Big Blue Huddle / Re: The 2024 QB Class
April 02, 2024, 05:50:44 PM
Quote from: Stringer Bell on April 02, 2024, 01:54:09 PMI will break my TV if the Giants waste a pick on Bo Nix. He's only 2.5 years younger than DJ and has 0% chance of being a franchise QB.

His ceiling is significantly lower than any of the other top QB prospects.
Not a fan of Nix either. But he has more potential than Drew Lock.

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 02, 2024, 12:41:28 PMThe Drew Lock signing might take Nix, Penix, and below off the table for the Giants.
Penix and Nix have potential to be starters. Lock is locked in as a backup.

Right now these prospects are getting dissected every way possible by countless scouts and pundits like Simms. As you dissect, you will always find flaws. That's not to say those flaws are not fixable or should warn a team from drafting the prospect. But let's take a deep breath and hope that Schoen and company know what they are doing when they evaluate these prospects. And let's admit none of us know a thing about how to evaluate at the same level. It's easy to blog or post about someone with no consequences. There are big consequences in the decision Schoen makes later this month. I'll go with his evaluation right now, for better or worse. Time will tell whether his decision was a good or bad one.

Like everyone on this board, I'm not QB scout expert. If the Giants took Maye at sixth, I would have to trust that Schoen and company did their due diligence and decided he was the guy for them. I would trust that they took him not just because the Giants need a QB, but that they really thought he could succeed as a Giant. But in my not very educated opinion, I would prefer Daniels and/or McCarthy and possibly even Penix over Maye. What do I know? I just know the Giants desperately need a QB this year and not to start in September but for the future.

I'd be happy with Odunze. Unhappy that QB hell continues indefinitely.

Quote from: Ed Vette on March 30, 2024, 08:53:15 AMAt almost 6'5 Maye will fill in and bulk up his 230 frame but I don't see him doing some of the Superman stunts that Josh Allen does. Allen had basic mechanics issues that were obviously correctable. Maye is working on his feet and strides as evidenced in his Pro Day, although he doesn't have that extra hop step a couple of QBs have a bad habit of in this draft. He's going to need to shorten his wind-up at the next level on the quick game. What he excells at is he throws a nice catchable ball and adjusts angles at different levels. His arm on deep throws would have Jalin Hyatt salivating if he were drafted. They would have a good chance of holding up in the fall winds and cold of the Meadowlands. He reminds me more of Andrew Luck than Josh Allen. Go back and watch some AL film. Beautiful angled passes with a soft touch at all levels.
I was listening to The Athletic podcast about these QBs. They mentioned that Maye was a three sport athlete in high school and didn't give up those sports to hone the QB craft like many do now, working with coaches and going to camps from 6th grade on. Not sure if that means anything here but I found it interesting and refreshing.

Number one of course. A QB is a necessity. Without one the Giants continue to flounder no matter how good the other players turn out to be.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 29, 2024, 07:16:17 AMCaleb Williams-  Diva combined with helicopter dad has disaster written all over it, no matter how much talent he has

Jayden Daniels-  We are trying to move on from an injury-prone QB, and I think Daniels is going to be injured often and seriously in the NFL.  He was 210 at his Pro Day after refusing to be weighed at the Combine; I suspect his real weight is closer to 200 (maybe less).  Worse, not only is he light, he has a reckless running style that allows defenders to hit him hard.  He got away with that in college, but NFL players are bigger and faster.
You might be right, you might be wrong. Despite his size, Jones's running style is abysmal. So size doesn't matter if you don't know how to slide and protect your body. I don't know enough about Daniels to say if he does or doesn't have a good running style. That he hasn't been injured, even in big time college play, is a good sign and doesn't mean he will get pummeled in the NFL.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants scouting QBs hard
March 28, 2024, 03:57:23 PM
Quote from: MightyGiants on March 28, 2024, 10:16:05 AMThe challenge for NYG to get a quarterback is twofold.  First, they need to fall in love with a prospect in this draft.  All the prospects in this year's class have warts that could prove problematic.

Then after they fall in love with one (or more), they need to be able to acquire the prospect.  Sitting at 6 makes that a challenge in a year where so many teams need a QB.

Warts come with the territory. Good luck finding one in a decade that doesn't have any.

Quote from: Philosophers on March 28, 2024, 09:47:26 AMI believe this is way more than just lining up prospects for their draft board.  This feels like the Manning year where they want to firmly stamp the next 10 years with a new Giants QB.  I think they will do whatever to get their guy as Accorsi did.
I think they believe they are close enough that they they can get their guy. It's now or never for both Schoen and Daboll. In the perfect world they would have gotten their guy two years ago but there wasn't anyone out there and couldn't give up on Jones so quickly.

Yes. Penix more than Nix. The Giants must get one of the top 5 QBs, preferably the one they want most not named Caleb Williams, who they won't get at the price it would take. They cannot afford to kick the can down the road on QB. They are within range this year and must get one. Receivers are much easier to find.

I'm sure Nabers would be fine and could thrive if and when the Giants get a QB.

Quote from: londonblue on March 27, 2024, 08:04:29 AMThe Giants history drafting mid round QB prospects is hideous. If there is one thing I desperately do not want us to do in a draft where we have only six picks and roster holes everywhere is to spend a valuable pick on a R3 or 4 QB who will most likely compete with De Vito to make the roster year one when you can regularly find early career starters at lower valued positions in those rounds.
I agree. Go for it or not. Don't try to think you can get lucky and find a Brady or Purdy in the later rounds.

Quote from: T200 on March 25, 2024, 10:52:55 AMI agree about roster development.

But give me the top 3 QB over the top 3 WR. If a defense doubles or otherwise neutralizes the top WR, the QB has other options. If the QB is having an off day, there's very little the top WR is going to be able to do to get that offense going.
Top receivers are nice to have. The Giants can draft one of the greats. But that player will have little impact without a star QB or even a franchise QB to throw to them. Makes sense for the Chargers to draft one. Even Arizona. But not the Giants at the expense of a QB.

They are all good, but like the very good Garrett Wilson and so many others, they don't win games. A QB is needed to do that.
