Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants Hire Bricillo as OL Coach

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 12, 2024, 11:33:10 AMThese were the top comments (in Reddit, people can give Karma points for a response, and they show up first).  I didn't see any negative comments and the ones I left out were more internal discussions about the Raider's own coaching future and AP.

Speaking of AP...there's a DC job with his name written allllll over it if it wants!  Perhaps that's a discussion for another thread though.

Bricillo at this stage in the game seems like a good choice.  He's going to have a lot of high draft picks to work with so the raw tools are there.  Can he save Evan Neal's career? If he does he should have a job for life around here.

Quote from: Philosophers on January 12, 2024, 10:07:43 AMMaybe I am wrong but in spite of this spat with coaches, other than Xavier McKinney's outbursts about wanting to get paid, it seems very quiet among the players.  I don't see any uprising with players protesting Dabs.  They seem to be aligned under him.  Am I wrong on that?

McKinney made it clear he was not even considering re-signing with the Giants if Wink was still around.  Now it's at least a possibility that he comes back.  To take that kind of stance would likely indicate he wasn't alone with that distaste of his DC.

While it's hardly any sort of substantive analysis but from what I can tell Bills fans couldn't wait to be rid of Bobby Johnson and Raiders fans appear to be pretty pissed off that Bricillo is gone.  Doesn't mean much of anything but it's gotta be better than fans escorting a guy out the door the way we just did with Bobby Johnson.

Quote from: Messiah717 on January 11, 2024, 10:29:36 PMAnother rough performance against St. Louis.  You hate to overreact but things are unraveling here.

They've lost too many players to injury. Last night even Mika didn't play though at least he just had the flu. Chytil may be out for the season I don't know what Kakko's timetable is but they need him back. When Vesey is skating with the top 6 you've got issues. They'll probably have to make a trade at the deadline.

Quote from: RelaxTension on January 10, 2024, 07:55:31 AMThere should be no surprise that Hyatt needs some time to develop.
Will these coaches and player be able to accomplish this has some hope due to his catching ability and speed.

Get him a QB and watch what happens.  Not even a special QB.  Just something hovering around respectable.

Quote from: kartanoman on January 08, 2024, 11:15:38 PMWow, Demco had an all-world game against the Rangers and the defense couldn't hang with Vancouver's big boys on offense. An outstanding effort by Trocheck (two goals) was wasted.

In reality, the Canucks were opportunistic and their goal scoring prowess was on full display for all to see. Seeing Igor literally turned into a pretzel on one of the goals left me a believer that their +/- goal differential is no fluke.

Not sure how to assess the Rangers' performance tonight. They were getting the puck on goal with some excellent chances. Demco played out of his mind tonight. In contrast, Igor lost his confidence early and was hung out to dry as his defense looked lost at times. But the truth is that Vancouver's offensive stars put on a clinic tonight and the Rangers tried hard to respond but couldn't.

Off to Saint Louis and another gauntlet challenge.

Peace!

Demco was outrageously good.  That could have easily been a 5 or 6 goal game for the Rangers too.  Sometimes things just don't go your way.  I didn't think the Rangers played poorly but could not hang with Demco on that night.

Quote from: uconnjack8 on January 09, 2024, 09:52:48 AMI see Lawrence as somewhat disappointing.   It may be that my expectations were too high, but I thought within a couple of years he'd be in the conversation as a top 5 QB.

The loss in week 18 was another example of making mistakes that couldn't be overcome.

I saw him a number of times this year and thought his accuracy was below par in key situations (balls sailing over the head of open receivers in the endzone e.g.).

I dont see him as a bust and think he is a top half of the league starter.  Just thought his entrance to the league would be more like Burrows or even Josh Allen.  Both of those guys were far better by year 3 IMO.  Still the book isn't written on him yet.

Lawrence missed a game and was banged up even when he came back.  I'm completely convinced he was playing hurt through the end of the season.  Having said that, he's definitely disappointed compared to his pre-draft hype of which I was very much a part of, but he's significantly better than Jones could ever dream of being.

Quote from: Stringer Bell on January 08, 2024, 08:04:12 PMYes, and it's not close.

They also have a better QB throwing them the ball though.  If you swapped teams I imagine Hyatt/Robinson put up similar or better numbers.  If you simply swapped QBs on each team...same deal in my opinion.  Those guys in Houston are good, but these guys in NY are also good whenever they are given a chance to show it.  Which this season was extremely rare.

Quote from: zephirus on January 08, 2024, 12:25:36 PMIf Daniel Jones weren't carrying massive cap implications I'd be inclined to agree with you.  But the reality is that he's on the team next year.  Drafting a QB and having a $40m a year backup is probably the fastest way for Schoen to get a pink-slip and be shown the door.  I also simply disagree that there's a huge disparity in play between Jones and Taylor.  I absolutely think any game the Giants won with DeVito or Taylor could have been won with Jones.

I don't like the prospect of the Giants rolling into next season with Jones more than many here, but it's a reality that we need to accept because that's how the NFL is designed.  The Giants made a big mistake extending him, and drafting another QB in the first doesn't materially help the team, it probably hamstrings it by expending valuable draft capital, creating a QB controversy, and tying up cap space.

People think that going into next season with Jones as starter is like "doubling down" on idiocy.  It's not.  It's probably the best option we have in order to field a competitive team in the near future without hamstringing our cap and introducing more volatile change with wholesale personnel changes. I'm not espousing "patience" with Jones, I'm espousing "prudence" with regards to team culture and stability.  The prudent thing to do is draft BPA, see how things fall, and show Jones the door next off-season when that action doesn't completely decimate our cap situation, which for those of you with short memories, is exactly how we got into this mess in the first place.

I get what you're saying about the 40 million but you can get away with a 40 million dollar backup if your starter is on a rookie deal. And it would only be for one season.  It's an expiring contract after next season.

Maybe Jones could have won those games but not if he was going to play the way he did to start the season where he stubbornly refused to throw more than 5 yards down the field.  And it wasn't the OL because Taylor and even Devito found ways to throw downfield from time to time.  Jones didn't.

Jones' is going to be on the roster next year we can all agree on that.  There's no way to get rid of him.  So whether the Giants draft a QB at 6 or a DE that guy is going to be paid the same money so it doesn't change the finances for next season.

I would certainly not want to trade a million picks to move up to like #1 for Caleb Williams because the team isn't good enough for that, but to move from 6 to 5 so the Chargers don't sell Jayden Daniels out from under them?  I might be willing to do that.  If QBs go 1-2-3 then I think they go BPA and hope that one of Penix/Nix/McCarthy are around in Round 2 and take one of them there.

If you wait until next year you're going to need to have a Panthers level season in order to get him because of how shallow that class is.  There might be a great prospect that separates himself next season, there usually is, but in order to get that guy you're going to have to be truly and completely terrible and even though hope nobody else is worse or else trade multiple future first round picks to get a guy.  This year they had a real shot of just getting into the top 4 and having the chance to get a really great prospect.  They may well have a shot in the 2nd round to get a prospect as good as anybody currently slated to come out next season.  So no, if they do need a new QB they should go get one this year if possible.  That doesn't mean mortgage the farm to get Caleb Williams.  That ship sailed with a 3 game winning streak.

Whoever the best available OL coach is the Giants need to do whatever it takes to get that guy.  Talk to former OL who can add input as to who the best OLs are right now and start poaching those staffs.  Something has to be done.  There's no reason that Will Hernandez and Feliciano can go elsewhere and look like absolute studs but here they couldn't figure out a basic DL stunt.  There's no reason a prospect the level of Evan Neal should look like a damn turnstile out there.  To me this team is closer than we might think provided that OL gets coached up properly and they get a real QB.  Easier said than done but those are the things that need to get done immediately if not sooner.

Quote from: zephirus on January 08, 2024, 11:22:35 AMThere's still too many outstanding questions to understand the direction the Giants should take at #6.  What are the Bears doing with Justin Fields?  Who is taking over in Foxboro (if not Belichick) and what is the QB situation like after free agency?

I've asserted for some time that it's unlikely the Giants go QB in the draft and I think the finally 5-6 games landed in a way that will only reinforce that ideology within the front office.  There's too much money tied up in Daniel Jones with no easy "out" until next year.  The Giants showed some scrap with backup qbs, realistically could have (and should have) beaten both the Jets, Bills and Rams.  We had a host of injuries.  I think Schoen and the front office will view things through the light of "lost season" moreso than "lost team".  They'll look to augment the existing team and shore up weak areas and roll the dice with Jones again.

With the Giants at 6, I think you let the draft come to you and see what happens.  Getting additional draft capital by trading down should always be a priority, especially if you can land first round picks in subsequent years.  BPA seems the order of the day.

Wouldn't the last couple weeks only fortify the belief that they need a QB?  The minute they got even semi-competent QB play the team became watchable.  Even frisky.  Imagine if they got ACTUAL competent QB play.  And there's no guarantee a rookie would provide that, but there's absolute a guarantee that Jones/Devito won't.  So I'd rather roll the dice on a top rookie prospect.  If they can't get one of the Big 3, I think whichever QB is left in Round 2 they should pull the trigger then.  Even if it's Nix or Penix or McCarthy.  I'd rather take my chances with them than tie the franchise to Jones any further than next season.

Quote from: GordonGekko80 on January 08, 2024, 10:28:39 AMRealistically, from the top 6 teams in the draft, there's only NE and WSH who will want to draft a QB.

Unless another team moves up... but that's a tough bet to take.

1. Chicago Bears (via Carolina Panthers)
2. Washington Commanders
3. New England Patriots
4. Arizona Cardinals
5. Los Angeles Chargers
6. New York Giants
7. Tennessee Titans
8. Atlanta Falcons
9. Chicago Bears
10. New York Jets
11. Minnesota Vikings
12. Denver Broncos
13. Las Vegas Raiders
14. New Orleans Saints
15. Indianapolis Colts
16. Seattle Seahawks
17. Jacksonville Jaguars
18. Cincinnati Bengals

I definitely expect Denver to move up in the draft.

The problem is the Chargers.  Not that they are going to take a QB but that everybody in the league knows they won't and the Giants will.  So a team like the Falcons if they can't get up to #1 or #2 they'll just go there to get ahead of the Giants which would be significantly less expensive than going to the top.  Giants are in a bit of trouble as far as getting in position to draft one of those big 3 QBs.  They may have to try and trade with the Chargers themselves if Daniels makes it to 5.

Had they lost today I think they only would have moved to 5th. In a 4 person draft... Screw it I say it's worth it to kick the crap out of the eagles for just one slot. If the Pats chargers and Cards had won I'd be pretty annoyed though.

That better be in 5th pick in Round 2 cause in Round 1 that's not gonna be good for business.  Personally I think there are only 3 QBs worth taking in the top 5 right now and then about 3 more worth late 1st early 2nd round range.
