My expectations are low.

I'm hoping he'll start drawing double coverage by mid-season.

Anything better than that is IMO very unlikely but would be a harbinger of awesome performances to come.

Most of you probably already listened to this one, but IMO it's worth listening to again if you have time (the veterans especially).

In addition what I wrote in the note immediately before this one...

Listen to various interviews with Wan'Dale... now listen to Allen Robinson II.

Does it sound like the same guy to you? Both have a coach's brain & appreciate what Daboll does.

Bob

PS. Nabers is no slouch in the mental department either.

Too bad the Bears re-upped him at the last minute in the year we wound up stuck with Golladay (ugh).

Allen will have trouble making this team, barring injuries, but would have been our top guy back then.

I've heard there's not much gas left in the tank.  Was a great Nittany Lion and a very good NFL WR.

PS. He talks like a coach. Just sayin....

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on July 27, 2024, 08:14:03 AMMy expectations for Banks this year are high. I don't expect perfection, but he was a guy who really showed talent natural ability last year despite making rookie mistakes. I expect a lot of that to be tightened up this year regardless of scheme.

DB: Not only that, but assuming they don't add a "last-minute" veteran CB, they need him to come up big regardless of expectations (which I agree with you about). Bob

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on July 27, 2024, 08:29:37 AMI hear you Rich, and I totally agree in principle. As I've said before I'm not a big believer in training camp performance having a great deal of predictive value of how one will look in the regular season that year.

That said, when Jones plays badly in the regular season the narrative from many is often that he wasn't protected. Since he can't be touched in camp, that narrative can't apply, and it's really just a matter of him being able to make throws that are on target and don't get picked. He doesn't have to worry about getting hit.

So while I agree three days of camp are pretty irrelevant (and if my understanding is accurate he was only bad in two of them), I'd feel better if he started to play little better than this when things are this easy for him.

You often hear people say "give any NFL QB time and he can pick any defense apart." Effectively, that is what he has been given in these types of camp situations. So I'd like to see something closer to the above from him than him throwing it all over the place and right into defenders' hands, which is what seems to be going on so far.

DB: I think it's fair to complain about a QB's lack of accuracy and other technical stuff in analyzing his play at practice, but when talking about anything that involves his interaction with other skill players, it's necessary to be careful to include the possibility that someone else made a mistake which caused the QB to look bad. Good idea for a thread, and two excellent examples.

Quote from: MightyGiants on July 27, 2024, 06:29:32 AMGuys,

Jones just had his first 3 days of 11 on 11 in nearly a year.  Do you think you might be jumping the gun a bit in terms of your reactions?  I appreciate Bobby and Justin are all over Daniel Jones.  I also appreciate that while training camp is fun to attend it's fun to get those first glimpses of the team.  It's still just that, a glimpse.

That said, when the throws count, DJ needs to hit that throw to WonDale.  There are only a handful of plays every game that make or break, and a wide-open WR deep is one of them.

Rich and @kartanoman: In addition to the issues you've raised, I want to say...

Although Skinner and Penik do a top-notch job analyzing line play (which is really all about technique in NFL) there are a lot more things to consider when watching skill players during practice.

Skill guys have a lot more to work on (that's why they get paid a lot more than linemen). So while observations of commentators are valid, legit and accurate, it's far less clear what the skill players are working on (or concentrating on) at practice and during preseason games, so IMO the observations should be heard/received in that context. Quote from: MightyGiants on July 27, 2024, 06:53:00 AMAs you pointed out, Banks is dealing with changes.   Plus, in camp, especially without pads, the receivers have a big advantage (especially since their QB can't be sacked).   I would until at least we see Banks in a couple of PS games before being concerned

Rich: Defense is not really my "thing" but I expect to see a lot of the Giants this season assigning Banks the opponent's best WR and playing some sort of hybrid zone defense. It won't take long to see if I'm right  because the very first game features a WR (and an offense) that Wink/Daboll handled very well, so we shall see how the new guy's approach differs from that, which, in turn, will tell us a lot about how much change Banks is going to have to learn to cope with. My point is... there are ways to use a guy like Banks without completely blowing up the defensive coordinator's preferred overall style of play. Bob

Rich: Yes, that's the ball-hawk I saw at Iowa.

Not being a pure DB, he didn't get a lot of opportunities to show off his ball skills.

He is staking his claim to a starting job and I think he'll get it. I'm far from an expert on defenses, but IMO it doesn't hurt to have Nubin on the same team. Both guys are super-versatile and be used together (even along with Simmons, all at the same time) and the over-all scheme still makes sense.

Rich: I've heard that theory before from a college coach or two.  I get it, but every man is different.

Some QB's want extra bulk and strength just to bolster their confidence.

If it makes Jones feel better about his chances out there, at this point in his career I say stick with it.

That being said, the stuff about Mahomes is true but it neither proves nor disproves what Jones is doing.

Mahomes' approach only works for him because (1) apparently, he has eyes in the back of his head; (2) he has enjoyed nothing but success in the NFL so if it ain't broke don't fix it; (3) his running "style" is completely different from Jones's; (4) the Chiefs have to my knowledge no designed running plays for him; and (5) the types of plays when he scrambles, and the type of scrambling he does, exposes him to far less danger than Jones encounters of his average scramble.

Quote from: Gmo11 on July 26, 2024, 11:33:32 AMTo be fair Peppers was pretty lousy with the Giants.  And the Browns for that matter.  Happy he found a system that can use him but I can't blame the Giants for letting him go.  McKinney's contract is too rich for their blood at this stage in the rebuild.  Love is the one I wish they could have found a way to keep but...such is life.

Gm: You and others complain a lot about the Giants. I almost never do, but I have a complaint now.

First, and I know I'm in the minority, but I never really liked Love (his run defense was IMO subpar).

Regardless, if Giants had no intention of signing McKinney and knew it when Love was ready to leave, they should have signed Love (who IMO was willing to take a bit less than his actual value).

Quote from: MightyGiants on July 26, 2024, 11:11:46 AMMaybe a confusion? The routes seem very close together
Still, Hyatt just misses hauling in a pass along the sidelines after having a step against Tre Hawkins III.

Rich: IMO it's always a "win" for the team when this occurs at practice. One of them ran the wrong route.

We've got enough problems with Daboll's complicated offense without having guys running wrong routes.

In this particular case we can be certain it won't happen to either of those two guys again, IMO.

DB: You're correct to raise this, IMO. Never take one of these lightly.

Some of these showing up this early are meaningless; others are harbingers of consistent problems.

I don't recall enough about his college career to make an educated guess; I'm just crossing my fingers.
