Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants Done with Daniel Jones?
March 05, 2024, 01:52:50 PM
I am willing to add quality young players then reach for a qb. Yes, the challenge is maybe next year's qb class might not be great (we'll see) but adding a star wr and using our picks to address other areas of need is my prescription.

And Jones has a much better chance to finish his lame duck season.

So a choice of qbs? One a move up (3rd qb Maye),the other a young pup (JJ)?? I don't have a conviction on Maye or JJ, although it may be the direction ultimately.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 04, 2024, 08:27:30 PMI'm certainly not saying he was very good. I know he wasn't. There was definitely well worse starting QB play out there though (no need to name names).

I do think there will be some sort of market for him given nobody other than the team that cut him owes him anything. I'll be surprised if he is unemployed come week one.

Dave,

I understand. Meant well. Wilson did play much better than the year prior but eventually drove Payton nuts in his declining arc.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 04, 2024, 08:00:49 PMFalcons, Steelers, Titans, and Raiders come to mind as potential possibilities.

Wilson wasn't all that terrible last year. He had a 98 rating (8th best in the league), and 26 TD passes with 8 picks. Imagine all the confetti that would get thrown if Jones put up those precise numbers.

Dave,

Titans have Levis in his sophomore season and seem set. Falcs seem to want Cousins. So the Steelers and Raiders... maybe left?

Pickens is just as bad as it gets and Mason Rudolph is a career backup. Pitt seems like an opportunity.
To the Raiderrz? Could be as a last resort; no?

Wilson's numbers were a bit deceiving and he flopped in critical spots. He couldn't find the throwing lanes he used to looking lost.

He's got very few options, really. He can sit and spin until the injury bug hits someone (and it will for many teams at qb). Starter? Maybe the Steelers give him a shot at starting with that qb room.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 04, 2024, 07:19:48 PMAssume you're the Bears GM. For this exercise, it's already decided that you're moving Fields, it's already decided that you're going to take a QB with the first pick overall, and trading down is not an option in this exercise.

Which QB are you picking?

Dave,

I would try to trade down and get more picks. That said, if the Coms were willing to trade picks, I'd do it and draft JD, a better franchise option  in totality, talent and temperament.

I don't trust Caleb to handle pressure and expectations. I much prefer Daniels  in that regard. JD is my favorite guy in the draft and has big game pressure chops. Caleb is like having the circus come to town with his stage father in tow.

Quote from: katkavage on March 04, 2024, 10:41:09 AMUnless they trade back I would be shocked at a tackle at 6. Free agency is what they are targeting I feel for offensive line help.

I'd be surprised if they don't restock the line in FA. That is priority one. I mentioned Alt as an option; If they keep the 6th pick, I hope it's Nabers or Odunze, both big-time playmakers
#233
Evans wanted no part of our heroes. Can you blame him? But he's probably an example of what their looking for (Odunze?) at the position. I thought KC would push for him, but they have a lot to sort out cap wise.
#234
The more I read about, the less I want that 6th pick. This JJ frenzy of speculation makes me believe there's a chance we could trade down with suitors for him.

We need foundation pieces almost everywhere and taking McCarthy at 6th (insulating the brass) doesn't escalate the roster enough. Much rather get a big haul from the Raiders or Vikings etc.

Taking Nabers or Odunze or Alt at 6 makes sense if we don't get a trade down.

I have little confidence Neal can even stay on the field, much less serving well at guard. He's a complete bust at tackle that we can hope be salvaged. Ugh. Worth a shot, I suppose.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 02, 2024, 01:07:56 PMIf they get measured in the pro day AND run the 40 again this won't bother me. I won't love it if they run the 40 at the combine, don't weigh in, and then weigh in at the pro day but skip the speed drills. That would look like they're gaming the system.

With all of the above said, if we could somehow get Daniels I'd be ecstatic. I think he's the real deal and has a very solid chance of being a franchise-changing pick. I don't think he escapes the top two, personally.

Dave,

I was amazed by JD watching him last year. His speed with scrambles, elusiveness and home run ball talent was a highlight show every week. And he had to overcome adversity a lot with that toothless Tigers D to his credit.

I agree that he'll be long gone before our pick 6. Not worried either about his measurables (or Nabers) but it's obvious his frame is a concern, but hardly a red flag.

:notworthy:  If they don't run and waltz through their pro day, that's a problem.
#237
Daniels has a NBA frame..that is probably the biggest concern-his durability. He uses his athleticism to great advantage, but you're going to get popped too

To become elite in the league, you have to outgrow your tendency to run at the position, deliver from the pocket over the middle and get up. And he's not a Josh Allen-type that can stand pounding currently. JD has to add to his frame, naturally.
#238
You have to think if they draft a qb early (at 6 or later)..you have to consider why and factor in the job security take with Daboll. If he feels running it back with DJ will get him fired, a new qb is a lifeline of sorts.

Quote from: londonblue on February 27, 2024, 04:22:48 PMMike G was clearly joking with the specific % but pushing his view that whatever they say the Giants are a serious player in the draft QB market. I do not see Schoen paying the prices being talked about in the media to trade up but maybe the price comes down. If not that leaves the options of taking QB4 at 6/a small trade back or taking a 'project' later in the draft. I guess the takeaway is a QB is 'probably' in play one way or another.

In play I would think, but not at 6. But job security also means taking one somewhere high. They'll (Daboll & Schoen) be considering staying course into that you'd believe.

Yup,

Saw that too. I agree JJ is not a top 10 pick. Kiper said the Giants picking him 6th.."is preposterous". Agree once more.

But DJ has not been a winning qb or shown proven winner potential (unless you make a Washington exception). He can beat them. Plus, factor in obvious durability issues make his faith in Jones seem wobbly.

If Kiper wasn't concerned about last year's horrible play, guess nothing will dissuade him about DJ. Qb is a major concern but I hope our heroes don't reach for the position. We need great players everywhere almost.
