Quote from: TDToomer on October 15, 2023, 09:05:47 PMDaboll seems afraid to let Taylor pass.

This is our O-line. I'd be afraid to let anyone drop back right now.

He's getting met in the backfield on every play. Where is he supposed to go?

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 13, 2023, 10:10:06 AMI have been hard on Laf but he looked objectively excellent last night. The goal was nice but he was making plays throughout the game. Great tone-setting night. If he and the other "kids" take big steps forward this year that's an absolute game changer for this team. Takes us from being good to potentially a lot better than just "good."

I really hope Laviolette lets this top 6 play out for a while. The only way this team is taking that next step is if Laf and Kakko take leaps forward so may as well lean on them.

Obviously just one game but you couldn't ask for a better start to the season. You can see that there seems to be more actual coaching going on with the shorter shifts and the defensive scheme, which is a nice change of pace from Gallant. The depth on this team is really good too.

Quote from: uconnjack8 on October 09, 2023, 08:38:21 AMI thought the contract was a signal of some optimism with caution by Daboll and Schoen.  So, yes, I thought those guys had at least some level of confidence that they could take Jones to the next level (that level being above average, not great, or elite or top 10 in the league) and with that the team could compete.

I viewed it as them taking a chance they could make him better after playing themselves out of drafting a top QB this year. You can certainly make the case that they would have been better off going with a much cheaper bridge QB for this year and not lost much (i.e. Mayfield or Winston), but the contract also gave them an easy out after 2024 if they needed it. It's just gonna hurt a bit if he's a $47M cap hit as a backup QB next year.

Quote from: Messiah717 on October 08, 2023, 04:31:50 PMI do believe Daboll will be back but I don't like what I've seen here.  There's regression and then there's this.

It's not regression as much as it is that this team, especially offensively, is very limited in what it can do. At full strength, they have a weak O-line. Without Thomas and JMS it's downright horrendous and limits what your offense can do. It's very difficult to build an offense when the defense knows your line can't hold up and you can't really take many deep shots. They drafted Jalin Hyatt to add an additional element to the offense, but it doesn't matter if the QB doesn't have time to take advantage of that skill.

It's just a bad situation and Daboll deserves an opportunity with a better roster.

This team really needs to start from scratch. How many players on this team will actually be here the next time the Giants are a true contender? I can't overstate how much last year probably set us back about a year or two. That needed to be a 4-5 win team with a top 5-6 pick.

If Schoen and Daboll were being honest, I don't think either of them truly believed in Jones as the answer, but last year made moving on from him difficult from an optics standpoint.

Quote from: TDToomer on October 08, 2023, 06:19:55 PMMy point is that blaming the schedule is excuses when we have equally crappy team left to face.

But what does what we have left have anything to do with what we've already played? We have a bottom tier roster and are getting beaten by teams that have far more talent than us. It shouldn't surprise anyone when these games aren't that close. Realistically, we struggled to beat even the mediocre teams at times last year and got dominated by the better teams. What's happening here shouldn't be a massive surprise.

Bad O-line, no #1 receiver, his best offensive weapon has been out for the last 3 games and his QB has serious limitations in reading the field. You can only run a smoke and mirrors offense for so long before the league catches up with you.

That first one is so alarming. Slayton doesn't have a defender within 5 yards of him. How are you not pulling the trigger there? Here's a video of it in case anyone wants to see it in real time:

Quote from: B1GBLUE on October 03, 2023, 11:44:21 AMFair enough regarding last night. the fumble.. thats on the line. every qb gets sack/fumbled from time to time. the fact he only fumbled once (i think) last night is incredible. yeah he needs to be a little smarter but that happens ALL the time in this league, to every qb. the int was pretty bad.

Yeah, I can't blame Jones for the fumble. The Giants ended up running another naked bootleg into a free rusher. Whether that's on a lineman missing their assignment or Jones not recognizing the blitzer, I don't know, but that issue got compounded by the left side of the line being caved in. Jones was rolling out and looking downfield for a receiver, the rusher caught him from behind and knocked the ball out. It happens.

I said "Other". For starters, and I'm a broken record on this, winning 9 games last year kind of screwed up everything. That was a 4-5 win roster that ran an offense of smoke and mirrors and ran into some dumb luck with a weak early schedule. I think if you asked Schoen and Daboll to be honest with you before last season, they would have told you that they'd have expected to be moving on from Daniel Jones after it, but winning 9 games and then a playoff game created a weird situation. They didn't HAVE to resign him, but how do you move on from your starting QB after winning a playoff game on the road?

This was always at least a 3 year rebuild that probably required a new QB. I still have faith in this regime to right the ship but it will take time.

Outside of his legs, he's nothing special. Will never be a guy who elevates a team with his arm because he doesn't read the field well and never makes anticipatory throws. The pick six today that should have been a TD to Waller is a prime example. I see highlights all the time of QBs making throws into tight windows, on the boundaries or into the corners of the end zone (look at Geno's pass to Metcalf today as a prime example). You never see those difference making throws from Jones.

I trust him to sometimes make plays out of nothing his legs, but I rarely expect him to add anything above and beyond with his mind and arm.
