It's possible we underestimated how important Saquon Barkley is to his QB's comfort level in the pocket.  Have we seen any pass blocking grades from Breida/Brightwell, etc.?

Is this a real thread.

And just watch those little defender blobs instantly move to the offense's left off the snap....  wonder why....

And here's an interesting question- how in the hell is Campbell/slot the first read on this play with only 2 defenders clearly on that side of the field pre-snap?  Seems like common sense that Waller or Wandale would be the 1st read- ie, as soon as Waller has his leverage and the defender in his pocket and CB #27 moves Wandale's direction, the read should be straightforward.  I know he's got pressure, as always, but he's now a veteran QB who has studied and studied and studied...knows this play and has run it before in practice, etc.  I just don't get it.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on October 03, 2023, 03:12:46 PMI actually think fluker is a solid RT. Nothing special but dependable.

Dependable IS something special, nowadays.  Not just for us, either.  Crazy how bad OL play has become (or are the edges' athleticism finally winning out consistently across the league??).

Not sure what Jordan is trying to prove there.  To my eyes it's obvious that there are CLEARLY 3 better options than Parris Campbell in that moment- Wandale, Waller, and Hodgins- with Wandale and Waller both much better reads right in his line of sight.  Really no excusing this one.

Shmintz was dinged up earlier in that drive. Looked like an ankle or lower leg, anyway. Might have gotten worse on the push but he was already gimpy by that time.

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 03, 2023, 10:25:35 AMThe Giants kept Brightwell.  I remember his stupid shoving penalty that pinned the team deep after a punt.  Was that SMART or DEPENDABLE?

God don't get me started on Brightwell last night.  Such a ridiculously bad penalty and had a few other bonehead moves on top of bringing absolutely nothing in the run or pass pro game.  And let's not forget Eric Gray, who has been a 'hold your breath' returner every time but we still trot him out there and he almost ended the night even EARLIER last night.  What has Gray brought to the return game other than anxiety?  He may turn out to be a good runner but damn, just get someone back there to secure punts without giving us heart attacks.

Quote from: Rambo89 on October 03, 2023, 10:13:59 AMWhat we saw last night is what we've seen since 2019 when Barkley is out and not healthy this offense is downright awful.

And WEAK minded, might I add.  Which to me goes directly to coaching.  Last night's start felt eerily similar to the Dallas game- a good strong, move the chains type start on offense where things were going pretty well, even if just dinking and dunking down the field.  Then, adversity hits.  And after that the offense just couldn't get out of it's own way....this offense's psyche is so incredibly fragile and I have to think that's a coach+QB thing- I mean, where is the fire?

The phrase SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE kept going through my head last night.  This offense was not smart, not tough in the sense of picking yourself up when adversity hits..... and as our OL became an embarrassing patchwork AGAIN, surely nowhere near dependable.  Did anyone else notice Shmintz limping very early in that first series?  I picked it up immediately and my heart sank...because I just knew one injury on the IOL is all it would take for this offense to fall apart- they just can't recover.

OL OL OL OL OL OL.  You'd think if any organization should have known how important this is, it would be the NY Giants.  But here we are.  As always, it seems.  It almost seems like a cliche here now- you will never EVER get a read on your offensive players or have any kind of sustained success without a deep and capable (ie, mediocre) offensive line.  It begins and ends there.

So in retrospect, we should have known when we added Waller, Hyatt, even D Banks- at least 2 of those should have been OL.

Daniel Jones is not good.  But I contend still that he COULD have been good.  But- we'll never know and at this point it doesn't matter- the ghosts are here and they're here to stay.

Quote from: Rambo89 on October 02, 2023, 07:12:20 PMJust win don't care by what score or how ugly it is.

Couldn't agree more. Don't care what it looks like just win if you want to be relevant this year. Simple as that.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Is the issue expectations?
September 29, 2023, 11:21:26 AM
For me- my expectations were falsely heightened with all of the glowing camp reports about the offense.  The reports of the OL doing better, Waller being a true #1 target, our WR depth coming on strong, DJ looking better and more confident, etc.  Before those reports I was expecting a true growth year for all involved (which is how it's looking) rather than the potential to make some noise (still possible...but less likely for sure).

Just goes to show that training camp can be (and always seems to be) deceptive for the fans.

I actually made note of that same exact play, but my take was that Hawkins got into his own head on that one- ie, he was too worried about setting the edge and overthinking it instead of just shooting up and making the tackle.  That hesitation was all it took.  I'd hope getting used to the speed of the game would help him make that play better in the future.

So our big auction draft was last weekend....  $200 base (we are able to trade for auction dollars so I actually started with $212).  I had two keepers- Amon-Ra at $0 (last year I can keep him) and Pollard at $25.  Here is where my money went:

QB:
Daniel Jones - $8
Kenny Pickett - $0

RB:
Tony Pollard - $25
Derrick Henry - $52
Rashaad Penny - $2
Tyjae Spears - $5
Jaylen Warren - $10
Kareem Hunt - $1  (my last pick...really hoping to hear JT traded to Miami and Colts signing Kareem now)

WR:
Amon Ra - $0
Stefon Diggs - $49
T McLaurin - $20
Gabe Davis - $10
Quentin Johnston - $9

TE:
Darren Waller - $18

My own reaction- I like my team...only thing that went wrong in my draft was I was targeting D Pierce or K Walker as my RB3 but they got bid up to $35 each which was higher than I expected so I had to back off.  Other slight misstep is I like Keenan Allen better than McLaurin and they both went for $20....I picked up McLaurin assuming Allen would go higher later...ah well.

So, until either Hunt, Warren, or Penny step up a bit I'm hurting at my RB3 slot but other than that feel pretty good!  Let's gooooooo!!!

Quote from: nb587 on August 21, 2023, 03:16:52 PMI'm in a snake league, never did  fantasy before.  QBs get 4 points for TDs.  Should I put off taking a QB until later or look for a QB who can run earlier?  There are 12 people in this.  I pick 2nd

Personally I'd wait for a Geno Smith, Daniel Jones, Jared Goff.  Also at that #2 pick pay close attention to who the guy at #1 is drafting- he will wind up with 2 picks that are sandwiched between yours- of ten times at that 2 spot (and the 11 spot) you can predict what position will be available for the 2nd of your two picks each time around.  ie, if the guy at #1 loads up on WRs early you can predict later that he'll grab RBs, so you'd want to pick a RB in the slot right before he gets two cracks at it...and save a WR for your 2nd pick in the batch.  Hope that makes sense, it can be tricky if you've not ever done it before.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on August 21, 2023, 03:50:18 PMNeither is high on my target list but I don't disagree with any of your points.

The Jets' O line does worry me though, and Rodgers wasn't very good last year. I could see him blowing up this year, but there is risk with the pick IMO.

Tua should be a huge fantasy points per game guy but he just never stays on the field, and people question whether his career can continue if he gets concussed again.

Think both are good picks relative to the price, but I'd want a dependable solid backup like Goff or Cousins if I took one of those.

I'm wary of Rodgers because of the OL and he hasn't been great in awhile...and I don't think every great QB holds up like Brady did.  I'm also really wary of Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook. I think they'll both wind up over-drafted, again because of the OL, and I'm going to let someone else roll the dice on those guys this year.
