Quote from: Philosophers on November 27, 2023, 12:53:45 PMYeah so 62 sacks have been on the QBs?  I have seen most of the sacks this season and it has generally been a Giants offensive lineman getting beaten early or just an early wholesale collapse of the pocket.  In both cases, the QB did not even have time to plant his back foot to step into a throw.

Have there been some coverage sacks?  Yes, but I'd say 10% - 15% only of the 62 total.  For those sacks the QB needed to do more.

I am talking about 6 yesterday.  There was the breakdown I think by Baldinger on the Seattle game.  Jones was sacked 10 times and 3 or 4 were on the OLine.  Not saying 3 or 4 is good, but not as terrible as 10.

Quote from: Dgoodmantrublu on November 27, 2023, 12:48:13 PMGenerally agree, except at corner. I feel like that is a position guys reach free agency more than at other spots. Though some good WRs are traded, so that is similar to free agency. OG is typically one of the best spots to find free agent success. So I'd look there. I'd also look at DT.

WR is tricky in free agency.  When you sign a FA expecting them to be your #2 or 3 you can do well.  Sometimes it is just a better fit.  The problem becomes when a guy has a huge year as the #2 and a team signs him with the expectation of being a 1.  I think of the trio we had of Nicks-Cruz-Manningham.  Together, scary as hell.  When you had them all on the field, very hard to cover all of them.  However, put one on a team where they have to be the top-dog, not sure they would have been successful without being part of a 3-headed monster attack.

DeVito is thrilled to play. Jones is beat down and probably knows how bad he is.
DeVito is definitely playing with house money.  He knows it, his family knows it.  Good for him.  I do love his enthusiasm and how much fun the kid is having.  Doesn't change my opinion on his ability.

Quote from: Dgoodmantrublu on November 27, 2023, 12:27:03 PMBobby Okereke was a free agent. He's our best linebacker in years. He's a complete stud. Campbell was a stop gap. He was here until a rookie developed and as a hedge against Wan'Dale's recovery.

Our best LB in years?  Not exactly top-notch competition by which he is being compared.  But again, he has done very little against the better teams.  Having a pick against a QB who would not start on our team does not make a season.  Not saying I have been disappointed with Okereke overall, but I did expect more.

Quote from: Philosophers on November 27, 2023, 09:50:37 AMWhy wouldn't they complain about the OL?  I think they're up to 62 sacks.  They're primarily the ones to blame.

They gave up friggin 6 sacks to the Patriots, the worst team in the league.  That's how bad the OL is.
I would have to watch the plays again, but feel like most of the sacks yesterday were on DeVito, not the OL.

The thing about free agency is you are going to be disappointed.  If the player was really worth the money they get, their original team would have already locked them up.  If you are just looking for an upgrade over Neal, that is one thing.  If you are expecting one to come in AND turn out to be worth the money being paid, that is a tall order.  Secondly, unless they are coming off a serious injury or are on the back-9, they are not going to come here on a 1-year deal.  Going to have to give the player 3-4 years and structure it so you can get out after 2.  That requires a decent amount of guaranteed money

I agree on the play-calling.  New England was able to move the ball a bit with runs up the gut.  Why they didnt do it more, I dont get and neither did Vilma.  The quick passes to trips with blocks set up were also effective.  Why the Giants tried running their regular offense with a QB who had no idea how to make the reads, I don't understand.

I would temper the idea the defense was fired up for DeVito.  Saying they knew he wouldn't give the game away is  a stretch, a big stretch.  They had 6 takeaways last week and still needed to make a stand in the last 2 minutes.  They had 3 interceptions all of which put the Giants inside the NE 40 yard line and could only muster 10 points.  Hard to even say the "won" the last 2 games.  More like they lost just a little bit less.

Quote from: LennG on November 27, 2023, 10:49:19 AMNot to hijack this thread but are we sure we are still playing on MNF?. Can they move a bad game for something else?
They could move it, but I feel like the deadline to do so has passed.  Not 100% certain on that.

edit:  No later than 12 days in advance.  so could still be moved.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 27, 2023, 08:15:20 AMThe man was rookie of the week last week and has the team on a two-game winning streak.  You might want to cut him some slack.
Yeah, HE has them on a 2-game winning streak.  Too funny.  They had 1 drive over 40 yards yesterday and all 10 points were scored on short fields.

I don't think it matters.  Both are terrible.  Only way they win another game is if the D wins the turnover battle by a good margin and sets the offense up with a short field enough times to squeak by.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 27, 2023, 09:26:13 AMI agree; plus, at this point, the Jersey Boy makes a good story of Tommy D is the only bright spot of a dismal season.

The last time the Giants had the local guy make good was Victor Cruz.
Are you really comparing the DeVito story to the Cruz story?

Patriots do not need to "tank" in order to lose games.

Quote from: BluesCruz on November 25, 2023, 10:26:20 AMif Bill Belichick was trying to sign him to his PS last summer, what does that tell you?
Tommy told him thanks but no thanks- He wanted to be a Giant
True the whole thing could blow up or DeVito could be sent back to the bench for TT

Im hoping we finish the season with DeVito and then we should have a decent sample size

Lets see if Belichek is able to slow Tommy down on Sunday- it will be a good test

then there are the Packers, Saints, Rams, Eagles twice.....  no pushovers

Are you serious with this?  DeVito is terrible.

Quote from: Philosophers on November 26, 2023, 01:17:29 PMAgree.  The O has hung out the D almost every game.  Dabs needs to look inside at his O rather than blame Wink for team's woes.
The D has gotten their ass kicked against every good team they have played except for Buffalo.
