Quote from: coggs on November 28, 2023, 09:53:53 PMIf they didnt sign Jones and the season unfolded like it has, there would be a HUGE uproar about how Schoen needs to go.  He would not have ANY support among the fanbase,
For sure.

Quote from: LennG on November 28, 2023, 09:13:53 PMI think, to a man, we all agree the Giants overpaid for Jones. Jones and his agent played hardball and Schoen (be it from Mara) crumbled and paid the piper. Myself, I would have drawn a line in the sane, tell Jones and his agent this is what we are paying and if you don't want to play here, so be it. Does anyone really believe, that if Jones had walked another team would have paid him what the Giants did? I seriously doubt it.

At the time, I don't think Taylor was the option. We had just won a playoff game and why would we even think of starting a new season, a hopeful season, with a perennial backup? Was there even a Plan B if Jones had walked or were we always going to pay him?
Again, those of us who were never enamored with Jones would have taken that money we were going to pay him and spent it on the best possible QB out there. We might have had a shot at Jimmy G or whoever else was available.

Personally, Jones played hardball and we caved. I really do not believe he would have walked as he knew his best value was right here in NY, and even if he held out, he would have signed eventually to a Giant-favored contract.
Good point that the fans would have understood an offer less than what they gave him. Where would you have drawn the line? A one year or multi year and how much?

Quote from: Bob In PA on November 28, 2023, 09:33:08 PMEd: The second play covered in the video is Eli to Manningham against the Pats in the Super Bowl.

Interesting that it happened against the same team, same head coach defensive specialist.

Yes it WAS a great throw. Takes guts for a rookie; made the safety "late" with his eyes early in the play.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Tommy or Tyrod?

Quote from: Jaime on November 28, 2023, 06:55:58 PMI'm stoked to see the unrealized upside of Tommy D. I'm in the Camp that believes Tommy can offer us more than just being a Backup :goteam:
It's possible Jaime. I was hoping to see him avoid the sacks and hit some of the open options but upon reviewing the all-22, he really did have a pretty good game.

All the issues are correctable with experience. He processes well, has a decent arm and release. He commands the huddle. He isn't afraid to take a hit to deliver a pass. He moves within the pocket and can roll out and pass on the run and we'll all know his leadership and intangibles.

It's just too early to declare anything right now but as you say, the potential is certainly there. He had too many naysayers to begin with that have been stubborn to give him any credit, in order to save face or because it's just too damn incredible for it to happen.

One game at a time.

The Giants should have beaten the Jets and they may have beaten some of the teams they are about to face, which may have given them confidence but the hypothetical kicks in.

Would Jones have gotten injured and been out for the season?

Would Tommy DeVito have ever seen the field and how would that impacted next season. I think we need to see how he gets up to speed and if he can beat a good team.

One common statement made by many fans was that it was a mistake to pay Daniel Jones. Some at the time and many more after his poor performances this season and the injuries, one of which ended his season.

If they chose to move on...

Would they have traded up for Anthony Richardson? I don't think there was any way they could have gotten Young or Stroud. Would they have picked Levis or would they have signed an FA or started Tyrod Taylor and then put off drafting a QB.

How would any of those decisions have changed the course of this season and the future of the team?

All hypothetical and the answers subjective but did Schoen make the best decision at the time?

A nice breakdown of good plays and throws by TD, bad plays by TD, good and bad play designs. Totally unbiased.

Quote from: Doc16LT56 on November 28, 2023, 02:01:20 PMTo Bob and anyone else who may think it's the wrong time to draft a QB:

There's never going to be a time when you have all of the players you need (OL, WR, RB) and can then go shopping for a QB. It doesn't work like that in the real world. A lot of the players you think will be good won't work out. Some of the players you think are working out will get hurt. There's never going to be a perfect time to draft a QB.

On top of that, you don't really know when you'll have an opportunity to get one. When the opportunity presents itself you have to take it regardless of what the rest of the roster looks like.

Yes, luck is part of the equation. You're going to have to hope your skill and preparation meet at the right opportunity to get lucky.

No one said building a great team would be easy. The problem the Giants face right now is trapping themselves in QB hell by lying to themselves about the quality of their players, especially the QB. Cut your losses and move on. Give the next generation of players a chance to succeed where this group of core players failed.

Daniel Jones and the players around him have failed many times over. Although the team is stuck with him on the roster for one more year, we should all be clear eyed in understanding that he isn't the answer and neither are Tyrod Taylor nor DeVito.

This organization needs a major infusion of talent at the QB position. If this year's draft gives us an opportunity to get a guy, then great, we have a shot. If it doesn't, then we're stuck in QB hell for at least another year.
In a perfect world, they would want to have an established OLine and a couple of weapons before drafting a QB, but you're right. They will study, scout, and interview every QB in this Draft that they believe has potential and may be right for them. If they find the right QB and it won't devastate the next two drafts, they should get him. If that QB is not there or there are doubts, then they have to pass. There is always a FA out there they can sign for one year. To move up it's going to cost them a second this year and a third and next year's first and second or third depending on how far they have to move up. Of course they may have their guy fall to them.

I think they figured they would give Jones two years and if he improved in 2023 they would give him 2024 and then decide, If they trade or cut him, then would draft a QB in 2025. After this year's performance and the injuries, I'm sure they are taking a hard look at this class.

As for Jones, if he's healthy they will play him and see how the season unfolds. He could be trade bait for a team that needs a QB if he plays well and they have their guy in the wings. It's too bad because if he even played like Tommy did this past game and he got injured, they had a shot at trading him.

I hold back if there is a word or two that can go two ways. Like today, Bag and pack.

The large caps may be loud enough for Schoen to hear because he's the man you have to convince. I'm sure he's well aware of that. But let's say for example that he trades down and still picks a QB like Nix, McCarthy or Maye who has not played up, later in the first or early second round. And DJ with perhaps better players winds up having a great season and the Giants lead the Division, will Daboll pull Jones late in the season to test his Draft QB?
