Quote from: MightyGiants on July 05, 2024, 03:02:43 PMYou also have to be realistic in terms of your team's ability to handle bad characters.  The Cowboys are masters at keeping questionable characters from having problems.

Or covering up the problems.  Cough . . . Michael Irvin stabbing . . .

Quote from: kingm56 on July 04, 2024, 11:06:34 PMHe didn't; his 17 game averages across 5 seasons have been remarkably similar.

Really?  I look at his year by year stats and none of them seem remotely similar.  His Y/A was 6.6 to 6.8, until 2023 when it dropped to 5.2.  AY/A went from 6.1 to 6.9 until it dropped to 4.2 in 2023.  His INT% was from 1.1 to 2.6 until it ballooned to 3.8 in 2023.  His QBR ranged from 47.5 to 62.9, until it dropped to,36.3 in 2023.  His sack% was 5.7% to 9.1% until it ballooned to 15.8%.  His PR ranged from 80.5 to 92.7 before it dropped to 70.5.

But instead of attributing the significant deterioration in all these categories to a combination of a tough beginning schedule, injuries on the o-line, and a powder puff camp that left the whole team unprepared to compete there is a narrative that somehow Daniel Jones just forgot how to play QB.

Quote from: MightyGiants on July 04, 2024, 08:16:35 AMIn fairness, @Philosophers is not wrong when he suggested most owners will share their views with their GM.  I don't think I would want a GM who couldn't handle the owner making suggestions.

Considering how outdated Mara's views on football are, I would prefer he not put his thumb on the scale by making suggests or sharing what he would do, but compared to other owners, Mara is not considered a meddler.

I'd also suggest that if Tim McDonnell wasn't a family member there's no way he'd be Director of Player Personnel.  There are different ways of meddling.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on July 04, 2024, 01:17:25 PMDaniel Jones 2023 ranks:

#30 in EPA/att (-0.24)
#30 in YPA (6.0)
#28 in pass success rate (38%)
#32 in TD rate (1.8%)
#33 in TD:INT ratio (2:4)
#31 in explosive pass rate (11%)

#3 in 2023 cash ($46,000,000)

Almost dead last in every metric but number 1 in our hearts and 8th in clutch I guess.

Just out of curiosity, what were those numbers for 2022?

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on July 03, 2024, 02:44:48 PMWe know they didn't like them enough to draft them 6th overall in the draft. We also know, or at least have highly convincing reason to believe, that the Giants were very interested in Maye and made a spirited attempt to move up to get him. So unless you choose to simply dismiss the validity of the second statement out of hand and call it pure fiction, you cannot rationally conclude the reason they didn't take McCarthy, Penix, or Nix is because they're so committed to Jones that they're not interested in any other QBs. They would not have been willing to pay the price to move up to get Maye if that were the case.

They weren't willing to pay the price to move up for Maye.  That's why he's not on the roster.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on July 03, 2024, 02:35:21 PMwith them knowing the cameras are there and having final say, I don't know that we'll really learn anything that we don't already somewhat know.

I learned something about why the Giants have a low ranked roster.  It was when the Director of Player Personnel expressed concern about the offense not having an identity if Saquon left.  I had the thought that WITH Saquon their offensive identity was being 30th in points scored.

Quote from: MightyGiants on July 03, 2024, 09:56:43 AMIt's been reported that the Giants had the final editing say (although it was only supposed to be for competitive reasons), and Daboll bragged about knowing how to game the system.

Still, the things I tend to look for are often unsaid or unnoticed.  I look at where people sit (this often exposes power dynamics), who speaks (in what order), what they say, who are in the various meetings, and so on.   For example, I thought it was interesting that there was a meeting of just Schoen, Brown, and
Tim McDonnell. That showed just where Mara's nephew is in terms of the power structure. In that meeting, I would have thought that Ryan Cowden, executive advisor to the general manager, would have been in a meeting of Schoen's top people.  I also thought that Mara and McDonnell parrotting Gettleman's old-school, "we have to run the ball" was telling.  I thought it was interesting to see former cap guru and Gettleman's assistant Kevin Abrahms speaking up about Barkley in football terms was interesting.  I had assumed they kept Abrahms around out of loyalty, and he was more or less just a figurehead.

The Director of Player Personnel of the team that is ranked as having one of the worst rosters in the league is a family member.  The Senior Player Personnel Executive of the team that is ranked as having one of the worst rosters in the league is a family member.  This is not a professional NFL franchise, it is a Mom and Pop operation.

Has McDonnell been talking to uncle Mara?  Is he Mara's pipeline into the front office?

He even looks like Mara.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on July 02, 2024, 10:15:03 PMI thought the first episode was good. Some comments/opinions/observations:

(1) I like Brandon Brown. I liked him plenty before this, but my view was reaffirmed in my eyes in getting a few glimpses of how he thinks and works in this episode. I fully expect him to get poached away for a GM job in the next couple of offseasons.

(2) I didn't love the scene with Mara and Schoen. I felt like Mara was indicating to Schoen he'd like to have Saquon back and had to be reminded that they paid Jones all this money and now need to spend money to protect him better. It almost felt like Schoen was reminding Mara of the contract Mara likely advocated giving Jones. Mara kind of seemed to just grunt when he said that. Felt a little bit "meddly" to me, albeit it was sort of subtle.

(3) I liked Chris Rosetti from what I saw in this episode. Struck me as very knowledgeable and informed on the finer points on veteran players, including their value and their fit into the Giants' schemes. I like the way he interacted with the larger group in the scene with the large meeting they had.

(4) Schoen drops a lot of F bombs! There was one scene where it was literally every third word practically.

(5) I still don't really have an opinion on Shane Bowen either way. I want to see the product before I really pass much of a judgment. It seems like they did their due diligence there and are excited about having him. I didn't get the sense that hire was rushed or that he was their fourth or fifth choice and they just needed to get someone. Sounds like getting back to a four man rush and stopping the run are priorities. That suits me fine as a fan if he and the players can pull that off, because that reminds me of top Giant defenses of the past.

I agree with all of this.  I'd have liked to hear more from the early days of Bowen, but they can only put so much in 40 minutes.  The little bit they talked about Simmons was interesting.

Looking forward to the next one.  So much so that I'll probably rewatch this one.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on July 02, 2024, 06:02:24 PMNo, absolutely not, and I only corrected him once, myself.

He made the initial claim, I replied with a question asking if that claim was in fact true, because I actually wasn't 100% sure at that point but it sounded wrong. He then maintained his position, so I fact-checked it and it turned out to be wrong. At that point I stated it was wrong. I didn't repeat that it was wrong 8-10 times, nor was it collectively repeated 8-10 times in this thread by other posters.

I appreciate the 8-10 claim was intentionally hyperbolic, but it's not even remotely close to being true.

Its not just about correcting one false claim.  FWIW, you've posted 13 times in this thread.  They may not have all been corrections.  But that number gives him the attention he craves and encourages him.  He is trolling.  If you want to jump in his boat have at it.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on July 02, 2024, 04:31:06 PMYup. I agree about repetitiveness. Circular conversations are tedious and add zero value. The same way posting the same posts about how nobody's opinions here matter or how making predictions of any kind is puerile and adds no value.

I agree with you.

I think the repetitiveness is the real point.  After all, how many times, and in how many threads does the 'TdV went 3-1' need to be corrected?  Does it take 8-10 posts?

And I don't really care if a few (and I disagree with @T200 's comment "In the BBH bar, no one is engaging him. Yet, here on the board, EVERYONE is responding to him." because it isn't every one, its actually a small group) choose to engage with him.  I'm not about to tell anyone what they should post.  But I will snark a little on his trollish behavior and comment on how engaging with his trollish behavior just encourages more of the same.

Also.the Jets line is as bad as ours
No no.excuses this year

While pff is not the be all and end all, they have theGiants' OL ranked 29th and the Jets OL ranked 5th for 2024.  Obviously they were more impressed with the Jets off-season moves than the Giants.

Quote29. NEW YORK GIANTS
The Giants' offensive line was among the NFL's worst in 2023, partially due to injuries. While they brought in a couple of new players in Jermaine Eluemunor and Jon Runyan to start at guard, they need their returners to improve drastically.

Center John Michael Schmitz Jr., a second-round pick in 2023, and right tackle Evan Neal, a top-10 pick in 2022, have been disappointing so far. Even left tackle Andrew Thomas staying healthy and getting back to his 2022 form wouldn't make up for poor performances from the other young players on the line in 2024.

Quote5. NEW YORK JETS
After performing as one of the worst units of the 2023 season, the Jets' offensive line mightily improved this offseason. Veteran tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses both finished among the 10 highest-graded offensive tackles in 2023 and could form one of the best duos in the league in 2024.

The Jets also get back one of the best young guards in the league, Alijah Vera-Tucker, who missed most of the 2023 season due to an injury.

Quote from: Painter on July 01, 2024, 02:24:54 PMGood question, Chris. As a matter of fact, the Romans never had a zero, or even a system of numbers as we would think of it today. In any case, they didn't use their "numerals" for arithmetic. They did their adding and subtracting with the use of an abacus.

I'm not sure when I first learned that, but certainly it was before my cognitive decline went into overdrive.

Cheers!

Some say zero was invented by the Mayans, others say it was Indian mathematicians.  And it was brought to the West by Fibonacci, he of the fascinating fibonacci sequence, 1 1 2 3 5 8 . . . where each number is the sum of the previous 2.
