goals has me ready to blow the whole thing up. They need some sort of a shakeup to get them out of this funk. Right now there's not a team in the league I feel confident they can beat.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on January 19, 2024, 09:30:14 PMThe Bears have a huge say on weather we get a QB or not. For sure Washington and Patriots are getting one, Chargers won't get a QB, and Arizona probably will stick with Murrey, hopefuly the Bears stick with fields and get a WR and O-line help, or a WR and a TE.

Even if the bears decide to keep fields...and I don't think they will...they will trade that pick to somebody who will take Caleb. It could be the Pats or Commies in which case nothing changes for the Giants unless they decide to try and trade with the bears again at that point.  Or the bears could trade Caleb to a team like the falcons in which case it eliminates pretty much any chance of the Giants getting a QB in round 1. But there is no world in which anybody other than Caleb Williams goes #1 unless he gets hurt between now and then.

Quote from: Doc16LT56 on January 19, 2024, 11:32:02 PMAt the end of the day Gettleman had to retire in disgrace. Meanwhile, OBJ has collected $100 million, has a championship ring, and is competing for a second ring. He's no longer an alpha dog on offense but when he retires he can be proud of what he accomplished on the field and he's achieved generational wealth. I don't see the problem.

The mishandling of this entire situation was really the first sign to me that gettleman had no idea what he was doing. It was certainly not the last. What OBJ is saying is true regardless of the messenger. The niners were prepared to go much higher for his services and gettleman chose being petty and selfish and putting his own feelings above that of the team. It wouldn't be the last time he did that either.

Quote from: Trench on January 19, 2024, 12:43:45 PMAgreed. Dabol coached with absolute fear in Jets game. It was an embarrassment. He allowed ultra conservative play calling all season long. He deserves to get a chance to rectify next year but all this smoke coming out now does not bode well for him unless he has a big season.

I'm still concerned he had the Joe Judge deer in headlights look several times this season. Not good

I disagree about the Jets game.  You have to think going into that game Devito had exactly 0 practice reps because he was the 3rd string guy.  If anything he was scout team QB.  And the defense was essentially pitching a shutout.  The most likely way for them to lose that game was to let Devito do something stupid.  Barkley was running well..the defense was manhandling the Jets...and the Giants had the lead.

I question the decision to kick the FG with a broken kicker at the end rather than go for 4th down for sure.  But with everything that happened before that they had 4th and 1 where either a FG or a first down wins them the game. They just blew it and then the defense gave up the only two big plays they gave up the entire game.

I would be ok with Nix in Round 2...but certainly not in Round 1.  The big 3 are worth it, even with a trade up, but if they can't make that happen then I think they have no choice but to punt on a Round 1 QB and hope that one of the Tier 2 guys falls to Round 2.

Kind of crazy that they couldn't get at least one in the net during that first 10 mins of the 1st period.  They spent basically the entire first half of that period in the offensive zone but nothing got through.  Then of course they give up 2 before the period is over and the entire team is deflated.  Followed by your typical 2 goals in 30 seconds that happens more often with the Rangers than any other team in the league and that was that.  They have hit a bit of a rut here and do need to make some adjustments.  I don't know about a mirage but they are not getting the breaks they got early in the season that's for sure.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Where Schoen went wrong

Quote from: Giant Jim on January 18, 2024, 04:01:31 PMCampbell and Waller were Gettleman type moves. As soon as Schoen had money to spend, he went right for skill players while fielding an unknown offensive line with no depth. The Barkley contract only kept him here for 1 year and now it's off the books. He did good with Jones, no one knew he would be hurt and possibly not ready to start next season. If Jones isn't the answer, most of his contract is gone after '24.

The Waller deal I would argue is one that wouldn't fall into a rushed category.  They gave up so little for a potential stud and he is still under contract so it wasn't a one year rental.

The Jones deal on the other hand is probably more of an egregious mistake to me but again I imagine he just didn't want to hear the fans lose their minds over starting Tyrod Taylor and ending up in the top 5 of the draft again after they had just made the playoffs.  Even if that was the intended plan as I think it was and should have been prior to the 2022 season. If nothing else he did give himself a parachute escape after next season with Jones which at least shows, unlike Gettleman, he did have an eye on the future and a plan in place.

It's because of that first season's success.  The whole plan got thrown out of wack.  They should have been terrible, they tried to be terrible, and in fact they weren't all that good they just wont a lot of close games late with dumb luck and good coaching.  But it's so hard to look the fan base in the eye and say I know we just went to and won a playoff game...but we're getting rid of the QB, getting rid of best offensive player we have, and going forward with the plan with Tyrod Taylor at QB.

So they should probably take one of these QBs in the first round if it is at all possible.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on January 16, 2024, 06:03:00 PMThe problem I have with making 2024 a do or die year for Daboll is the QB position. If we happen to be starting a rookie next year, and he struggles a bit but perhaps shows some improvement over the course of the year and we end up 7-10, would you necessarily fire him?

If we don't draft a QB and Jones struggles again or gets hurt again and we're depending on another backup, and we have a similar record to this year, are you firing Daboll for that? Would you fire both Daboll and Schoen?

If we fire Daboll after next year and then draft a QB in 2025 along with hiring Daboll's replacement, and then that QB struggles in year one and we go 6-11, will that coach be on the hot seat going into his second year in 2026?

You see where I'm going with this right? I feel like we've become the pre-Stefanski Cleveland Browns or the pre-Campbell Lions. We're now firing coaches every two years. One of the staples of a losing franchise.

I'm with you.  Daboll has to show he's learned a lesson from all of this and if he does, he'll likely be a better coach and the team will likely have a better record.  If Jones starts all year that record may still not be pretty but I wouldn't hold that entirely against him.  If they draft a rookie who spends the year developing and shows improvement as the year goes on the record might not end up pretty again but at least there's hope for the future.

Quote from: katkavage on January 16, 2024, 04:43:27 PMThey would have been much better off with Flores. But Daboll was the flavor of the day and came as a package with Schoen. Better if Schoen hired someone who he wasn't as familiar with and went through the extensive vetting and interviewing process. Daboll got the job soon after Schoen did. Not good.

To be fair... this time last year there wasn't a single question about whether they had the right coach or not. While this is obviously a terrible look for Daboll last year he dragged that crap team to not just a playoff appearance but also a win.  So let's see if he takes these lessons to heart and changes his behavior.

Regardless of what exactly was said and when, we know for sure Wink and Daboll outright hated each other.  And that's not a good look for the Giants.  Disagreements happen.  Even heated disagreements.  But this reached well above that if it got to the point that Wink just up and quit his job.

I like Daboll, he seemed to have done a great job last season winning all those games with this garbage squad, but this season was a big step back.  So he has plenty to learn from and I hope that he does.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: NGT- I really feel good for Goff

The super rare trade that worked out for both teams.  You almost never see that happen particularly when one team has already won a super bowl but I don't think either one of those teams would go back and undo that deal if given the chance.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: How do the packers do it
January 15, 2024, 11:30:31 AM
Trades.  Both times they managed to convince the Jets to take their hall of fame QB while they had another great QB waiting in the wings thus giving them assets and salary flexibility.  Now there is some luck involved because taking a QB mid to late first round is risky but they trust their scouts they trust their coaches to develop and they make the transition seemingly at the perfect time in both cases.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Thoughts on the Packers way?

It's a lot easier to sit your rookie QB when you have a hall of famer currently starting.  It's a lot harder to sit a rookie QB when the guy in front of him is Daniel Jones.  Should the Giants do it?  Maybe.  But you're gonna have to suffer through another 6 win season while a prized rookie watches from the bench.  How do you think THAT is gonna go over around these parts?

Maybe they should have done that with Jones while Eli was still around, but that lasted all of 2 games before people were yelling from the mountain tops to play the rookie.  And they did have dumb and dumber as the coach/GM at the time so maybe competent people ignore the noise and let Eli play out the string...but that's a LOT of noise to tune out while you're losing games.  Not to mention...Jones wasn't all that great in college either so there's no guarantee the results would have been any different if he had sat around waiting for a year.
