Rich: IMO the Giants acquired Brian Burns because he's the type of free agent you want to acquire and who generally is near-impossible to acquire (coming off rookie contract after being a top, or near-top player in the league). It's just that simple. Bob

I think that amount is about right.  What did he do... one play?  one series? I can't remember.  Bob

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 02, 2024, 12:39:00 PMBob, I would trade up for Maye.
Ed: Final Jeopardy lol....  Do you like Maye more/less/same than you liked Josh Allen (or don't you recall)?  Bob

Quote from: B1GBLUE on April 02, 2024, 09:50:03 AMI see a lot of people picked hyatt, but until we get this oline situation fixed, we cannot maximize his talents. what good is a deep threat if the qb is sacked before he makes it 20 yards downfield?
B1B: I consider OL (as a unit) more important than QB, even in the NFL... so I agree wholeheartedly. Bob

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 02, 2024, 11:06:59 AMThere are two QB's perfect for Daboll and the Giants. Maye and JJ McCarthy.
Ed (or anyone else who cares to participate): Great post. OK, then, you're Schoen... whom do you select...

(a) Both Maye and McCarthy are there AS WELL AS your top-ranked WR (probably Harrison, but who knows!)?
(b) Both Maye and McCarthy are there AS WELL AS your 2nd-ranked WR (whomever)?
(c) The lesser (in your view) of the two QB's is there (plus your top-ranked WR)?
(d) The lesser (in your view) of the two QB's is there (plus your 2nd-ranked WR)?

Quote from: Philosophers on April 01, 2024, 04:56:52 PMI think 100% the Giants will have a shot at MHJr at 6 because I believe Harbaugh wants to create the mindset the Chargers are a tough in the trenches type team so believe they will draft Joe Alt.  Book it Danno.  You heard it here first
Phil: This is my "perfect" scenario. Giants can still after that get a QB worth a shot, although they may not like any of the guys who'll still be there.  Bob

Big Blue Huddle / Re: First WR vs leading WR

I believe it is error to conclude from the original post that immediate success = better draft pick.

It depends to which team the player goes.

A great WR might go to a team with a veteran number-one WR, or to a team with a young (or lousy) QB.

There are many other reasons along the same line of thinking.

My point is that if Harrison (for example) doesn't shine next year, it will not mean he was a lousy draft pick.

If they're going QB in round one, the answer to the poll had better be Hyatt (whom I voted for). Bob

I'd be greatly surprised to learn real NFL people believe Maye is a better bet than Odunze. But I'll accept it. Bob

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 29, 2024, 02:45:38 PM...when Daboll took over... all the offensive skill position players talked about how challenging and difficult it was to learn Daboll's offense.
Rich: All good offenses are hard to learn. Daboll's offense relies more on WR's/TE's/RB's doing the right thing as much as it relies on the QB making the right read and correct run-pass decision.

One-read offenses are not predetermined. Although the QB is going only look in one place, it's up to him (at the line of scrimmage) to determine WHERE he should make that one look.

The decision rests on first deciding whether to run or pass. If he elects to pass, then he decides where to look.

It's all based on where the defenders line up and where the QB believes they'll be after the snap. NOTHING about this is simple, easy or uncomplicated. That's why they want and need a smart QB. Except on designed running plays, if the QB in Daboll's offense does anything other than hand the ball off or throw a pass, it means the QB read wrong or guessed wrong.

What makes Daboll's offense difficult is the same thing that makes it successful... it's hard to learn... which means it's hard for defenders to learn, too.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 30, 2024, 07:06:28 AMI tend to lean toward the WR.  The Giant's roster needs to start adding red-chip and blue-chip players.   The team can't be so QB-focused as they pass up an ideal chance to do so.

Admittedly, if a QB the Giants like falls to them at 6, I wouldn't fault them (because they believe that QB could be blue or red chip.

Still, if they go WR for the next few seasons, it will be easier to develop a QB, or any QB behind center will have an easier time of it.

Rich: I agree about leaning toward WR, but (as DB said) not necessarily because they should.

I think the odds of the one QB (whomever it is) that they would take falling to them are extremely low.

The odds of a WR whom they probably would take a better, but IMO not much better, UNLESS four QB's go above Pick Six, in which case they'll see two of the top three WR's there, and the only question will be whether they really like either of them (I'd say the odds of THAT are fairly high).

Quote from: Brooklyn Dave on March 30, 2024, 01:19:34 AMIf Schoen drafts a QB at 6 wouldn't it be difficult to fire him and Daboll because they could say we have a QB of our choice not one that was handed to us and we need time to develop him?
BDave: That's an interested aspect to this year's draft that had not occurred to me.

I think you're right, but I don't think Schoen/Daboll would draft a QB for that reason.

If they're worried about retaining their positions, they should be certain to draft a player who can help NOW.

Maybe they DO see a QB who can help now, and if so then they should/will take him and let him compete for the opening-day starting job (especially if Jones' health looks to make it unlikely he'll be ready on Day One.

But IMO the odds are that a high-first-round player is more likely to be at another position than QB, because the Giants have so many holes, multiple positions (other than QB) could choose who'll make an immediate difference, so I don't think they'll ever "force" a QB pick under any circumstances.

Quote from: Painter on March 29, 2024, 11:23:48 AMQuarterback- as it would be premature and, in most cases, too costly. More particularly, however, it's McCarthy
Larry: Nice post. Like you, I'll be hopeful (and maybe even thrilled) if they DO take a QB with Pick Six, because it will mean people who's lives are pro football (and who stand to get fired if they're wrong) truly believe in the guy they picked, which can't hurt for a team not known for fielding a dominant (or even good) offense. Quote from: madbadger on March 29, 2024, 12:34:35 PMIt would be helpful to know who is saying they doubt he can play the X in the NFL and why. Everyone has an opinion, myself included, but when it comes to draft prospects 99% of them are either uninformed or ill informed. Those concerns could be well founded but he played the X at LSU and played it quite well in the conference with the most athletic corners.

madb: I was not referring to any of us.  It was a few (variously) so-called draft "experts" whose evaluations I read as well as a few guys in videos Rich (Mighty) posted here over the past few months. Bob

I know I am old, but this reinforced it. I believe I do at least 12 of these things, AND like that fact.

Lenn: Face it, you're not just old... you're ancient.  =))

Luckily, you have a lovely younger wife to look at (instead of a mirror).

Please say hi to her for me.
