Quote from: MrGap92 on July 30, 2024, 10:33:08 AMI am not sure about their RT, but they did draft Jackson Powers-Johnson to be the RG. Considering Roten is 34, that move makes sense for them. I am not sure who Munford is so I can't speak on him.

MrG: Thanks. I know who Munford is. He's from Cincinnati and played for Ohio State. Their coaches thought it was a travesty that he lasted until the final round of the draft, and if he had not been drafted, the Browns were ready to pounce on him in free-agency. Bob

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on July 30, 2024, 10:35:17 AMThey drafted OL in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of this season, notably Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 2nd. Signed veteran Cody Whitehair to play backup G if something goes wrong with the rookie. Looks like they may be counting on a 2021 7th rounder (Thayer Munford) who played well in limited snaps to take over RT. Definitely rolling the dice with youth to save cap, as they made a splash signing of the DT Christian Wilkins.

H-T: I had no idea Munford was on the team (or anywhere). He was one my all-time "sleeper" picks after he lasted until the 7th round. I had since forgotten all about that (and him). Excited to see if he turns out to be a great value pick... this year should tell the tale.  Thank you!  Bob

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on July 30, 2024, 10:26:36 AMA number of those reps I don't even think are "pressures." Very few in which he was beat badly. The worst to my eye were 2 reps against 54 from the Lions, Alim McNeill... and apparently that guy had an 88 PFF rating last year.
H-T: Not sure exactly how they define "pressure" but at least two don't fit under any likely definition. Bob

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on July 30, 2024, 10:19:27 AMAnother thought: we literally just took the right-side Guard/Tackle combo from a highly ranked 2023 offensive unit. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, but that feels like a win at this point in the offseason and at (presumably) friendly contract numbers.

H-T: I don't follow the Raiders, but do you happen to know how it is possible (or makes sense?) for them to allow one side of their OL to leave?  Necessity to stay under the cap?  Both guys getting too old?  Already have their replacements?  Bob

Quote from: Philosophers on July 30, 2024, 10:15:35 AMThe Giants do not appear to be reserving Neal's RT position for his return and may very well be moving on as they replace a starting guard spot with a new signing so JE can permanently move to RT.

Phil: Hadn't occurred to me, but I believe you're correct. In a way... too bad.  In another way... good. Bob

Van Roten is what I call a "lighthouse" pass protector.  His head is constantly on a swivel.

Goes "on high alert" (for a stunt) when there's no one coming right at him immediately (at the snap).

IMO, his worst plays are a noticeable improvement over our guards' average level of play last season.

Quote from: Philosophers on July 30, 2024, 09:27:02 AMSo the question is what exactly is Kafka doing with the Giants now?  Forget titles.  What are his day to day responsibilities?

Head-coach-in-waiting?  lol

The release of Robinson was inevitable. I'm surprised he lasted until now. Bob

I'm glad coach Daboll is excited. It tells me he likes his personnel and knows this is a make-or-break year for more than just Daniel Jones... in other words, make-or-break might include him as well.

Usually, factors like that tend to increase the likelihood of over-performance.

If the "experts" are correct in saying the Giants have one of the NFL's lowest-ranked personnel groups, they will NEED to over-perform in order to make the playoffs this season.

Quote from: Ed Vette on July 29, 2024, 08:07:59 PMJMS is not nearly the disaster some of you are making him out to be. He left a lot to do be desired but he was a mixed bag and made some good plays too. He may have been one of the the best Center prospects since Richburg or that kid from Canada and I think he's an improvement over Billy Price. Feliciano was a solid veteran but this kid was a rookie. Give him some slack. He may become a good anchor. I like some of the things I saw LY.
Ed: Great points. And practicing against Dex may "sharpen" him but it can't be good for his confidence. lol

Give it three or four regular season games; by then, IMO, you'll start seeing articles about leadership and second-level effectiveness (which is what distinguishes him your average center).

I followed him very closely in college; so far, there is no reason to believe Giants got anything less than the top-flight player they believed he would become.

Yes, learning the speed of receivers (which changes from year to year) is one of the numerous obstacles for ANY pro quarterback to overcome at the start of a season. And it's even more difficult when you're coming off injury and have missed a lot of games during the prior season. BOb
