Jones has guys to go to he's just choosing to go to the easy check down rather than take shots downfield.

Quote from: Philosophers on October 08, 2023, 01:13:48 PMHow do you not throw to a guy past the first down marker?  Disgusted with seeing this.

And he had the X receiver down the sideline.  I'd rather him take a shot there even if it goes for an incomplete you at least show them you are willing to take shots.  Either way wouldn't have been a first down but at least you are trying to get a first down rather than checking down.

Think if this season does go south a fair amount of coaches on Daboll's staff won't be back next season

Quote from: katkavage on October 08, 2023, 08:38:38 AMNo surprise. High ankle sprains are a minimum of a month.

Yeah, I don't why anyone is surprised it's a 4+ week injury.  Seems like the Giants know he's going to be out but are playing games with their opponent making them wonder if Barkley will play.

Quote from: Philosophers on October 07, 2023, 05:08:12 PMYeah 6-11 record and 15 TDs passsing will lead to a change.

If the Giants do that and that's all Jones ends up with they should be in the position to draft a QB next spring.  That's all hypothetical though.

I remember last year at the trade deadline there being a lot of complaints that the Giants didn't trade for Claypool.  Thank goodness they let the Bears make that mistake.

Quote from: Giant Jim on October 07, 2023, 04:40:51 PMPlayers that may not be productive 2 or 3 seasons form now. In Jones case, how much confidence do you think he'll have playing behind this terrible line another 2 seasons? Will he be damaged? Coaches are for another thread.

No matter what if Jones doesn't improve upon his overall 2022 season in either 2023 or 2024 he'll be gone after 2024.

Quote from: DragonSoul on October 07, 2023, 03:33:36 PMYou compared him, so thanks. You compare them with similar situations. Except JB has a top #1 wr and also a #2 & his line has been bad, but not as bad as the Giants.

Who knows, maybe when or if they fix the line and DJ isn't shellshocked by then; then if he plays as he has then I'm all onboard moving on. It's called giving the guy a fair chance and unlike many people, putting things into context.

I want to win as bad as anyone, but I am not fickle as many are and I observe & use context. If I felt DJ was a problem while the oline was at least average then I'd want him gone like I did with Brown, Graham and Kannel where I was correct on them early on as I was with KC & Eli being good for us. I think DJ can be good if given a reasonable opportunity. If not then I'd be wrong & want him gone. But with how bad both our oline & wrs are atm, that is far from doing justice with any semblance of a fair assessment.

His rookie year he can hit any throw. Last year he showed he can be accurate with the giants wrs having if not the worst separation vs defenders than one of the worst. So he can hit any shot & be accurate. Yet the line greatly regressed even from last year. Partially injuries, partially talent.

So comeback to me when our oline and wr core isn't dead last in ratings. Thanks!

I didn't bring up Burrow.  I don't think it's fair to compare a QB at Burrow's level to Daniel Jones.  Again I've mentioned the QB's Jones should be comparable too that if you prop them up with the team around him rather than relying on him to make those around him better he could see success the way Alex Smith did in his career.

As for Giant QB's of the past I don't believe Jones is in the Brown, Graham and Kannel group but is similar to Kerry Collins in terms of how good he is compared to the other QB's in the league.  The problem with Jones is his inability to be instinctive and adjust to the league and how it plays him.  The league adjusted after his rookie season which wasn't as good as it was made out to be.  The overall production that year was inflated by 3-4 good games while the rest were mediocre which is typical for a rookie NFL QB.  After his rookie season he was mediocre the following 2 seasons before Daboll came in and was able to scheme around his weaknesses.

Now that Jones has gotten paid expectations are higher and we're seeing that his limitations can't be masked without the team around him propping him up.  He has weapons in the passing game but with no run game with Barkley hurt and the offensive line being bad Jones isn't talented enough to carry the load like elite QB's do consistently (with the occasional bad game).

Both have a ton of ability.  They both saw significant increases in their snap counts from the San Francisco game to the Seattle game.  You would expect that they will continue to see their snap counts increase as the season moves along.  What you hope is that they are fed the ball to make plays more often than they were Monday night.

This was clarified the next day that there was a miscommunication on the play call in where the Giants did call for a pass and Jones misheard it and thought it was a called run play.  Had they called a run play she would be correct about the lack of confidence the Giants coaches have in Jones.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on October 07, 2023, 11:40:26 AMI still don't understand what an injured elite Qb has to do with the discussion. So thank you for posting this.

Think using Derek Carr as an example of a drop off is more relevant when it comes to Jones than a QB Jones will never be.

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 07, 2023, 10:11:59 AMThe drop-off was more drastic for Burrow, but factually speaking there was a major dropoff in Jones' performance from last season.   To be willing to entertain excuses for one and not the other simply is lacking in intellectual consistency

Sure in Burrow's case the drop off is from an Elite QB the prior two full seasons.  With Jones it's a case of a from off from an Average QB the prior season.
