Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants and the Alex Smith model

Quote from: Dgoodmantrublu on September 26, 2023, 01:24:36 PMI firmly believe the most apt comparison for Daniel Jones is Alex Smith and you can win with him. However, you won't get to where you need to be because he is too timid of a QB. This is a very deep QB class coming up. I believe the Giants should trade up for a QB. Start Jones next season and let the QB learn behind him and then move on. Or let Jones pursue a trade. That is the best way forward to build a team that can compete to win a Super Bowl.

@Dgoodmantrublu I agree with your post and assessment. Alex Smith is a great comparison.

Daniel Jones is a good QB, as was Smith. Jones is a much better runner, Smith probably a slightly better passer so it about evens out. But while these guys are good QBs they limit the ceiling the team has.

I would be in favor of the approach you suggested. This lets them compete and build for another season and a half, and then they can work towards taking that next leap for the team. A trade for DJ is unlikely but they can get out easy enough if they decide that is the best move. Hopefully he breaks out but after 5 years I think what you see is what you get, but I am holding out hope that he can put it all together and step up to where he needs to be. If he does that makes things that much easier with him at QB.

But in all likelihood he has that Alex Smith ceiling

I don't see how anyone can expect this game to be easy. They beat our ass last year, Richie James gone helps, but they are still a talented team.

As tough as it is, they do need the win. They likely are not beating Buffalo and Miami. This game will show us what 2023 Giants are made of.

Okay, so you saw Herbert on 51 pass plays with 18 total pressures (per PFF)

You saw Jones on 38 pass plays with 23 total pressures (per PFF)

I am not sure .35 pressures per pass play is equal to .61 pressures per pass play

You seem to be missing the point

If he isn't pressured on those other 15 plays and receivers are wide open on some of those plays, he has to strike and make the plays when he has them.

If he isn't pressured in those instances the OL did their job on those plays, if receivers are open, they also did their job on those plays

At that point, if DJ doesn't make those plays, that is solely on him and no one else. Can't blame coaching for DJs faults on a play he has a pocket and open receivers, what more does he need? You can't scheme anything else at that point.

Quote from: Rambo89 on September 26, 2023, 09:34:33 AMI watched a bit of the Chargers Vikings game and saw Justin Herbert under pressure for most of the game while at the same time making plays.  That's the difference between an elite QB and an average one.

I agree, that also does not mean DJ is bad or not a good QB, cause he is a good QB.

But the great ones makes things happen, we definitely have had missed opportunities left on the field

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 26, 2023, 09:17:50 AMPart of the problem is when the pass protection is putrid, it forces a QB to have a very short internal clock.  So if DJ's clock is set to 2 seconds, it's going to result in plays being missed.

Like I said, the plays I have seen he had time to get to ball to them.

If his internal clock is messed up from previous plays and can't shake it off, or forces a pass after 2 seconds cause of protection on previous plays/games, that is strictly a Daniel Jones issue in that instance if the protection is there on a given play.

We can't blame the OL for DJ not making plays in the times they actually give him a pocket, even if it's inconsistent, when plays are there he has to make the throws.

Quote from: Trench on September 25, 2023, 09:28:57 PMSkinner today broke down a couple Jones plays where he had open receivers and didn't make the correct read and/or take the shot to Hyatt. I personally believe he is too locked on them but it could be he isn't reading quick enough. In any event, Skinner explains what type adjustment can be made within these plays. Let's hope Jones can do it.

I believe he can.

I have definitely seen a few plays with Hyatt and Waller wide open and he never even looked their way, plays are definitely being left on the table, even with time to throw.

Quote from: BluesCruz on September 25, 2023, 01:30:08 PMIm losing faith in this coaching staff

Limeaux?  if it aint broke why fix it?
no run plays
no gadget plays
no moving pocket

Wink did a decent job but Daboll/Kafka was a play call disaster

stubborn, stick to the proccess, packages?   "didnt use Hyatt because it did not come up????  What the heck???
no mid game adjustments

terrible, just pathetic. Joe Judge could have done better

I was semi with you until the Joe Judge comment

Quote from: jgrangers2 on September 25, 2023, 01:05:26 PMI had Achane on my bench as well. Obviously can't kick ourselves over that because who saw that coming from the Dolphins? I did have Davante Adams, which lessened the blow a bit of having a 50 point player on my bench.

Davante, Bill D/ST and Deebo carried me this week, Lawrence and Ridley stunk it up so I got lucky and those guys bailed me out.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on September 25, 2023, 12:56:27 PMI have Achane (drafted him), but I didn't have him in yest! Killer.

Christian Watson was a brutal pick by me. Took him in the third round. Hasn't played yet. I was bullish on him as he tore it up down the stretch last year as a rookie. Hopefully he comes back soon.

Someone cut Dalton Kincaid in my league. I realize he hasn't done much as of yet, but I could see him developing a bigger role as the year goes on. Want to try to get him.

Josh Palmer and Rashee Rice are both available in my league. I'm only 9th on the wire list this year, but think both are worth grabbing. Mike Williams looks likely done for the season.

Williams tore his ACL and confirmed done for the year, he is worth a pickup for sure. I went with Johnston due to the draft profile, will be interesting to see how snaps and targets play out for them both.

I drafted Quentin Johnston for a situation like this, and have the top waiver to grab Achane.

Looking pretty good right now after a big win. I don't expect that from Achane, but I think he can still get 10-15 points in a given week, and then potentially explode if Mostert (when really) gets hurt.

I would have no issue with his words if he at least provided what the real reason is

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Jimmy G vs DJ
September 25, 2023, 10:27:48 AM
Probably Jones, Jimmy G is made of glass, is older, and has been bouncing around a bit for a reason. Talent wise they are somewhat similar probably in the same tier. But DJ is higher in that tier

Quote from: Philosophers on September 24, 2023, 09:44:33 PMAll I know is I had Achane on my two fantasy teams and today he exploded for 51 points.  Ouch!!!

With his 18 carries for 203 yards, I think he has now played himself into the lineup more

I have the top waiver this week, I'm definitely adding him. He won't do that again, but can easily get plenty of 10-15pt games and potentially more, especially with Nosterts i jury history

Quote from: Trench on September 24, 2023, 02:01:12 PMSimple question for us all to ponder:

If a team offered a 1st round pick straight up for Daniel Jones, would you take it?

If the answer is yes then I think we have our answer as to whether or not he is elite.

I would no question. Depending on the pick it is wither a QB pick or trade ammo to get one. In this scenario the Giants were done with him anyway. Win win in that scenario

Kinda hard to be this excited after they beat us 40-0 with the overrated coach and not prime time qb
