Big Blue Huddle / 33rd Team 2022 redraft
June 20, 2024, 02:35:21 PM
round 1

5. NEW YORK GIANTS - KAYVON THIBODEAUX, EDGE, OREGON
Original Pick: Thibodeaux

The draft gets more interesting here, as the class lacked superstars after the first few picks. The New York Giants' need for a pass-rusher was clear, and Kayvon Thibodeaux is as good, if not better, than everyone outside of Hutchinson.

His athletic ceiling is still high as he turns 24 in December and is coming off an 11.5-sack year.

7. NEW YORK GIANTS - CHARLES CROSS, OT, MISSISSIPPI STATE
Original Pick: Evan Neal, OT, Alabama

Like Carolina, New York had the right idea but missed on the player. Evan Neal has dealt with injuries through two seasons, but his poor play in both seasons already has his outlook in jeopardy.

As tempting as Kyle Hamilton or a receiver would be, the right pick would've been Charles Cross, who has been average or better at left tackle in that same span for Seattle.

Kiefer Sutherland
@RealKiefer
With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.

Quote from: TheBeef on June 20, 2024, 10:56:50 AM1996. A 3rd year coach coming off a down year after making the playoffs in his first season. A 1st round qb from Duke still trying to make it. High Edge and WR picks (Strahan and Lewis) expected to break out (like Thibs, Wan'Dale and Hyatt). An unproven Oline.  Many parallels. Let's hope 2024 turns out better!

Interesting comparison.  I just looked at that team

I think this year's Giants have more offensive firepower, but that 1996 team was pretty stacked on defense

THEY don't suffer from fan-colored glasses. The final sentence of the presentation is worded truthfully.

I transcribed and footnoted it (eliminating unnecessary words) and highlighted the qualifying language he used to show that the prediction is not a prediction at all; in the final analysis, it's a statement that likely can be made about just about any team in the NFL almost every year:

"When you pair a defensive line that is going to be ABLE* to stop the run and get after the passer at a consistent rate with a secondary that has a TON OF POTENTIAL**, you're going to see A LOT OF SUCCESS***, and when you pair that with an offense that I think is going to be a top-half offense with all things considered, this team is going to be a sleeper contender IF PEOPLE DON'T START TAKING NOTICE****..."

* Being "able" and having potential are the same thing (see next note).
** A "ton of potential" is present on every team. It's how close you come to meeting your potential that determines success in the NFL.
*** Every team enjoys "a lot of success" every week, but each team also experiences a lot of failure. It's the team that has just a bit more timely success and a bit less crucial failure than their opponent that wins NFL games each week.
**** I contend that "if people don't start taking notice" is either completely meaningless or completely useless, since the purpose of the video was to "take notice" of the Giants' potential and possibilities (so the condition negating the whole sentence has already been met - lol.

Bob

From what I have witnessed over the years the teams that become contenders often see players who were just sort of okay, suddenly playing better.  Usually, a few stars (and a quality HC) kickstart things, but suddenly, you are seeing better from a good number of players.

As Bob said, most teams have potential.  Plus, I have heard many inciteful commentators talk about how most players' talent levels are very similar.

Quote from: PSUBeirut on June 20, 2024, 11:12:51 AMOne thing I know for certain is Barkley is more talented than Singletary.

I think rookie Barkley was.   These days, not so much.  Barkley went from being a pretty good receiving RB to one that constantly fights the ball instead of being a natural pass catcher.  The extra gear/speed that made Barkley special seems to have been robbed by serious injuries.  Barkley is still a good RB, but he is not the elite/special RB that was drafted 2nd overall.

Quote from: Ed Vette on June 20, 2024, 07:59:38 AMTheir decision will also be based on their faith in DJ remaining healthy or not. He still has to beat out the other Camp QB's.

Can the Giants raise his salary where another team may not want to poach him? Is there a team out there who would want him as their number two?

My answer is that I don't know, but my guess is no.

Teams are allowed to pay PS players more than minimum (any extra still counts against the cap)

Does Tommy Cutlets make the Giants' final 53?

Duggan doesn't think so

The bigger risk would be a team poaching DeVito as injuries mount at quarterback during the season. But the Giants could simply offer him a spot on their 53-man roster if they want to keep him when another team shows interest. DeVito has taken advantage of every off-field opportunity presented as a local hero, so bolting for another practice squad would be an unlikely business decision. And with the NFL's new practice squad elevation rules, which allows for unlimited game-day promotions for an emergency quarterback, the Giants can bump DeVito to the active roster as much as they desire.

Ed Valentine doesn't think so

I know. Tommy DeVito fans are screaming that 'Cutlets' needs to be rostered because of the risk of losing him to another team via waiver claim by trying to get him to the practice squad.

It is, though, worth the risk in my view.

First, I believe chances are good that DeVito, a local hero, would get through waivers to the practice squad. Second, the new NFL rule allowing teams to promote a practice squad quarterback to the game day roster as an emergency quarterback an unlimited number of times during the season makes keeping a third quarterback on the 53-man roster unnecessary.

DeVito to the practice squad saves a roster spot to use elsewhere. Besides, head coach Brian Daboll has kept only two quarterbacks in his first two seasons. I doubt that changes now.

Do you agree?

28. NEW YORK GIANTS

Devin Singletary looks to be the main back in New York after Saquon Barkley's offseason exit. He reunites with former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll after generating the fifth-best PFF wins above average figure last season (0.17).

Eric Gray is in line for RB2 duties, and rookie Tyrone Tracy is the ultimate wild card who could really boost this group, especially in the passing game.

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2024-nfl-running-back-unit-rankings-49ers-dolphins

What I found interesting is that PFF didn't even stand behind their own grading system.

Last year Singletary was ranked 25th with a 75.1 grade
Barkley was tied for 36th with a 70.2 grade

Yet the Eagles, anchored by Barkley, was ranked

9. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
While Saquon Barkley is a talented back, he has not been the same player he was as a rookie in 2018 when he took the league by storm. He rushed for more than 900 yards last season and stayed relatively healthy, which was a win in itself.

With Barkley now in Philly, paired with a better offensive line and a more diverse offense, we could see the best version of him since that rookie season. The Eagles also have the talented Kenneth Gainwell behind him.
